Teens probably can't afford the midrange Apple Watch; they might be able to buy Sport edition actually. Anyway, teens are not interested in what they can't afford.

How different are these numbers for other demographics? Not much I'd wager. Up a bit in the 18-35 hipster demo, but otherwise, yeah, I think this is on the mark.

Well, not a lot of teens have $350 laying around for a scratch-prone accessory.

What "scratch-prone accessory" are you talking about? Anything that Samsung makes?

If you want to make nasty insinuations, then don't be a coward but say what you mean.

I can't picture any scenario where a teen would pick s watch over a ps4 or Xbox one (same price as apple watch)

I can't imagine that my two 16 year old granddaughters would pick up a ps4 or xbox one over a nice and most importantly fashionable watch. And each of them can buy an Apple Watch with their own money.

I know a lot of families with teenagers and I can tell you that there's no way mom or dad is going to spring for a $350-$1,000 watch. A mobile phone on a contract is one thing, but that much dough for a watch. No way. The average teenager going to school and maybe working part time is not going to be able to come up with that kind of scratch.

And that's what my experience in the UK is totally different. First, you seem to be talking about parents who can't do maths. A $350 watch is a lot, lot cheaper than a "free" iPhone on a 24 month contract. Second, lots of parents here _do_ pay out. And third, once the teenager is 16, they most definitely can pay that money unless they are lazy bums.

Once the initial sales froth has gone I still don't believe the Apple Watch will be a runaway success. It's too expensive and there's no real killer app or reason to buy it other than to show off to your mates. It will probably sell well to keep fit fanatics and business types who need a lot of reminders through a busy day.

You may not like it, but that is plenty of reason for lots of iWatches sold.

Just curious, have you tried it on yet? IMO, it can actually stand on it's own just as a watch, everything else is gravy. The SS version is a nice piece of jewelry that I think will appeal to a lot of people.

I think there will be a market for high quality watch faces. Obviously they will be hard to find. You will very quickly be able to buy "10 totally ugly watch faces" for 99 cents, but eventually there will be "one watch face that is exactly what you were looking for and makes your watch look even better" for $19.99.

They have smartphones.

They don't have the money to pluck down on an Apple watch.

End of discussion

You are wrong, wrong, wrong. You are so wrong, you couldn't be wronger. Plenty of teenagers have plenty of cash. Maybe not in the third world country where you live; in the UK they have.

End of discussion.

Or perhaps the feeling I have heard a few times about Apple being the brand for Old People is spreading more or being enforced?

I'm not sure it's possible to draw any conclusions from such a vague demographic as Americans aged between 13 and 19. It makes about as much sense as all the other posts on here that espouse firmly held, stereotypical beliefs about what teenagers are like and dismiss anyone with direct experience and contrary views as 'outliers.'

There's a huge difference between someone who is only a year or two into high school and an adult old enough to vote and possibly working full time for their living. But, they can both be teenagers.

To me, Apple devices seem popular with all age groups, from young children up to old age pensioners. Most teenagers have little or no experience wearing watches so the concept will take a bit of getting used to.

What does one expect when you release a product outside of most teenager's price range which is dependent on another product (a new model iPhone) that's also outside of most teenager's price range??

Completey true, and also the reason why Apple's been desperately slapping the watch on celebrities wrists.

Makes sense - as a teen you can't afford just everything. If you need to decide, you will go for an iPhone and maybe an iPad.

"Desperately slapping the watch on celebrities' wrists"? More like celebrities are queueing up to be the first to be seen with an Apple Watch

Where did you hear that nonsense?

I don't think the Apple Watch will ever be popular among teens. Do teens even wear accessories? When I was growing up, I don't remember anyone in high school wearing a watch, but smartphones also didn't exist yet when I was in high school, so who knows. But even then, the iphone and the apple watch are very different devices. It's one thing to have your parents buy you a iphone, but I don't think any parents would buy their teen a $350+ watch. And very few teens are going to be able to afford an Apple Watch.

I'm 30 and have only recently starting wearing a watch. I don't think its an essential accessory for anyone that has a smart phone because you're so often able to just glance at that to check the time.

I tend to wear my watch in the workshop to avoid covering my phone in dust and dirt, but I have to try and remind myself to put it on, as apposed to some that would automatically reach for their watch in the morning.

The watch was never targeted at teens and this survey is unsurprising and pointless.

Really? Think you better go back and check your facts. Teens may not be Apple's primary focus, but they are most certainly a coveted target market.

From Piper Jaffray:
"We expect teens to be a good market for the Apple Watch given the popularity of the iPhone, but believe it will take time for influencers (celebrities) to make the watch popular among teens."

From Macrumors:
"Over the last couple of weeks, the Apple Watch has been popping up on the wrists of celebrities like Pharell Williams, Katy Perry, and Drake, as Apple attempts to boost its popularity ahead of the device's April 24 launch. Celebrity endorsements like these along with heavy marketing may lure teens towards the Apple Watch in the coming weeks."

Actually I read this in a few places over the past year.

Teens and youngsters the most tech savvy group as they grew up with this, all they have ever known.

They like to fiddle, and customize and play around a lot with their gadgets to really make them their own, and Android was winning them, as it allows them to do exactly what they want, the way they want.

The old Apple and iOS, being seen as the simple, dumbed down things for old people to use. To a teen that's 30+ :)

You may think I am making this up, but only passing on what I have read.

And if I'm honest it does make logical sense also.

Of course, everyone is different, but it sounds a realistic scenario.

Don't be so naive. Apple using celebrities as endorsers is a basic marketing tactic to engage and entice younger demos who will respond to the likes of Katy Perry to drive product positioning and demand.

A more appropriate question might be; why would a teen need an Apple Watch?

Surely a teen would actually have more uses for one than adult?
You can put all your classes and assignments on there so you can check your next classroom/homework with a flick of the wrist.

Teens also probably are more active than older people and will do more exercise with one and they tend to be more social so will make more use of the drawing/ heartbeat feature.
