the home button was failing with the following characteristics:

1- Failed about 90% of the time when double clicking normally.
2- Worked 100% of the time when I remembered to double click the button at the 3 o'clock position

That's me exactly! 100%... I have the exact same behavior.

Being right handed I almost always use my right thumb for the home button and I experience all the problems mentioned here at times. If I use my left thumb it works much better. Just an observation.

I am having the exact same issue. I am getting fed up with it and want to get another phone. In Holland we don't have an Applestore. I actually bought the phone on Belgium. Is it possible to get the phone replaced at an applestore in the UK for instance?

I've just sent my iPhone off for repair on an unrelated issue and wondered if my Home button was on its way out. There's a replacement on its way so I'll be interested to see if my new phone has the same problem.

I had the same double click problem with my iPhone 4.
Had my iPhone replaced due to a stuck power button. This new iPhone's home button feels fantastic! Way better than my original.

Off-topic: Thinking about bringing it in again, noticed right away the screen was more "yellow" and darker than my original. Also the power button has this rattle..

Contrary to what I said a fair bit earlier, my home button problems started occurring again a few days after updating to 4.2.1.

Booked an appointment at the Apple store for today, told them the problem and I expected that because it wouldn't replicate the problem right there they'd just say they were unable to do anything.

Nope, guy turns round straight away, gets one of the black box models out of the drawer and I'm on my way with a new phone within 3 minutes. Glad to know that its a problem they acknowledge.

Now just to wait a week or so see if the problem comes back.

After I updated to 4.3.1, the problem has gone away "mostly". When I exit an application sometimes, I get the single-click bringing up multi-task bar, but this now occurs maybe once a week.

Of course, the problem mostly going away with update to 4.3.1 may be coincidental, but darn if I know...

Took it to the Genius Bar today. The guy suggested that it might be a software issue. He advised me to close the apps occasionally and power down the phone. If the problem continues, I could take it back and swap the phone with no questions asked.

Nope - it can't be. I've held the stance this is a software issue for quite a while because it is never consistent.

I've also noticed it's much, MUCH better since 4.3.1. Only cements my initial thoughts.

I have the same problem. It happens prob 10% of the time. Sometimes it takes 3 presses to go back to the home screen.

My issue got fixed by getting a new phone (and guess what... it had the same software on it... go figure).

I also took it home and restored to the backup that the previous phone made... so I was using the same software version AND the same backup, but somehow the new phone completely solved my home button issues all together.

Haven't had a problem since the new phone.

It's been much better for me since 4.3.1 as well.

Still having issues with my home button even after the latest update. Made an appointment with the genius bar this week. Hopefully the replacement will work better.

It's been 6 days since I restored the new replacement and not an glitch so far. So it does seem like to be a hardware issue.

Just had my iphone 4 replaced a few days ago because of faulty home button. They took a look at it and came back out with a brand new phone. :)

I only started having this problem when I updated to 4.3.1. Has anyone had this issue still under 4.3.2??

Mine seems to be doing it more since 4.3.2, not sure if that has any bearing.

Im not bothered enough to take it to Apple, Im due a free upgrade which Im keeping aside for the iPhone 5 in a few months.

Came home from the Apple Store today with a new (referbished) iPhone 4. The genius took at look at my iPhone for a minute and marked it as an electrical issue with my home button and gave me a new one. The new one works much better, been using it for about 6 hours now and no issues with the home button so far.

I had this ****** home button bug since 4.3.1, starting with the day of the update.
but now, doing a "set as new iphone" DFU reset. with a fresh 4.3.2, it´s gone since 4 days...

let´s see what the future will bring ;)

Mine does the same thing about 25% of the time - I'm hesitant to try and get a replacement over the fear of getting a phone with a worse issue :(

day 5: still no problems...

wow.

after months of this dam thing, it seems like the bug is gone.

but i´m still a bit afraid every time I use the home button

Mine had the same problem and drove me mad until i made a genius appointment and they replaced my handset within minutes. would recommend trying for a new one.

i believe i know the cause of this. some people have mentioned it before.

i went to get my phone converted to white, and while the phone was taken apart, i saw a lot of dust at the bottom of the home button (when it was removed).

i asked the person who was converting the phone for me what is the effect of all these dust and he said the dust is the cause of the button going insensitive, and registering false clicks.

i had him clean up the area and i haven't had any issues with the button since. the home button flex (cable connecting the home button to the main board) was not changed during the conversion.

will have to continue to monitor this and update you guys.

I seem to be having the problem once again. There goes my claim of software as I haven't updated to 4.3.2.

Every time it becomes unresponsive, I press the home button down and blow air into the sides. Problem disappears for a while.
