Perfect. After 7 years of Tesla ownership across multiple vehicles, I’ll get CarPlay a few months before buying a Rivian. Maybe this downturn will force ev manufactures to stop being anti consumer with their “control the user experience for their benefit” nonsense

Am I the only one who doesn’t think CarPlay is that amazing? It’s not bad at all and way better than most car UI’s but people act like it’s the most game changing to have or not have on their car…
It's worse than Tesla's UI in almost every way..... but it would give me better messaging, PlexAmp and Prologue (audiobooks from Plex) support, so I'm in favour of it being added.

I'm not a developer but that sounds like an over-simplification and underestimation of difficulty to create a good UX.
It’s possible and many cars already do it. Mercedes and Ford both have CarPlay in a section of the screen with other elements like HVAC controls still available. IIRC a Volvo I had a few years ago with Android Automotive also did this.

This should definitely be the case. The large screen is used for all the car's controls so CarPlay can't take up the whole screen lest you lose access to controls. Also I don't think CarPlay is designed to take up a large especially vertical screen so it would probably look odd.

This is how other automakers have done it. It’s odd seeing people say “I don’t want CarPlay taking over my entire car” when it doesn’t actually do that. Automakers are free to decide how CarPlay integration works including placing it on a portion of the screen instead of the entire screen.

Here’s a shot of the Mustang Mach-E (from a MR article no less) showing CarPlay at the top and factory controls at the bottom.

I’ll repeat a previous post from another thread.

CarPlay integration is easy to implement. For example, I can buy a $100 screen with CarPlay built-in so people can add CarPlay to older vehicles.

The idea CarPlay is difficult to implement or requires an entire team of engineers is ridiculous. At its core it’s just a fancy screen casting system (oversimplification but correct).

There are some cars that have a large screen Carplay experience. Some do fullscreen, but as far as I know, if they do touchscreen HVAC controls and no buttons, cars usually don't let you put Carplay in fullscreen, lest you lose the HVAC controls. So probably Tesla would never let it be fullscreen. And they won't do Ultra, which mandates making Carplay fullscreen.

Well other apps for a start... You may not need them but other might.
What apps are you missing in a Tesla? If I texted a lot I could see wanting messages, but I don't so the built in text messages system works ok. Native Audible and Apple Music laid out better then when I had CarPlay in my Outback. Also the responsiveness of the Tesla screen makes the idea of going back to my 2021 Outback feel like I would be going back in time. I also have the "older" hardware with the Intel chip, newer ones are on an AMD and even faster.

Howdy. 10+ year Tesla owner (4 vehicles) and 30+ year Apple owner (??? devices). I also have CarPlay on my Mercedes Sprinter RV and have used it on countless rental cars. So I think I have some experience here.

Teslas’s infotainment system is great. A few things are missing (full Apple iMessage support, support for paid podcast feeds) but these are minor issues.

CarPlay is fine but I don’t miss it on a Tesla. I would be kicking and screaming if I had to use the $&!% infotainment system in the Mercedes Sprinter.

The missing feature with Tesla is that it comes with Musk. I don’t plan to buy another one so long as Musk is there. Lucid and others look good to me these days.

Now, Tesla seems to have abruptly reversed course and apparently intends to add support for the highly requested feature.
I believe Tesla board basically forced Musk to either put CarPlay in or they would try to force him out of the company.

Tesla is desperate right now since ugly Cybertruck sales backfired.

I have loved using CarPlay in my Tesla now mind you I have not really gone on any long road trips so I don’t use superchargers much.

Yes it's very possible, I was just commenting that the user was making it sound like a simple drag and drop 10 second job.

I have CarPlay in my Telsa via. Dongle and webpage. Works great - Browser stays open when driving, audio and video all work and touchscreen responsive... BUT Telsa added Audible and Weather overlays which took away some of the reason for it - so don't use it very much now.

Parking apps are handy
Waze for the PoPo scanners.
Google / Apple maps to double check routes etc

The main issue I have with Telsa is they promised an App store years ago, But the internal usable storage is only 10gb ( they could use the Data storage via USB in the glovebox )

Ugh, Tesla UI and UX is top of the line. I hope they work with Apple's UX team and come up with a custom joined solution, I would really dislike the apple ugly UI over the beautiful Tesla UI.

I told my wife we would never buy a car without CarPlay. I got a tesla and have never missed it. Completely unnecessary with a tesla. Tesla understands what they are doing and CarPlay isnt a huge add on like with other carmakers People going to be watching youtube on the tesla in a few months while they drive...whats the point of CarPlay.

When we got our first Tesla I thought I'd miss CarPlay, but it didnt take long to forget about it. The only app that I would like to be able to run natively is Waze. If CarPlay gives me that ability, so be it.
