Apple did a lot under the hood to the MacBook Airs. At the WWDC keynote it seemed like just a processor bump. This bodes well for the new rMBP's this fall.

No 1.3Gb/s 802.11ac wireless there.

Wireless card has only 2 antenna connectors so can't do 3x3:3 even if the chipset can. Will have a max of 866Mb/s connection speed.

Good to know about the smaller SSD not compatible with previous gens. But then you would never expect it to anyway...

Apple's never been fond of backward compatibility.

No thanks. I need something with hard drive capacity. Casual System would be fine, but I have a HUGE iTunes Library of just under 400 GB, mostly movies.

Let me have an Air with a large capacity HDD or SSD then we will talk :D

Than you shouldn't get yourself a Macbook Air, this is what Apple is trying to tell you!

Do you really need ALL of your movies with you at all times? The Macbook Air is built for portability. Why don't you put your media on an external HD and transfer a few movies over to the Macbook beforehand when you know you'll be watching?

Crazy to lug extra pounds for movies that you probably won't watch again.

I absolutely second that (see above). My problem was solved with iTunes Match/ iTunes in the Cloud. No need to carry all the stuff around all the time. Part is on my Air, anything else can be streamed.

Then get the AIr anyway, with an external spinning hard drive..

Why should you not put yourself off a good machine just because of an *over-sight*

ok,,,, so its an extra thing to carry, but we can all have cake and eat it too.

Actually you can 512 Gig for $300 on a BTO from Apple.

There's a 512GB SSD option but why not trim your library? I have a lot of movies but I store them on an external HDD because I don't need to travel with a year supply of movies.

i just bought the NEW macbook air today, its the cats gonads

heres my review:
Working off formerly a 13" macbook air mid 2011, I just bought this new 2013 model with the Haswell CPU and low power consumption infrastructure.

Off a full charge, I disconnected 3 hours 40 mins and had an external drive connected the entire time, restarted 4 times, and did NONSTOP heavy application installs (Office suite, Photoshop etc.), a total of 23 applications, and ran youtube vids in the background the entire time, and after all of that nonstop heavy loading, I had 76% on my battery, of which id have around 35% on my older Macbook Air.

Further still, the entire unit has run UTTERLY COOL during this EXTREMELY heavy loading, installing and heavy 1080P video graphics play. My other Macbook Air would be almost too hot to touch underneath near back under same conditions.

Even without 802ac (new Wifi connection thru the new Air), I notice roughly 25% faster throughput on likewise file downloads using my new Macbook Air than that of my older version airport extreme.

My Macbook Air has been without a question my most treasured gem of "go-to" Mac product hands down, I own all of them (2 Airs, Macbook Pro, MacMini etc),...I was skeptical when I shelled out $1099 today for the new Haswell Air and its presumed prognosticated "crazy long" battery life and improved speeds overall; but the hype isn't hype, its real and amazing. The mere NOTION that I can overload this Air with App installs, and have a 2.5" HD attached for nearly 4 hours, run 1080P Youtube vids,...and still be at 76% Batt life is just, well, its stunning.

Tested out the NEW dual (stereo) mic and it IS much nicer in record, additionally the camera/vid is much sharper and crisper than my other Mac Air. Considering the price point is lower on these new Airs than the older ones, I give the new Macbook Airs a "110%". Having repaired laptops (non mac) in the past, and owned at least 20X more laptops than most consumers, I don't lightly conclude this is the cornerstone workhorse for everything I dare consider doing, fast got faster, and battery life now is enough to make a crusty "hates everything" person like myself nearly cry with joy. Congrats Apple! Homerun on this lovely gem.

This new Macbook Air brings TRUE definition to "disconnected" and "portable" to those who want to do a LOT of work free of power socket! Genuine portable is finally here, ...no more staring at the battery % to rush to shut down!

Thanks for posting this, I currently have the 2011 13" MacBook Air and I was wondering how the 2013 MBA compares to it.

Of course, I'm not in the market for a new laptop just yet, but I'll likely be buying one in summer 2014.

You can get a 13" MBA with 512GB SSD for about $1,600. More than enough for your iTunes library and still about 100GB left for everything else.

EDIT: I see someone has already posted this 2 comments up.

