He's not wrong. It's been a long time since we saw a new Apple product that was as exciting as, say, the original iPod, the iPhone, or the first Macbook Air.

That said, I think Holzhausen made one good design at Tesla (the Model S, although that is now getting very long in the tooth), and then it got iteratively worse. The Model X looks at best "interesting", the Model 3 design only works from some angles, the Model Y is probably the laziest car design ever (literally a vertically stretched Model 3), and the less said about the Cybertruck the better. I'm a Tesla driver myself, but certainly not because of Holzhausen's designs.
You heard of course that the model letters choose by Musk make the word SEXY. Ford challenged the use of E trademark so they had to change it to 3, so its only S3XY now.

I think if someone studied how long Apple generates profits from each remodel, each new kind of chip they use (that they just speedbump for years), each display technology and how long it takes for these technologies to trickle down to the entire line, one could correctly guess how long it will take for Apple to redesign and update their products. This company makes plans and roadmaps that last 5-10 years. They make contracts that allow them to build iterations of their devices using tech produced from these contracts. They can't reinvent the wheel anymore. They make display contracts, battery contracts, chip contracts and so on. This allows them to make products cheaper to produce (while increasing the price) but it also means they are tied to this tech for several years. So that means every iMac coming out this year will retain the same look for a guaranteed X number of years. Its not going back to the days when the iMac G3 turned into the 4 and then the iMac G5 and then the aluminum in a short number of years. What they do is how its going to be for many years. What they do with the Apple CPU's is already planned, they will not alter plans because a competitor beats them early. All they can do is skip a generation to keep up but even that is expensive to do and most likely will not happen. Apple is in a position where it does not need to shake things up to get attention. They are stuck in a postion where they have to guarantee what they make will make profits and keep the stock price high. Steve Jobs wasnt consumed with that like Tim Cook is. They are not small enough to be nimble about what they sell. So all we have to look forward to is a slow evolution into faster, thinner computers that make Apple more profits per unit. What surprises me is how little they do with software, other than figure out ways to lock it down.

i don’t think that the Apple car will ever come!
The world situation makes it impossible

I don’t care so much about design as I do Apple delivering stable products.

But then, Apple products haven’t killed anyone yet, unlike…

Well, at least Apple can actually deliver products...
That don't burn up when hit by a minor solar geomagnetic storm like 40 Starlink satellites just did. His comment embodies the smugness that oozes from Tesla, and some owners ?. One of my favorite Southpark episodes was about smug pollution in the Bay Area and Hybrids.

The only logical explanation for such a nonsensical and arrogant comment is that the guy is 1) afraid of competition from Apple in the electric vehicle space, 2) frustrated that Apple has poached his employees, 3) both #1 and #2.

Tesla does not even update their cars annually. In its entire run, the Model S has had only 1 iterative revision. I can barely tell the Model 3 and the Model Y apart. Only two new things they have done are Model X (which has not significantly changed since release) and the (gag) cybertruck which they have not delivered. Of all people to complain that Apple is not doing anything new in design it should not be coming from this guy. Even copycat Samsung has done more drastic innovative designs with their foldable phones. UPDATE: I figured out what he must have meant by “There’s Nothing to Look Forward To”. He thinks Apple should announce more products and services that they are not going to deliver for years or ever. That way you can look forward to them. Tesla has set the example here: - Tesla Semi - Tesla Roadster - Tesla Cybertruck And the best one of all… the one you can pay for in advance while looking forward to it and hoping it will one day work: - Tesla Full Self Driving
Tesla: where you can over-promise and under-deliver.

This post is such a bad take.

Literally those 40 satellites and that Roadster sent up years ago are space junk.

if you are the dude that somehow thought 175 cm guys are too high for model T back seats, then please, leave apple design alone ffs

I mean, he's not wrong, even if it might be the kettle calling the pot black. The most interesting change in design that Apple has revealed in the past five or so years might be the MacBook Pro reverting to a more utilitarian design.

Big changes over a decade right?.....

Sounds like jealousy to me. And does he really believe that any Tesla on the road has an inspiring design? I think the Y looks decent, but it’s basically a larger 3 — so a “continuation” and “slight refinement” to use his terms.

He's a bit wrong. I think the AirPods were a pretty new and exciting design. The new iMac is certainly evolutionary, but I think Apple had a good home run with this design. Also, I think he's taking an overly narrow view in considering only industrial design - Apple has been just killing it with regard to SoC design (though I think much of the credit lies with TSMC for making it a reality).

Airpods? They are a great product, but their design is practically identical to earpods with the wires cut off. Not a bad thing, but definitely not new.

They have a point - I just got an iPhone 13 - aside from 5G, and an unnoticeable difference in the screens, I needn't have bothered as it's basically the same phone about 10% faster and with a camera whose results I think is actually a slight downgrade (less DOF making it harder to just point and shoot), nothing else has really changed. I could have kept the 11 for another year or two at least.

That said, there's a bit of "pot kettle black" syndrome. Yay another EV that I can't afford in the same boring nondescript saloon design.

We all know that he’s right but the Apple apologists will backlash as they do.
In 14 years:
1. Trash Can Mac Pro (which was a surprise and fun but ultimately poorly designed)
2. Apple Watch (if you’re into that sort of thing)
3. Wireless earbuds.

And that’s it!
Makes you wonder what they’re spending their tens of billions of dollars of R&D on.
It seams that Apple knows quite a bit more about what the public wants and will actually pay money for that the arm chair CEOs on this site. They have killed it every year for as long as you can to back. Maybe twice they missed. They have 1.8 Billion Users who agree with what they are building.
