The current implementation works flawlessly but the Tesla app does use a lot of battery. Some days it uses 10% of my battery. If the keyless stuff happened without Bluetooth I have to think this would improve. Hopefully still works just as well.
10% of your phone battery or 10% of your cars' battery?

It's because of their sales slump. They need ways to attract new customers after offending lots of potential buyers this year. And their CEO has to meet sales metrics to get a much talked about payout.

So it's not that Tesla wants to support CarPlay and CarKeys to give customers a better experience but rather they need to to attract more buyers.
Well I agree, but I find that customers rarely care about the reason behind a good change, just that it's a good change at the end of the day. Attracting more buyers tends to actually be the reason for giving customers a better experience in any business.

I’ve noticed on a 2023 M3 I haven’t used my keycard in about 6 months however a few times I had to open the Tesla app on either my phone or watch.

Since there are millions of Tesla on the road without NFC I don’t expect this to ever be 100%. But options that increase the value of the ecosystem are great.
Nice car

why on earth is Tesla, a presumably American car company, offering new functionality first in the Chinese market, before only later bringing it to the United States?

Because Americans don't buy electric cars, but they're very popular in China and Tesla needs to fish where the fish are.

Tap-to-unlock via Apple Wallet/NFC is fine as a backup, but it’s not a great primary experience. Tesla’s passive phone key is what people actually want: walk up and go. That seamless experience requires more than NFC it needs well implemented Bluetooth/UWB support.

I Agree. I like how we can just walk up and unlock. But it would be nice to have the backup capabilities too.

25 Toyota Crown Platinum here and the digital key sucks ass. It’s so inconsistent and unreliable! Even Toyota says to carry the key fob with you at all times as a backup, that’s pretty telling. It’s not my phone either as I was using a 16 PM and now 17 PM.

There is a lever people can pull level on the door’s arm rest that opens the door manually. People are either dumb that they don’t know it’s there or don’t think right when they panic.

Tesla can improve it to make it idiot proof and panic proof as much as possible though.

It’s not a joke company. It has done good for our planet than any other company, country, or person has ever done in all of human history.

Yeah, no.

I was involved in the Tesla fire investigation via Transport Canada of the car that caught fire in North Vancouver and the driver had to kick the window out because the electric locks/windows failed and he couldn’t get the door open. In a panic situation people aren’t going to think about where the “emergency release” is located and will instinctively look for a pull handle.

You also conveniently left out any mention of where the rear handle release is. I wonder why? Maybe because it’s in an absolutely horrible location and requires removing trim to first access? I bet kids in the rear seat are going to have no trouble figuring that out. 🙄

On a side note, this vehicle fire was caused by a 12V module under the dash. The HV battery never caught fire. Yet I still see posts using the pics/video of this incident to claim Tesla batteries catch fire/explode.

It's a subtle nudge from Steve Jobs to upgrade to the 18 PM.

Well statistically EV fires are much less likely to happen than ICE fires. Also lookup the mach e recall of unable to exit the vehicle if the power fails. Stuff happens and manufacturers fix things. Ask ford about the ignition issues on the explorer.

Seems to be a mindset shift since we heard the rumor last month that they planned on supporting CarPlay soon, and I’m here for it! More options without affecting existing experiences is almost always objectively better!

I’ve been using Tesla for around 6 years now and honestly the Tesla UI is so good I’d hate to go back to CarPlay personally.

Tesla generates about 100 Billions in revenue a year. Maybe study the company financial first.
maybe you should do it first. here's some help

the 2024FY total revenue is about $100B. so definitely not even near to the mentioned 100s of billions.
bmw, which has comparable car sales to tesla had an annual total revenue of EUR 142B, so about 1.5x as much as the "totally not a car company"

Yes exactly. With most cars you have turn off the system settings that allow the key fob to function. If at a theoretical level a Bluetooth relay attack bothers you:
1. Put on pin to drive
2. Use the Tesla card instead of Bluetooth.

It’s only minimal convenience lost as your driver profile is still saved on the cloud. And the Tesla app still function properly.

At any rate how many teslas have been stolen using a relay attack with pin to drive enabled? I’ll wait patiently for an answer.

I didn’t claim to know anything about this. I asked a question.

If the Apple key is more secure, and means you avoid entering a pin every time you want to start the car, I’d say that’s a worthy addition. I don’t understand why people think they are losing something here.
