I've just booked an appointment at the Glasgow store tomorrow.

My home button is doing the same things:

Failing to recognise double presses, thinking a single press is a super fast double press, or just plain not responding to being pressed unless you put some force behind it.

I can be browsing on Safari, press the home button, hear and feel the click, but the phone doesn't return to the home screen.

I've restored, same thing happens. See what they say at the Genius Bar eh?

I too had my iPhone 4 replaced and not had the problem since. The click of the home button when pressed feels different to the faulty one, which is something I noticed when comaring to my 3G. But then thought it was beacuse it was a different mode.

But obviously not

Same issue here. I thought it was a hardware issue, but it only started happening with my iPhone 4 after the last software update. Sometimes I'll press the home button and nothing will happen. It's very annoying. Hope Apple is able to fix it soon.

How was the Genius with you?

It's something that can't be replicated at will, but it does seem to be a common enough complaint.

Wow seems so many people have this. We all need to report to apple bug list so they can fix it. Or it needs to be put on main page. It needs to get fixed.

Gee..I think I have this issue as well. I just thought it was a small case of lag, and probably because my phones Jailbroken. Its only intermittent mind... Fortunately for me, my previous phone (storm2) had worse bugs so this home button issue is a minor... but still, a fix would be welcomed.

Another odd one tonight, done a double click while on the home screen which resulted in the Spotlight search page coming on screen rather than the multitasking bar opening. Took three attempts to get the multitasking bar to open.

Button feels fine, but something is not registering somewhere and I don't want a replacement phone for something like this.

I have notice over the last two weeks since updating my iPhone 4 to 4.2.1 that I also have the issue where if I single click the home button it activates the multitasking bar. It only happens once or twice a day and I'm a fairly heavy user. Think I'll wait for the next software update and see what happens.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

My only hope is that Apple by now is well aware of this issue and working on a fix. I still think it's a software problem at least based on my iPhone's behavior.

My iphone was doing the same thing. Sometimes a single press would double press and visa-versa. It was starting to bother me so I decided to get it replaced. Went to an Apple store and the genius played with the button a couple times and gave me a replacement phone.

The replacement phone is perfect and works great now. The only difference I noticed is that the home button has a solid click to it whereas my original iphone was firm but didn't click. I wonder if Apple changed something or if it's just a different batch of buttons. Anyways, totally happy with my phone now and I now know it was a hardware issue and not software.

Just went into the Glasgow Apple store and played about with every demo iPhone 4, and I could replicate the "issue" on each of them.

Seems very much like a software issue, unless my phone and another 12 demo units are faulty.

Well, just had my Genius appointment, and I was offered a replacement the second I told the girl what the home button was doing.

Main points she told me:

1. It is very common, especially since 4.2.

2. It does not affect all handsets.

3. Some handsets in store display this behaviour and Apple are aware of that.

4. Customers with the issue are being offered a replacement iPhone 4 as replacing just the home button is not an option.

5. There IS a chance the replacement could have the same issue.

This iPhone 4 I have now, which I am posting on as I travel home from work, is working flawlessly. Not a single glitch when using multitasking or the home button in general. My replacement is on 4.1, where it will remain for the foreseeable future.

Interestingly though, I was not asked to demonstrate the issue, it was only discussed. However, given how common she said the complaint was, a replacement was her suggestion (I didn't push nor hint at a replacement) as she acknowledges it hampers use of the phone as intended.

Hope this info helps.

I scheduled a Genius Bar appointment for Friday about this. Home button works intermittently. It sounds minor but it's really annoying. Hopefully I won't into resistance when I ask the phone to be swapped out for another one....

Thanks for the update. Point 1 suggests a software issue and yet point 2 somewhat reinforces the hardware-issue theory; wouldn't a software issue affect every handset? This is such a frustrating and confusing problem.

I'm tempted to get mine replaced but frankly my iPhone otherwise has been flawless (perfect screen, build and no antenna/proximity sensor issues whatsoever) that I feel I'm risking it if I replace it as the replacement may still get this same issue again (right away or down the road) and with my luck I'll probably end up with other issues too that I don't currently have.

I have the same thought as you do. I don't want to get a phone with more issues. And in my country, we don't have an Apple Store. I have to go to the telco center and I am not sure how open they are with replacement. What if they give me a refurb.

But what started as an inconvenience is now an annoyance and I think I will try my luck!

Typically, although only today, I've began noticing on my replacement what looks like scan lines or interlaced lines running horizontally across the screen that are niticanle on darker areas/icons when my focus shifts.

I used to have this problem with my previous iP4 (4.1). Sometime it would take 3-4 pushes to wake up, or exit an app. Also i'd get the single push multitask problem too.

But since recieving a new replacement iP4 (4.1) I have not had any problems what so ever. The home button is very responsive :)

Is it a software or hardware issue? Mine seems to be doing it recently too.

I have my phone jailbroken and unlocked. I might just look into getting the home button replaced through 3rd party. Don't want to lose jailbreak or unlock.

Argh, frustrated this happened to my phone. The home button does seem more recessed than most stock units but not any more than the 3gs.

I finally went to my telco (maxis is the name) to report the problem. The guy at maxis said that Apple is willing to do a 1-1 exchange and not a refurb but I have to wait 5 business days. I'll report back.

So, today I collected my iPhone. It came in black box and the serial starts with 5K. The iOS is 4.1. I think I got a refurb but everything looks ok to me. No scratches or anything. And the Home button (after 30 minutes of using) works fine. Let's see in a week's time.

The Home button in this one feels differently from the retail iPhone I had which has an issue. I am not sure if I am imagining it.

ok here's a weird one.

i have been encountering the "one click multitask bar" issue very frequently. i would say once every 3 or 4 clicks.

another problem i had was in the angry birds main screen, where the birds are flying across the screen. the screen will "pause" for a second and the birds will resume flying. after a few seconds the screen will pause again.

now, both these problems were GONE a few days ago. i have actually been monitoring the home button for 2 days now, not once did the multitask bar come up.

i have not made any changes, did not delete/add any apps, EXCEPT i updated facebook app to the latest version. i did a reset (both buttons) and both my problems were gone.

i know this sounds weird, but hey, it solved my problem. i dont know what caused it or resolved it, but the only thing i did was update the app.

Mine's still doing it. I did a restore but it didn't help. Frustrating but not enough for a trip to Apple store to replace. Here's hoping the next iPhone has a redesigned home button, maybe do away with the physical button altogether.