My school requires the students to buy a Mac laptop when they first start middle school so I originally had one of those white MacBooks from 2007 and eventually that died, so I got the cheapest option, which was an MBA. Since I don't monetise, I really don't have an source of income. That makes the MBP a no go. As for external hard drives, those are a murder to edit on, if its not a Thunderbolt based drive.

Buy it, don't buy it, no one cares.

Movies and music is a perfect use for a WiFi NAS / Time Capsule somewhere in your home, just saying.

The idea behind those small-but-fast SSD's is that you only use them where you actually need the speed (the OS itself and its apps). For data storage where you don't need super bandwidth (you can easily stream HD over WiFi), you can put the storage elsewhere.

There's another advantage here, of course: shared storage even when your computer is turned off. And that includes sharing over the web, if you so wish.

So I'd rather spend $300 on some 2 TB WiFi storage and even save money than go for a 512 GB SSD for music and movies.

All day to me is 24 hours
When i purchased my IBM s30 in 2001, the dealer offered an optional "full-day battery" which equaled 8 hours = normal workday (which btw. was outstanding for a laptop back then).

but hey, 12 is still pretty darn good even though real world will most likely be 9+ hours.
Apple has a good reputation for its pretty realistic runtime estimations.

Not that there is anything wrong with my mid '11 13" Air, but dang, I really want to upgrade to the new one. Between the reduced cost and outstanding battery life - which even if Apple is off by a couple of hours, it will still be fantastic.

This new Air may actually make me switch back to carrying my laptop when traveling, as opposed to the iPad I have been using. Or better yet, I'll bring both so I can get some real work done on the Air, not worrying about battery life, while using the iPad for demo purposes.

Hi:

I would like to know if this is affecting to new Haswell MacBook Air

http://us.hardware.info/news/34321/i...ntel-statement

I apologize for the crossposting

JP

You have one year warranty, three years with AppleCare. In the UK, two years if the problem was present when you purchased the device. So ask yourself: If there are bugs with Haswell chips, would Apple know about them or not? If Apple knew about them and they would affect customers, would Apple ship a product when they _know_ they have to fix it?

It was for when I moved to a dorm and no one wanted to lug my DVD collection. At that time, iTunes Match wasn't even thought of, let alone iTunes Match for movies.

Now of course, I'm fine. A laptop with a 1 TB hard drive, and I'm saving up for an rMBP. But I would love if the Air could have larger capacity drives :)

400 GB is the whole Library. Music. Movies. iOS Apps. Audiobooks. iBooks.

I use home network storage like a time capsule share folder. Disadvantage is you can't take it with you offline, but I'd rather have an air :)

There is a 512GB version.

All though I agree with others that it seems a bit odd to carry 400GB of movies around in an Air.

It seems odd to me to find it odd to want to carry around a decent sized media library. It seems even odder to think it's a good idea to store media content for consumption on fast expensive SSD's when HDD's will do the job just as well.

My cMBP has an SSD, a 1 TB HD, 16 gig of ram (all self-installed), and is far more portable and convenient than making it smaller at the expense of carrying extra hardware (HDD, ethernet dongle).

I love the cMBP and would buy another in a heartbeat when it's time to replace it. But if my choice were limited to an air or retinabook, I'd go for a cheap ugly PC laptop. Soldered ram and no 2.5" sata bay are both dealbreakers for me. An extra .25 inch is a non-issue.

If they made a MBA with a matte screen I'd be all over one in a second. WHY DO YOU SPITE ME APPLE!?!?

I thought like you until I got the air. I never got a laptop or monitor that wasn't matte. I assure you the reflections are WAY lower on the air. I have never had a reflection problem.

I think the new imacs use a similar thing: only one pane of glass... or maybe its no air gap between them I dunno. Whatever the case is the high gloss and reflectivity is not present in the airs.

It's great to hear battery life like this, but does that mean we don't actually know how long the battery life will be with Mavericks installed? I'd be interested to see how much impact the energy improvements in OS X will have, plus being able to see how much power an app wastes ought to make it a lot easier for a user to manage their system.

Very nice upgrade. Any bets that the retina screen will be a mid model update?
There's a part of me that says these will never be retina. Don't know why Apple would want them to cannibalize the higher priced MBP13. Unless of course the MBP13 is slated to one day die.

I will never comprehend this type of behavior.

You dont need a macbook air then.
