I guess my home button was a hardware issue because I even jailbroke my old phone and turned multitasking off and I was still getting the iPod controls on a single button push (when music was playing) and I also got my phone favorites sometimes on a single click as well.

It's both H

Actually here you go :

Recently I had been noticing at times that sometimes I would have to tap the home button twice for screen to wake up. I thought maybe I was imagining a click the first time so I didnt think of it much but it happened again today while i was paying attention.

I then googled and found this post :

Unresponsive home button taps. Like others have implied, this appears (to me) to be a hardware issue that I can reproduce. Looking at the home button like a clock face, if I take a fingernail and press at the 12:00 and 6:00 positions on the very edge of the button, I get failures more often than successes. Note that this is not true for the 9/3 o'clock positions, they appear to make contact.

Thanks for that tip. That helps me as well. I will be asking for a replacement but until then this is a decent solution.

Is it both Hardware and Software at the same time?

Given that everyone I've heard from on these forums who's had Apple replace their iPhone 4 has completely eliminated their home button problems, it seems extremely likely that this problem has a hardware component. Otherwise we'd see more recurring problems from people who've replaced the phone and then restored with the same software.

OTOH I can completely eliminate the home button problem, for a short period of time, by doing a hard reboot of my iphone. The problem disappears entirely for me, and then returns by the next day. Such behavior often points to a software problem.

It's very hard to imagine a true hardware problem with a simple switch that itself is exacerbated by a software problem, yet that seems to be what we have.

One other possibility is that the process of rebooting temporarily eliminates a hardware problem, (perhaps by clearing some capacitive charge, which builds up over time.) That COULD explain why rebooting temporarily clears the problem.

My wife's iPhone is exhibiting the home button issue. In her case, it almost seems like something is loose within the phone itself. IE she sometimes hits the home button but gets no reaction, whereas if she "thumps" the side of the phone (as if to dislodge some physical item between the home button and it's connector), it begins to behave. Could this be the culprit? Something physically breaking off inside the phone?

Made a genius appointment when I woke up this morning for my iPhone 4, went in and got it replaced within 5 minutes!

No more home button problems, it's nice and tight. Works 100% of the time now.

Added bonus it has a nice bright blue screen, not the yellowish tint I've been living with since Nov. - On a plus side this replacement is giving me a better 3G signal, my other one was only getting 1 bar and dropping calls.

I <3 Apple :p

p.s.

When making an appt. online when you can write in the notes let them know you have already restored on several mac's and reset as new and it did not help the issue. The genius did not even test my device, just walked in the back and got me a new one.

Home Button

this is my first ever post.
The issue seems to be much simpler.
Dust. I used air canister to blow the seemingly dust stuck under the "home Button" on the iPhone 4.
I held the button down and blew air around it and then released and did the same thing. then, i blew air from the connector opening and "guessed" where i should blow the air.

All seems to be working well now. this is relatively a very simple fix, but does not excuse the quality control from the Apple folks.

I hope this helps.

Not everyone. I replaced mine in October, and about a month later I began having the same problems. Of course, that doesn't indicate that it's not a hardware problem since (1) the home buttons on both phones could be faulty, and (2) how else can I explain the fact that my home button worked flawlessly for the first few weeks I had each phone? It does seem to indicate a home button gone bad.

I'm just not sure if I want to bother swapping it again. Has anybody else had this problem again after swapping?

Many of us tried this in the beginning. I've hit mine w/my 250V air compressor with no positive results.

Glad it worked for you though.

My wife just reported that our local Apple Store would not replace hers even though she has the home button issue. They couldn't replicate it in-store, and their diagnostics didn't turn up anything, so they refused to replace it.

Big let down.

EDIT: To clarify, big let down because we un-jailbroke her phone and lost a lot of configs to take the phone in - not big let down because apple "owes" us anything.

With iOS 4.3 GM installed, I have not experienced any problem with home button today so far. Touch wood. I will report later if it occurs.

I've had 1 press of home button bring up the multitasking bar quite regularly on 4.2, as well as single presses being ignored (both occurred maybe 5% of the time).

My home button issues also appear to have been fixed with 4.3GM.

