... but the mind boggling part is that if it is software, how come it is not across the board? How come it is only to a few specific phones?

I think it is not the button nor the software but something else.. maybe some low performing memory chip or location services chip.

My "Reset All Settings" test didn't help much, although it does make the phone runs faster like a fresh install!

I am pretty sure it is more than a handful of phones. I have asked other people I know who have iPhone 4's if they have ever noticed what we have been discussing here and everyone has said yes. I think it is just that as it is so infrequent in general, most people just don't notice it or forget about it. It's just as anal forum users that pick up on it. :D

Also, as others have said on this thread as well as the long one over on Apple support discussion, people who have gotten their phone replaced ended up having the problem return with the "new" phone as well.

i get this too - thought it was a hardware issue, but obviously not. i mainly get it when bringing up the multi tasking dock

I bumped into the same issue. If anyone comes up with a solution please post. Going by this thread, I am too convinced that its software related.

I just upgraded to 4.2 and still have the single click opens the multiple task bar sometimes problem :(

same here, when I click home button it does multi-tasking instead, happens at least once or twice a day

Ok. I'm on iOS 4.2.1 and the issue with home button opening up multi task tray with one click still didn't go away.

Then I switched off 3G and Notification off but I keep cellular data on and I see a great improvements. I have tested this for 2 days and now have about 20 apps running in the background. I didn't get this as often anymore. There is a significant decrease in frequency. Am I dreaming? Can you guys try?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

As others here I too am starting to strongly suspect it's software, not hardware. Just about every single time this happens on my iPhone 4, it seems to be accompanied by some slight graphical stutter in the animation (for example, the transition from app to folder screen, or from folder to home screen) which suggests some memory or processor strain at the time of occurrence.

Same thing with mine. I definitely believe it's a software issue. Watch the next update handle it though.

Thats interesting ! But how is it to press the button? As in do u get a feeling that the button is hard to press ?

Even if it's a hardware issue it's not the button.

To prove, lock your screen then do single clicks. It will never open iPod controls. Then do double clicks it will always open iPod controls. No exception. Button is working perfectly ok.

Some sort of a memory problem causing this issue, I suspect.

Excellent point. I think you're spot on here.

It isn't a software problem, I took it the Genius Bar and they restored it there (To 4.1). They asked me to play around with the home button if it still felt the same and it did. They kindly replaced my iPhone 4

I never had this problem before 4.2.1 and now 1/5 times I need to press the home button twice to wake up the phone. Chances are it's software related.

It might be all in my head, but with 4.2, I agree with this statement. (While I had the issue before.)

It was all in my head...it still happens.:mad:

Mine started doing this after 4.1. Never noticed it before. Annoying, but I'm going to hold off on replacing it. Hopefully it is software issue that can be fixed. If I get my phone replaced, I'm sure I'll get a refurb that has more issues. I just have crap luck with stuff like that.

Mine has been doing the single click multitask bar thing lately but my wife's hasn't done it at all. Phones were bought on the same day. Both Running 4.2.1 and never had this prior to updating. Happens about 1/10 clicks for me.

Finally just took mine back and got a replacement. Got to where I would be in an app and it'd take up to 15 clicks of the Home button before it did anything. Thank the Lord I'm a forty minute ride away from an Apple store.

I have one 2 minutes up the street :D

Mine did this since July when I bought the phone, that's iOS 4.0, 4.0.1, 4.0.2, 4.1 and 4.2.1...

Took I to apple store on Friday and had it replaced, new handset hasn't done anything wrong yet.

Well, as I mentioned several pages back, I took my i4 back to Apple and was given a new one. This is was about 5 weeks ago. I had no problems with the new i4 until a few days ago. For the past few days, I've had the problem at least a couple of times each day.

<sigh>

Argh. Thanks for the update. This is why I have not brought mine back yet to exchange. I am just not convinced of it being a long term fix. Also, I have noticed whenever it seems to be getting worse, if I reboot the phone it takes care of the problem again for a while, or at least makes it more infrequent. Very strange that this seems to work, but it does.

Mine seems to be slowly getting worse.....at the start it would happen every other day...now it is up to a few times a day??????

:(
