You're obviously not in your 40's, remembering back to the days of the Casio calculator watch or the ubiquitous Swatch.
the kid is 17 talking about "when i was growing up" :)

But otherwise, yeah, no chance my teens are getting these. I don't see a justification for my own purchase of one, never mind one for them. And I see a whole host of problems with it:

1. Parents having to deal with yet more tech support
2. Rules and regulations regarding testing in class and what digital devices can be on your person
3. Damage (kids have little understanding of the laws of gravity or motion)
4. Desperately not wanting to dress like their parents

Then again there will always be that subset of McMansion-living, Range Rover-driving families that insist their kids need one of these to keep up with the Joneses.

you don't foresee yourself buying a watch for your kid therefore parents that do are mcmansion/joneses types?

Why does everyone presume that teenagers aren't capable of purchasing their own products? I'm 18 and employed full time, I purchase all of my Apple products with my own money. People tend to forget that 'teenagers' go right up to 19 year olds. Y'all should stop thinking of 13/14 year olds begging their parents for "teh new iPhonez."

Because most aren't. Most aren't buying high priced tech peripherals for their smartphone.

Don't sweat it, you're getting close to joining the "old" crowd. Just hang in there buddy. :p

What is the earned income tax credit maximum that most teen part-time workers will get for 2014? $469.

What is the price of an apple watch sport 42mm (shipped)? $423.

What month did Apple open preorders? April.

What month is "tax month"? April.

Moving on....

What "scratch-prone accessory" are you talking about? Anything that Samsung makes?

If you want to make nasty insinuations, then don't be a coward but say what you mean.

The Apple Watch. Though made of quality materials, it will still scratch and most teens are not going to be sufficiently careful with it.

Look at it as training for your full-blown midlife crisis. No worries, it's on it's way. :)

Damn. For my midlife crisis, I want a Porsche, not a damn watch!

Bit of a sweeping generalization. So now all teens are just idiots that can't have nice things?

Sure some of them are, but not all.

I've been putting a little money aside every month for a couple of years now for the Apple Watch, and pleased to be able to order a 42mm Sport with launch window delivery.

Take this bit of advice from someone who wasted a ton of money on pointless gadgets at your age (minidisk player, what was I thinking?) use that money you worked hard to save for better. For college to learn, for an investment to grow it, or for travel to gain experiences. Looking back, I would much rather have a week or two worth of memories from a road-trip across the country with my buddies than a gadget for a year or two.

I asked my daughters if kids in school were talking about the watch. Both laughed and said no one they know even knows what an Apple Watch is. They wouldn't know if it weren't for me.

Pointless? But now I can see the weather on my wrist :p

In all seriousness though, the vast majority of any income I get goes straight into my savings account for university. Unfortunately, with the level fees are these days, it will hardly make any difference.

Also, even if gadgets are kind of pointless, they're a bit of fun. I don't spend masses on them, but things like the Apple Watch seem quite useful - plus, I want to port some of the apps I've created to it. We're not going to live forever, so why not try and enjoy every bit of the journey, whether that's strapping bits of metal and glass to our wrists or journeying thousands of miles with your friends. I'll try to manage both!

I don't think the Apple Watch will ever be popular among teens. Do teens even wear accessories? When I was growing up, I don't remember anyone in high school wearing a watch, but smartphones also didn't exist yet when I was in high school, so who knows. But even then, the iphone and the apple watch are very different devices. It's one thing to have your parents buy you a iphone, but I don't think any parents would buy their teen a $350+ watch. And very few teens are going to be able to afford an Apple Watch.

You haven't been a mall lately, have you? Teens are wearing Beats like necklaces. Seriously, it's stupid to me, but it's the current trend. They buy expensive headphones to wear around their neck just to showcase how much they spent on them. They even own different colors to match different pairs of $200 shoes.

kids find out about these things from their parents.. they're always using mom&dad's ipad or iphone or laptop.. parents don't have iwatches yet so the kids don't know about them yet.. it's not like you turn on nickelodeon or open teenbeat* and see iwatch ads.

*just guessing.. i don't read teenbeat nor do i know if it's a real magazine : )

Wasn't it $200 or 33%? http://www.apple.com/pr/library/200...one-Price-at-399-for-this-Holiday-Season.html. Jaded you are.

