Part of me wants to wait in line for the experience. Speaking of which, this is nothing compared to the Nintendo Wii launch line... started at like 4-5 P.M. the previous day. Fun stuff; I'm glad I did it, but I probably won't do anything like it for a while unless I absolutely have to.

I'll probably pre-order through Apple.

was there 7 am the day before for the wii
my friend and i wer two 13 year olds first in line laughing at the adults getting there too late

Good point.

One thing to consider. I know most don't want to wait in line, but the sooner you get through the process the better. As the day wears on, At&T servers start to slow down the activation process

That's a great point, too. I didn't think of that.

As long as Fedex gets here early (though I'm in California so I'm 3 hours behind the East Coast iPhone 4 "early adopters"), I hope I can get my activation done before the servers start to overload. I don't know if I can beat the rush, though...being at a time zone disadvantage. :)

I remember when iTunes went down bright & early before people could even get their phones activated for the 3G launch. I was like the 3rd person in line and had to wait till I got home and iTunes was back up and running to activate my iPhone 3G.

Gosh...I remember that...I remember how the media was all over THAT little debacle.

A lot of people seem to be mixing up the two terms PRE-ORDER and RESERVE.

PRE-ORDER means you order iPhone and it is delivered to your home/work.

RESERVE means you register your details online for a pick-up on launch day at either Apple or AT&T store.

Please, get it right.

I think the lines will be longer than the 3GS cause it seems that most 3G users skipped the 3GS and now will upgrade. That's what I gather from reading around here.

Apple store I went to last year had 2 lines:

1)If you reseved/preordered

2)Those who didn't preorder or reserve

Both moved very fast. From the time you got into the store to the time you walked out with your activated phone was about 30 minutes

If you reserve(basically they put a phone aside for you and you pay when you pick up) for pick up at an Apple store, you have to pick the phone up be a certain time
I got there around 6:30-7:00 a.m. I thought the line was huge, considering I was outside at the back and there were people inside the mall too.

Never camped for anything apple but did camp for a Wii a few years back, my brother and I turned up at around 9pm the day before to find we were number 5 and 6 in the line, by day break the line was zig-zagged through the parking area and out to the main road. At around 7am staff from the store came out and handed out tickets, they said that they only had 50 to sell and they would be for the first 50 people in line. By 8am when the store was due to open people were arriving at the shop at regular time expecting to get one, at this point people in the line started to heckle the new arrivers with things like "lazy fkrs" or "If you loved your Kids you would have been here last night from 9pm!". After getting my Wii and going through the checkout area I was bombarded by a mass of people practically throwing money at me so they could secure them self a Wii. I resisted temptation and kept my Wii XD

Is an apple launch anything like this?

OMG...This just made me laugh out loud.

You gotta love it...(unless you're on the receiving end, of course.)

Bad day, much?

Aw.

These forums do, indeed, seem to make some people irritable.

With regard to the original question, I guess a point to be made is if you are on any time constraint on the 24th, and you have to have it that day, it's best to have it delivered as long as somebody will be home. Otherwise, there are just too many variables.

NOBODY knows what launch day is going to be like. The servers could go down...people could get to the front of the line and begin arguing for ages about the cost of their upgrade (if the rants on this forum are any indication, this WILL happen.)

Good point. I was inside at that point and probably didn't have a good feel for what was outside.

Good thing about Apple stores, usually plenty to go around.

I think the lines are going to be really long this time around. Seems a lot of users skipped the 3GS and now are ready for the Iphone 4.

That's what I did, I don't see a reason to upgrade my phone and iPod every year. Pre-order with delivery to my office, I can set it up in the afternoon while I'm at work.

Camping out for iPhone 4

The last two iPhone launches, I've arrived in line at about 5 in the morning and had to wait about 7 hours after the store opened to get my phone. This year I am planning on actually camping out for however long it takes to be at least in the top 5 people in the line. So I'm asking for any people's advice who have experience with doing this.

Describe what you do and what your setup was and stuff like that. Like whether you just sat in a chair with a blanket all night or maybe even had a tent out, ha. And what you did to keep busy.

THANKS!

OK... this is my first time getting an iPhone at launch, so please forgive me for saying this... 7 hours in line? I am REALLY hoping that won't happen where I will be going to - Washington Square in Tigard, OR. I just might have to pre-order from Apple and have it delivered instead of picking up since FedEx or UPS (whichever one will be used in my area) would probably get to me before I could get one at the retail store.

haha well that was for the 3g. i was like 100th in line so it took forever. it was about 3:00 before i got out of there and then the servers crashed and i had to wait 6 hours to activate my new iPhone

I've camped out for all the major games systems for about 30hrs each. Let me tell you if I could do it again it would! The experience is also as fun as buying the product. First make sur ehte store doesn't have a problem with you doing so. Next be prepared, I alway had a plan to take my food and drinks but if I had to use the rest room then a friend would come hold mynspot while I went. Usually if you get there early enough the first couple people can set the rules so to say and make an agreement about restroom breaks and what not. If you can don't have cash on you that just makes you a easy target. I can't think of anything else right now

Good advice. Not much to add. I might just add one thing - visit the psychiatrist before doing this, listen to what s/he has to say about such behavior.