Great now today my new replacement has a wobbly home button that makes noise! lol

Just my luck, called the apple store and they said ok bring it in well give you another one. This will be #4 - hahaha

Perhaps I should keep this one and just pass it onto the next guy in June, Hola iPhone 5!

Finally! Mines resolved.

But I had to devise the fix after returning with a new one from the Genius Bar.

On the way home the button acted up.

So I _very_carefully_ put it down on the table.

Picked up my Android powered HTC Inspire,

Presto no problem :)

Sanke1 and vocalcity, are your home button problems still resolved with 4.3GM? Would be interested to find out if the solution stuck.

I haven't really has the multitasking problem on a single click. But what I do get a lot of when I'm trying to wake up the phone, or exit an app on a single click nothing happens. I find myself re-pressing the home button. It's really annoying.

I had the home button issue prior to this week. Sometimes clicks would not register at all. I took my phone apart this week to convert it to white. The home button + it's container were literally filled with dust and particles. I would never have noticed from looking at it from the outside. After cleaning the area and re-"sticking" the home button, it works perfectly with a nice, solid click. It seems that iPhone 4 home buttons are not as dust-resistant as the old models were.

As of iOS 4.3 I cannot replicate the homescreen button problem. I think a fraction of people might have faulty buttons, but the majority of the issues was related to the OS hanging. The latter issue appears to be fixed with iOS 4.3.

For those who got a replacement iPhone to fix their home button problems, and said the problem did not exist with the replacement unit, is that still true after over a month?

Hi All,

I had this issue with my iPhone 4 back in January when I upgraded to 4.2.1. I believed this to be a hardware issue at the time, however, I got a replacement phone on 4.1, worked great until I took the plunge to upgrade again to 4.2.1. I noticed the issue again.

Now, I figured that it can't be the iOS because I know people with the same phone, same version with no issues. So I then thought what makes everyone iPhone's unique, and what could we be doing different to others. Apps.

If your really at the end of your tether with this issue, just as I was. DFU restore your phone to the latest firmware (4.3 to date) and do NOT sync any applications over, don't even let it start to sync them over. Sync over your music though if you wish.

Use your phone for a day or so and see if you get the issue still. It really seems to have worked for me, and I think the problem is surrounding apps that have not yet been updated to work with 4.0+ (so they haven't got any multitasking support what so ever)

Let me know how you get on!

For those who got a replacement iPhone to fix their home button problems, and said the problem did not exist with the replacement unit, is that still true after over a month?

For me it's been just about a month. Prior to getting the new phone, the home button was failing with the following characteristics:

1- Failed about 90% of the time when double clicking normally.
2- Worked 100% of the time when I remembered to double click the button at the 3 o'clock position
3- Worked 100% of the time immediately after a sync, and reverted to the failing behavior within a day or less.

(This condition, of sync temporarily hiding the failure, created a problem for me regarding my apple store appointments. I had several appointments set up to get the phone replaced. Right before each appointment, I'd sync, so that I'd have all my data saved for the new phone. Unfortunately the sync made my problem disappear, so I wouldn't have been able to replicate the problem at the store. Thus I'd cancel my appointment and wait for the problem to return. Finally I just synced and went in and explained the situation, and they replaced my phone without seeing the problem. They said that they'd seen the situation I described on other phones and took my word for it. I figured that if they wouldn't take my word for it, I'd go in without syncing next time, and show them the problem, so they could write down that they'd seen it fail. Then I'd go home and sync, and then go back to the store -- where they'd then have notes about its failure ---, and THEN get it replaced)

Since getting the new phone the home button has NEVER failed.

Glad I found this! I thought I was the only one experiencing it.

Now I have to unjailbreak my phone, put on 4.3 and go get my phone replaced. This was so annoying for me, I purchased MyOS from the cydia store to completely TURN OFF the multitasking feature.

I also set double tap home button, to take me home.

So now doesn't matter if I press the home button once or two times it goes back to the home screen.

It's a temporary annoying workaround.

I really hate to go get a new phone since I've jailbroken this one just the way I like it, and i've paid for cydia apps like Bite SMS and myOS.

Sigh...
