I think there will be large crowds, similar to the original or 3G. Why don't you just get it shipped to you?! There have been so many threads like this of people concerned about lines, when it's so much simpler to pre-order for delivery.

anyone have any experience with the lines at the Westchester Mall Apple store in New York?

Part of me wants to wait in line for the experience. Speaking of which, this is nothing compared to the Nintendo Wii launch line... started at like 4-5 P.M. the previous day. Fun stuff; I'm glad I did it, but I probably won't do anything like it for a while unless I absolutely have to.

I'll probably pre-order through Apple.

I went to the Apple Store for the iPhone 3G on launch day. The Apple Store in Tampa, FL at International Plaza had an insane long line and I went 3 hours before the Store opened. By the time the store opened the line tripled. It was insane.

I bought the 3GS in Tampa, FL on launch day at AT&T, the line was big, but not nearly as my past experience.
I am guessing the line at the Apple Store wasn't nearly as big for the iPhone 3GS.

I know you guys can't predict the future :p, what kind of line should I expect for the iPhone 4 this year? I am thinking of going a little insane, and I am going to try to be one of the first 10 people in line.
What time do you think the line would start? I am thinking about going at "midnight." Do you think that is that to early or to late for my goal.

As a guess, do you think the lines will be as bad as it was for the iPhone 3G or the Original iPhone?

I was at the 3G launch at International Plaza and it wasn't that bad. I got there around 5am and was like 40th in line.

If you don't plan to pre-order, Apple store is the way to go. They will have enough to go around.

Okay question, if I pre-order. Is there a reason for me to wait in the line in the AM as most will be doing? Can I just swing thru in the afternoon or evening and pick it up? Everyone waiting in line, are these the individuals who haven't pre ordered?

If you pre-order, sit back and wait for FedEx. No reason to even hit up a store.

Screw lines, I'll be pre-odering on June 15th and have it arrive June 23rd-25th ... no lines and you get it just as fast as everyone else, minus the hectic stores and overhead stuff.

I know most on this board find waiting in line a joke, but I think it's kind of interesting.

I have the same question as ajohnson, I want to pre-order and pick it up at a store since I won't be going back home after the 24th until that Sunday (travel for work). I don't want to have my phone sitting there for 4 days. If I pre-order, I can just swing by the store at my lunch break and pick it up then take it on my trip, right? I'm guaranteed to get one so there's no reason to wait in any line at midnight the day before?

Apple store I went to last year had 2 lines:

1)If you reseved/preordered

2)Those who didn't preorder or reserve

Both moved very fast. From the time you got into the store to the time you walked out with your activated phone was about 30 minutes

If you reserve(basically they put a phone aside for you and you pay when you pick up) for pick up at an Apple store, you have to pick the phone up be a certain time

You'll still wait in line (assuming Apple does the same process they did last year). I am guessing lines we grow as the day wears on. Early in the day, you could get out within a half hour, but later in the it probably is much longer. plus the people who reserved have to pick up by a certain time. 2) No pre-order in reserve

I'll pre order but if decide not to I'll get up around 5 and then since the AT&T store is on the way to the apple store if I don't see a line I'll be there

Thanks for the response. I don't mind waiting in a line for a bit as long as I'm guaranteed to get one if I go around noon.

The only real advantage to going to the Apple Store to pick up instead of having it delivered would be if there is any problem with activating the new phone on your account, but, then again, Apple had some difficulty themselves in the last couple of roll-outs with activations on launch day.

No problem. From my exp, Apple store is the way to go. Very orderly process....plus free coffee and water.

I recall for the 3G launch i got the the ATT store at 2:30am - was first in line. (Buffalo, NY area) - next person didnt show up till 4am. By the time the store opened the line was about 200 people long.

Good point.

One thing to consider. I know most don't want to wait in line, but the sooner you get through the process the better. As the day wears on, At&T servers start to slow down the activation process

I work 9-5 (crazy, I know) so if I decide to accept O2's ridiculous tariffs, and pre-order through Apple, can I mosy on down to the store after work, and they'll have held my pre-order for me?

I assume so, but I'd like to clarify, since the iPhone in general is becoming more of a cash cow, and less of a fun experience. Genuinely wouldn't surprise me if they decided they'd start selling through them if you haven't shown within a half hour of opening.
