Helpful info

Hi - I got stiffed too: £700+ for a virtual macbook. However, I work in the same industry as PayPal so have some insider knowledge...

I have spoken with the man that runs the fraud team for PayPal and he tells me that they are aware of the claims against this website and the guy who set it up. In fact they have closed down a number of other accounts registered to WEB&NET / Mr Shuja. Althgouh he couldn't tell me much more, for legal reasons, it is safe to assume that PayPal are putting a case together for law enforcement to follow up, that should hopefully result in prosecution.

In PayPal's favour they are bound by banking rules (they are a registered bank in Luxembourg) and have to report fraud to the police when they process what could be the proceeds of crime (something called a Suspicous Activity Rpeort or SAR). Paypal will follow up and will try to recover funds, but it will take time.

However, if you paid by credit card (including crediting your PayPal account with a credit card) you are protected by the Consumer Credit Act (1974). All you have to do is ring your bank with the transaction details to hand, and state that you ordered goods that have not been delivered within the terms of the sale contract (*check the invoice it says 6-8 days). They will send you some forms to sign to legally declare that what you are saying is true: sign it and send it back with a copy of the invoice and your statement. It may take up to 45 days to get a refund, but they will eventually recredit you. Always use your credit card for buying stuff over £100 on the internet - you are protected. Trust me - I work in this area, so know what to do!

The news is not so good if you used a debit card, bank transfer or existing paypal funds to pay for it. You will have to wait for PayPal to recover what funds they can.

Hope that helps!

I hope the above person is correct

But the reply I got from Martin's money tips!

Try claim on section 75 of credit consumer act, but!

As always with these things there are a few things that escape the safety net. They fall into two main groups, and are both caused due to the indirect nature of the payment.

When you buy through third parties. Travel agents, paypal etc.
You’re unlikely to be covered when payments are made to a company that isn’t the one providing you with the good or service. This is because the credit card company must have a direct relationship for them to be equally liable.

The first main area is paying via an online processer such as PayPal, WorldPay or Google Checkout. Though these can have their own refund systems, they aren't as strong as the legal protection of Section 75.

The other is buying through a Travel Agent, where it is simply directing you to get a flight from an airline or package holiday from a Tour Operator. You should usually have ATOL protection for package holidays anyway (see Cheap Package Holidays) but flights don’t usually have protection elsewhere.

As you can see I doubt I like others will get any money back!

Its getting to the point where its not about the money for me, its about not letting someone get away with it and not letting them con any one else

Don't think so. WhoIs is a different setup and the products are different. Plus there's a phone number.
Still would be wary though, never heard of them. And definitely wouldn't use PayPal with them either way.

it was the fact that the paypal and credit card bit were just images like they were on the techhouseuk site..even the name is similar, and there is no record of them at companies house....

Im probably just being paranoid though, seeing the damned crooks everywhere :(

Trust me you will: ring your credit card company as I have done. Your bank then take the money back from PayPal because it is fraud. It is called a chargeback. And because it is fraud they have to refund you. I used to work in the part of the bank that does this stuff every day.

No no no, tekcomputers are 100% legit, in fact they are who I bought a HD4850 off after it never arrived from thetechhouse.

99% of the time I would've paid by credit card, but I've been selling stuff on ebay recently so I had funds in my paypal account! Looks like I'm going to have to hope paypal are successful...

Good News/Hope for all

Phoned my bank yesterday, turns out they protect against fraud so gave them all the details and their fraud team are getting onto it, the guy was even nice enough to say that he'd try get it put back into my account in advance too!
Didn't even matter that I used my debit card either.
So if you haven't talked to your bank yet its definately worth doing, they didn't care it was through paypal and were very helpful.....for once!

Hope other people get their money back too.

Ali -
Which bank was that? Def going to have to give my bank another try. They told me it was all down to PayPal to sort out....!

Royal Bank of Scotland will direct you to your credit card company. I'm going through the claims process and getting somewhere with the credit card, not the bank. Try them! I'm with Visa...

this would have been what id been doing if id used a credit card rather than a royal bank of scotland debit card....

Some good news

I been following this form for few weeks now I felt victim myself in a mid of September £195 for a TFT screen. If you have HSBC credit card all you have to do call number on a back of your card and they will send you forms to fill add copy of your invoice and covering letter which I copied from this form. I can't believe that I received money so fast. Best luck to all of you getting your money back as well I'd like to add that it depends a lot which bank you are with, I been with NatWest and Barclays before but I wasn't satisfied with their service, seems it was good choice change into HSBC.

I have been reading this topic for a while now and I know what a lot of you are having to deal with - many years ago I got scammed out of an iPod mini on eBay.

However, the thing I do not understand is how so many people found this website so quickly when it was illegitimate. Surely you all have places where you buy goods like this which you know and trust (eBuyer, Dabs etc) so how did so many people get scammed?

Easy really, they were the cheapest supplier when you used the shop search feature on google. You would have to be a bit naive to think criminals dont know how to manipulate a search engine....

They made their prices just enough cheaper than the competition to attract your interest but not so cheap that youd think they were crims. Then there was the killer part of the deal...the postage costs were reaslistic, not like the £15 youd see on ebay, and of course you could use paypal and google checkout which lured many of us to a false sense of security..because we assumeed that buying through paypal gave you certain protection, which it clearly doesnt

I'm with HSBC (debit card) and made the charge back of £341. It was in my account within 2/3 days..was well pleased. But now my paypal account is in debit for that much and they are threatening me with "a collections agency" should my account stay in negative for more than 130 days.

So what now?
