Well, everybody is complaining about Apple deleting or eliminating features. Well, here they retained the speaker holes (or at least the looks of it) so that people would not complain. Apple is trying so hard to please their unappreciative customers, and yet people still complain. :p
And retained the iP7 void speakerhole and retained the Air form factor - now throughout the MacBook line + the headphone jack illogic + lightning-to-none iPhone connection. Because :p

I wonder.

When Apple make their Electric Car, do you think they will put a nice big fat chrome exhaust pipe sticking out out the back to make it look cool ?

It seems that no-one here has actually read the linked teardown. There are 4 speakers in the laptop, the two larger bass speakers that use the bottom vents and two tweeters that fire through areas at the bottom of the speaker grilles that are fully cut through.

It would be more than a bit un-apple to have two small sections of grille at bottom edges of the keyboard which is why the grille follows their design aesthetic across the range and extends the full height of the keyboard albeit with the majority only partially drilled to prevent accidental liquid damage.

Check the (i) section where they talk about about the tweeters and through-holes in the speaker grilles - https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Touch+Bar+Teardown/73480#s148019

Guys....pictures have been shared a couple times already on here that seem to show the grid is not cosmetic and that the holes are drilled all the way through. Can we stop the circle jerk for 5 minutes?

The new 13-inch MacBook Pro with function keys and the new 13-inch MacBook Pro with with touch bar.

Two great products with two great, snappy names.

I want to buy one down the line but this is making it very hard for me..

What is so hard, no Apple Laptop in recent history has been easily user serviceable. despite that most last for years and years.. If you configure it to meet your needs, then it should last you for several years easy, if your concerned, get AppleCare, and if nothing happens in 3 years, chances are it will last until your ready to get a new one in 2020 or better..

but the holes are just halfway through the plate, so no air can go through!

Heat transfer dissipation is through the material medium. In short, the surface radiates temperature off slowly away from the unit. Convectional air transference moves across the plane of radiation and thus dissipates the heat way from the unit. They would have tested using FEA the benefits of drilling through the entire thickness of the case or to an acceptable depth; and from there the amount of heat dissipation differential between the two designs. Then they would have compared the factor of dust and other debris build up that would have accumulated into those holes and onto the interior components.

In short, this was their optimal solution without using a fan.

This is one of the most unjustifiable/compromised Macs in history. Sure what Apple has done would be alright on a MacBook or MacBook Plus, but not MacBook Pro.

You just hit on the big lie that apple is trying to sell us now. These absolutely are updated macbooks. For them to suggest hese have anything to do with their own 'pro' lineage is very cynical of them, and sad.

At what point do Apple's unquestionably brilliant engineers and designers TAKE A STAND and say enough of this crap is enough!

I wish they would ease off on the glue and solder. It can't exactly make it easy for them to manufacture / rework either .....

I would imagine glue and solder can be done by a largely automated production line. Plus it reduces the need to provide hundreds of spares for repairs and stops them being upgradeable which makes your customers update sooner.

I can see why Apple are doing it, and the sales are strong, so their customers clearly agree.

I like that few read the actual teardown. The lower section of the upper grills are used for the tweeters.

When they say the "grilles" are cosmetic do they mean the actual holes aren't real holes, or that the speakers aren't located directly under the grills? Because they could be for air circulation, or the entire MacBook Pro interior might be utilized as a port to improve low frequency response.

I can't stand Ivey and his deep sophisticated over the top design videos. Like dude its basic ****. Your using everyone else technology.

The only thing apple has to do is find a way to cram it inside an aluminum case.

Bunch of lads they are.

*heavy breathing*

Ya it's super basic. What do you do that is so impressive? Make designs for a multi billion dollar company?