Besides, the iPhone was crazy expensive compared to other handsets when released.

The Apple Watch Sport is about par when compared to watches with similar build quality.

Personally still not sold, but I am intrigued. Price for a watch of that quality is a non-issue.

Quite right! It was cut from $600 to $400 after a short while, but the iPhone 3G was priced at $200, a $400 price drop from the original list price, or 66%. Jaded? Definitely. But not incorrect either ;)

In the US the new iPhone 3G is priced at a stunning $199 for the 8GB model, and just $299 for the 16GB model.**

**Based on iPhone 3G (8GB) and first generation iPhone (8GB) purchases. Requires new two year AT&T rate plan, sold separately.

as in, you couldn't just go buy a 3G for $200.. you still paid more than that for the phone.. just on a monthly basis.

That watch might be the one thing that gets the girl(s). Savings might pay the bills, but it won't get you attention for the opposite (or same) sex.

Then it appears that they must have asked the wrong teenagers...

I accept everyone is different.

I do of course understand part of being a teenager for many "IS" being different, individual, creating your own image, not going with "The establishment" if you know what I mean but this.

All of those things would tend to lean you towards an Android phone.
Perhaps teens are different in the USA ?

Last thing I'd imagine any teen would want is the same thing mum and dad have and perhaps even gran and grandpa.

They'd want something more individual to them, they can change, mess with as they are the new generation.

Again, Locked down Apple does not feel like it really fits the bill here.

I'm sure some have both, it's just a sentiment I have heard a few times.

You forget that Apple know everything and they know it will sell.. I mean you heard Mr Cook say how much they are selling right? He also mentioned some time back that the 5c was the best thing around for the price! He knows his stuff and we know nothing!

heh, right.. teens want to be individuals

they want to fit in more than anybody else.. and barely possess the knowledge/experience to comprehend what it means to be an individual.

"oh, i'm goth.. i'm different.. you don't understand me" ..meanwhile buying clothes to define their individuality at mall stores.

what happened? people forget what it's like being a teenager? or have inaccurate/glorified/idealized memories of those times?

The only Apple product I'm looking forward to is the iPhone 7+ with less bezel on the top and bottom. All screen. Possible built in force touch instead of a home button and touch ID on the back.

Getting rid of the home button would allow a large screen in a smaller package. The home button is so 2007.

I agree, they wish to be like their circle of friends, at fit into that group.
I suppose the question is, do they want to have the same things they see their parents and grandparents using and owning, or want something different?

I will admit, even for me, at my age!
If/When I went fully over to Apple, which may happen at some point.
Even I shall admit to myself, at that point in time, I've given up, and just want something simple I don't have to think about.

I cannot shake that feeling for myself.

as in, you couldn't just go buy a 3G for $200.. you still paid more than that for the phone.. just on a monthly basis.

But you had to pay a monthly fee no matter what phone you got - Android, WinMo... basic flip phones. It's not like the iPhones had a monthly fee but the Sidekick was a 1-time transaction and than free phone/text/data for life.

And as long as we're splitting hairs, you still can't get the iPhone for $199. It's $199 + 7% sales tax + any fees added on by AT&T/Verizon/etc. And don't forget AppleCare(+)! I think the mere fact of "upgrading" costs me around $20 from AT&T, for the "privilege" of getting a $600 phone just $200.

Methinks you shall be waiting a while.

Apple is in love with bezels.
Everyone else is working hard to get rid of them, and make screens almost float in the air, Apple as always is years behind dragging it's feet.

I mean, Jesus, some LARGE SCREEN home TV's now have thinner bezels than even Apple's very latest small laptops!

I have always wanted a bezel free device, and to program in "Soft Bezels"

Moving the home button, yes, again great, but most here say that's stupid and dumb as Apple have not done it yet.

Getting rid of the home button would allow a large screen in a smaller package. The home button is so 2007.

Unfortunately, the er, "not computer types" need a simple way to get Home, and nothing is more simple than just one physical button on the front of the phone. I also don't agree with simplicity for the sake of simplicity, which is why I went with a Nexus this round.
