Should be the standard everywhere. What I want next is TVPlay. Just plug in your phone and it becomes Apple TV. I hate having to log in and set up everything from scratch when I already have everything on my phone.

Eh, I guess. TVs are typically a family item, hence the Apple TV and multiple user profiles.

I don’t have any streaming apps on my phone. Why bother when the TV is so much better?

Yes. Pin to drive. Or don’t use phone key use the Tesla keycard if a Bluetooth relay attack is concerning to you at a theoretical level.

Edit I wonder if the Apple digital keycard will be use like tap to pay for teslas without uwb.
So the “fix” to a vulnerability is “just don’t use it”?

Best antivirus ever: Don’t use computers.

Just looked, the highland / 2024 refresh 3 gained UWB (along with juniper Y, cybertruck, and S/X after the 2021 refresh at one point). I've had several teslas, and once in a while the passive phone key wouldn't always work (very seldom an issue), but with a current Tesla that has UWB, its been 13 months since I've had it and have yet to see the phone key fail.

Also, I believe it's all the legacy S/X that don't have NFC right? All Model 3, Y, CT use NFC for the key card on the B pillar and in centre console.
We have a 2018 M3 and a 2024 M3. The 2024 uses the UWB and is far more reliable in the aspect that we never have an issue with it (doors always open no matter what).

The 2018's doors will sometimes not open when we walk up to it and require me to turn around and display my butt (I put my phone in my back pocket) for the car to open its door. Never had to wake up my phone or take it out of my pocket tho. So minus that it's been very consistent. I think it's known as the Butt Present or Butt Dance? lol

What sucks is that our cars are parked right under us so the UWB key prevents the phone from going to sleep and doesn't allow that flatlining of overnight battery that we used to have. So when we're home we often leave our phones plugged in. (While it's a low % of usage, it drains constantly).

Wonder if this will change anything?

<yawn> Still made by a turd.
I can accept that you don't like the CEO but this company employs a lot of Americans, builds a mostly Made in America vehicle that has done good things for the environment in terms of breathable air.

The features on this car are pretty amazing. We inherited FSD for free on our used 2018 and moved it (for free) to our 2024. FSD is absolutely amazing. I've used it to drive many thousands of miles (half way across USA too). Being able to remotely do stuff with my car at any point in time has been really nice - so nice we got another one (mid 2024 before things went interesting). FSD and Tesla's safety features have saved us from several very nasty wrecks that I would not have caught.

We really like our cars. Having read several books on Musk (the Walter Isaacson one too) - I don't believe he is a nice person and I can understand why people don't like him especially after late last year and this year.

Thats interesting. The 2024 with UWB also stays active with the phone in the room above? I noticed mine is very sensitive and flashes lights to unlock as I approach (within feet) but wasn't sure what proximity its looking for.

It's smart enough to know I'm not close enough to open the doors - I've tested this - leaving my phone in my room and going to the car - it won't let me unlock the doors. But the phone shows the UWB key using the phone's battery constantly even while we sleep. :p

Doesn't seem to impact car battery life at all (I've had many days where the car was parked under me and it didn't lose a percentage (slept for about a week)).

I don’t really care about CarPlay on Tesla but I would be excited for this. The UWB key on the newer models is basically flawless, but I’d rather it be subject to Apple’s battery optimization vs Tesla’s workaround that is likely less efficient. It also would be more convenient when it comes to watch use.

Would the Apple one be able to tell who is in what seat? The Tesla one can tell who is the driver and who is the passenger if both keys get in, and select the right profile.

This has to be a must. Our 2018 and our 2024 do a very good job of being able to figure out if my wife or I am driving without any input from us (depending on which side of the car we're on).

Sure hope this helps all of those model 3 customers trapped in their cars. What a joke of a company.

There. Got that out of the way for everyone.
There is a lever people can pull level on the door’s arm rest that opens the door manually. People are either dumb that they don’t know it’s there or don’t think right when they panic.

Tesla can improve it to make it idiot proof and panic proof as much as possible though.

It’s not a joke company. It has done good for our planet than any other company, country, or person has ever done in all of human history.

why on earth is Tesla, a presumably American car company, offering new functionality first in the Chinese market, before only later bringing it to the United States?
Well see: Apple Pay, invented in the US, used widely in Europe first.

Cell phones: Invented in the US, caught on en masse in Asia first.

Credit and debit cards: Invented in the US, upgraded and improved upon in Europe first.

That’s just how it be. We invent; and stagnate.

Although the phone app does an excellent job by just keeping it running in the background, it would be nice if it were to be able to open the car at the OS level. I don’t like to keep the app in the background sometimes.

Yes exactly. With most cars you have turn off the system settings that allow the key fob to function. If at a theoretical level a Bluetooth relay attack bothers you:
1. Put on pin to drive
2. Use the Tesla card instead of Bluetooth.

It’s only minimal convenience lost as your driver profile is still saved on the cloud. And the Tesla app still function properly.

At any rate how many teslas have been stolen using a relay attack with pin to drive enabled? I’ll wait patiently for an answer.

Elon Musk is even worse than Tim Cook. Anyone buying a Tesla is making a bad spending descision. That's because as buggy and as user-unfriendly as macOS and iOS have become under Cook's afwul leadership, there are still no better alternatives on the market in terms of reliability. (Windows are Android are even worse than macOS and iOS, respectively, so it makes sense to still purchase Apple products, even though Cook is a horrible CEO who has constantly made Apple products decline in quality since becoming CEO.) With Tesla, however, there are better alternatives on the market in terms of reliability.

China is a more important market than the US. There are more of them and their middle class is growing not contracting.
You could say the same thing about Apple -- and yet we don't see Apple introducing new functionality in China first.

I'll believe it when I see it - i'm pretty sure my 8 year old Model S can't support it anyway - no bluetooth keys for me either.

Probably won't even get CarPlay despite being on MCU2.

Apple like Tesla have a thing in common. They produce ground breaking products that people buy in droves. Apple in 2025 is where it is due to the excellent management of cook. Tesla in 2025 is where it is due to the visionary Aspect of Musk.

I’ll leave the following here for a thought experiment:

Cook is a horrible CEO who has constanly made Apple products decline in quality since becoming CEO.
I would contend that Apple software has declined under Cook’s leadership rather than the hardware. Apple Silicon has transformed their computers for the best. It’s just that the software looks worse thanks to Alan Dye and its functionality has worsened over time as well.
