I might be a special case, but in a situation where somebody has to edit videos and they don't put it off for a couple of days, the MBA is perfectly capable.

You started out by saying:

As somebody who has to deal with large files such as video recordings; 500 Gb really isn't enough.

I'm not the one saying it's not perfectly capable, you are!

You're the one that assumes that everybody uses their computer the same way you use yours. I'm just putting myself as an example that some users may require more space. It doesn't matter whether he wants to watch movies or edit footage.
You don't know him, you don't know me. So stop assumptions that 500 GB is enough for everybody.

My school requires the students to buy a Mac laptop when they first start middle school so I originally had one of those white MacBooks from 2007 and eventually that died, so I got the cheapest option, which was an MBA. Since I don't monetise, I really don't have an source of income. That makes the MBP a no go. As for external hard drives, those are a murder to edit on, if its not a Thunderbolt based drive.

Of course, you wouldn't go with USB. FireWire 800 is perfectly fine for video editing; even 400 is decent. I'm a hobbyist video editor, so I used to use those. I don't anymore since I have multiple internal hard drives on my new computer.

No one has made that assumption. It's not news that 500GB is not enough for everyone ranging from a single individual to Facebook.

If you or anyone else need more than 500GB of internal storage, then the Air will not be for you. So… Stop replying in the Macbook Air thread.

Stupid question, but can one get around that or is it too risky?

Nah, it's piss easy. Just pop the air into the microwave for a few minutes to soften up the solder, get yourself a pair of long nose pliers a ball peen hammer and 3 large toothpicks, and a piece of blue tac or chewing gum, I think there's a video on youtube. Oh yeah, most important do not do this upgrade without an anti static wristband.

As somebody who has to deal with large files such as video recordings; 500 Gb really isn't enough. So how about you sit down and shut up, cause you obviously don't know that people may have different needs. Not everybody uses their machine for Facebook or Word. As my girlfriend used to say: sod off.

If someone needs all of this, then the MBA is not the machine for them. MBP possibly? Or iMac if the mobility is not needed. He is right and you are not in this case. If you need 500GB+ get externals or the MBA is not for you.

Personally gonna be selling my MBP 13" 2009 and getting a MBA 11" with 8gb of ram and 256gb of space. Gonna be a sweet perfect machine.

Have exactly the same machine mid-2009 w/2GB RAM. Runs ML just fine but a bit slow on startup and a couple of spinning beachballs - did you find the 2->4Gb increase gave you better performance, or should I just also look at getting an Air? :)

tnx

Steve

Why do people assume that I got the MBA because I had to edit? It was something I had in middle school and thats all I got... I'm not gonna even try to reply to any of you guys now.

I wonder if the 802.11ac card will be a direct swap into the 2012 MBAs? Comparing the two images, it looks like the slots are the same, but the orientation of the card differs a bit. The antennas might not reach the "ac" card if installed into a 2012...

I wonder if the 802.11ac cards could be installed into a RMBP. I doubt it tho

Seriously? Many people have different needs which is why apple provides different products. If you want a mobile edit station with space for terabytes of storage, don't expect it in an air. Apple won't and shouldn't do that, it's not what the air is for. If you can't afford the proper tool for your "job", don't bitch to us about how lame the air is.

As I suspected. Being budget conscious, there's a chance you purchased your 2007 MacBook between 2009 and 2011. That puts you roughly between 9th grade and a being a HS senior.

I graduated and am currently in year one. And O' wise one, I didn't bitch about how bad the Air is. if you've actually taken time to read the thread, I was defending the person that people were lampooning because simply he said that 500 Gb wasn't enough. I don't expect Apple to cater personally to everybody that buys one of their products.

All day to me is 24 hours but hey, 12 is still pretty darn good even though real world will most likely be 9+ hours.

"We work 24 hours a day, and if that isn't enough, we work through the night as well" :D

At some point, Apple reduced all their battery times (from 10 hours to 7 hours), because the time rating can only be for some profile how the average user is supposed to use the computer and their old profile was deemed to optimistic. So you will find people who can use these machines for 12 hours in the real world.

That said, "12 hours battery life" is as useful as claiming "my car can drive for eight hours on a full tank". It depends on what you do.

Actually he is right.
One thing is what you have and other is what you need to carry with you. I have TBs of information on external hard drives but that dosent meen that I need all this information with me every day. My movie collection is well over 3TB but i normally cary only 4 or 5 movies with me, the most recent downloads. 128GB is more than enough and 256 is perfect for more advanced users. And if I have to chose betwwen 256 super fast ssd in my notebook vs 2TB standard hdd guess what ill chose....

No thanks. I need something with hard drive capacity. Casual System would be fine, but I have a HUGE iTunes Library of just under 400 GB, mostly movies.

Let me have an Air with a large capacity HDD or SSD then we will talk :D

Yes, Apple should specially cater for one person who does't have the common sense to store their 400GB library on an external hard drive.

HDD into a MBA does not fit.

Why do you not store surplus files on a mini external? As you are wanting an Air, you clearly want portability? When travelling / working away, I carry an external with my older MB which still has surplus space with it's 1TB drive, if only to provide a back-up.

Are any of the parts in the new MacBook Air upgradable? Based on the pic it looks like you can open it right up.

No heatsink on the GPU? GPU is on die with the CPU, plus the PCH (Southbridge in old parlance) is on the same package. PCH wouldn't need much in the way of cooling.

Buy an external drive, connect it to an Airport router and you have a wireless NAS that is "good enough" for iTunes streaming. I have a lot of data too but i use some external drives and a network
So I can buy a airport extreme, connect it to an external harddrive via usb3 and it works, just like that ?
