You can channel audio towards teh presumably fake grills, that is, the audio could be tweaked to make the best of their placement, shaping the sound to sound natural after being transferred through reflection to the grills.

With reserving judgement, the ends might justify the weird means. We could see and engineering feat here guys, after all, most of us aren't audio engineers with degrees in acoustics

the lower section is real and houses the tweeters

Guys, the iFixit teardown photos are clearly misleading. There are FOUR speakers... two downward firing woofers for low frequency sounds and two upward firing tweeters for high frequency sounds. The two tweeters ARE directly below the bottom part of the grill and DO fire through it. There are actual holes at the bottom of the grill. Only the upper portions of the grill are fake. Here are corrected images:

Thank you, in addition prior years ALSO had cosmetic sections. This is not new

So you first complained that all your data was lost if your SSD drive breaks, then you tell us that you have backups. So obviously your complaint was just to complain, and you _knew_ no data was lost.

And you don't need to wipe an SSD drive if it is encrypted. There's no way to get to the data on an encrypted SSD drive.

I wasn't speaking about my data I was talking in general. In general I think its a crap design feature not to be able to remove the SSD. It is a factor I think about when buying. All other tihngs being equal I would buy the optin with removable SSD.

And by the way - you may not know of a way to get data from an encrypted drive. But that does not mean nobdoy does. And it does not mean there might be a way found in 6 months time.

Cognitive dissonance much? Although it's wireless, it's quite difficult using it when you HAVE to charge it. As a matter of fact, if Apple really wanted to go wireless, they would've included wireless charging as well. Did they? No. So no it doesn't make sense at all.

Do you own one? I do. I can't imagine a more expedient solution than plugging in the same cable you're probably charging your iPhone with, overnight, ONCE A MONTH. Or in a pinch, for a FEW MINUTES to get you through the rest of the day.

Wireless charging? With what? You want it to come with its own wireless charging pad that you have to leave it on? How do you use the mouse while it's charging when you can't move it? How is that better or easier?

What bothers me is all the people who don't watch forums or read tech blogs and they buy this believing that there are speakers right under those grills.

Um, there are. The article is wrong. See quote below...

Soldering everything to the main board just seems like a recipe for disaster to me. How much are repairs going to cost in the future once you are not in Apple Care? The SSD and RAM are worth over £1500 alone. Let alone the cost of the actual logic board and processor.

And all because a touchID button dies?

Surely the more components that are on the main board leads to an increased risk of completely bricking your machine.

Apple tech - That'll be $1750 to repair sir...

Customer - But, I can buy a new computer for that much!

Apple tech - Well, yes, you can! In fact, I'd recommend this new 2019 MacBook Courage in Rose Gold! It's only $1999 with Applecare!

The $300 AppleCare plan is now an absolute must. That on top of an already $500 more expensive laptop is a hard pill to swallow. HP anyone? HP's Spectre line looks amazing. Then their ZBook line (while physically larger) is ultimately user configurable.

The 5-cell 49.2Wh battery is also attached with adhesive, making it particularly hard to remove when it comes to replacing.

These are obviously designed as disposable [albeit expensive] appliances.

What resale value when batteries with relatively short life spans are effectively non-replaceable?

Apple's business model may collapse when its customers decide they can no longer afford planned obsolescence.

I'm willing to bet these "speaker grills" are actually for heat venting purposes, so they made them appear to look like speaker grills instead of random holes on the side of the computer.. So I can understand it.

I wonder.

When Apple make their Electric Car, do you think they will put a nice big fat chrome exhaust pipe sticking out out the back to make it look cool ?

4, actually, that will actually be the specially tuned weather-proof speakers made by Bose for Apple. This will be partly due to the fact that by then, EVs will be legally required to make more noise, because stupid and lazy ppl are too stupid and lazy to watch where they're f'in walking...

That function key machine looks pretty good at this point ... except for the grilles.

Which part? The slower CPU and video or the price?

Quite apart from anything, a non-serviceable, non-upgradable laptop is a ticking ecological time bomb. OK so Apple use recyclable parts, but it still takes considerable energy to recycle them.

I, for one, am not paying a high price for a disposable laptop, which is what the MacBook Pro currently is.

I too have programmed with a stack of punch cards and I am quite glad I no longer have to worry about dropping them (for you youngins each card held one line of code). But you might also notice the world is based on statictics of failure and if Apple thought it was cheaper (for Apple, not the buyer) to be able to more easily fix these computers then they wouldn't glue parts in.

All devices are "ticking time bombs" and disposable, just like those old stacks of cards; it wasn't if one would drop them it was when.

When will the average 2016 MBP need to be repaired? Statistically a lot less than previous models.

That would be true if they had holes in them, but they don't.

Very strange, to my opinion the speaker grills do not make the MBP look any better or slicker.
also, i can imagine EDM machining those holes is kind of a pain, it requires a lot of time and money, why go through that hassle if that's completely useless?
(i suppose it's EDM, but it can be laser machining too, still it's a costly and slow operation)

you have repair statistics of a model that came out 2 days ago, you must come from the year 2021. tell me, how's the world then?

No worries and no need to be so bothered. Owners will listen to the excellent sound coming from their MBP and not give two trucks about the grill.

Any chance the grill works as an exit port for the added low end?
[doublepost=1479322323][/doublepost]This thing is turning into a giant iPhone. Total throw away device … just imagine the out-of-warranty repair cost.

Apple is sublime and pathetic sometimes. Good luck with such non-removable SSD. Not to mention if it is RAID 0 inside.

Let's get this straight...

  • Fake speakers.
  • Lack of USB-B
  • Lack of Thunderbolt
  • Lack of SD card slot
  • No upgradable hard drive
  • Difficult to open without breaking
  • Nearly impossible to repair
  • Impossible to upgrade

This is the machine Tim Cook wants to peddle as a "Pro" model after we've waited 1 1/2 years?

No thanks Tim. I'm taking my money elsewhere. I was going to buy a new MBP this year. Now I have to research other options.

I hate that you've made these things replaceable instead of repairable. I hate that you keep making laptops thinner instead of adding more functionality.

I just friggin' hate the whole company now. I don't even care if you succeed. You've already destroyed Apple to me. I hope the whole blimp crashes and burns and you die in the fire.
