I thought there was amazing tech that could turn a simple photo into an animation. Anything that tries to look real will be creepy, otherwise it just cartoonish, artistic, etc. Which will Apple choose?

Apple needs to own its designs.

Not sure why but I am just waiting to watch P$orn on Vision Pro, I bet its going to amazing experience! Tim take my money.

I don’t like when the moderators alter my comments despite me defending them. If that’s the case, better off deleting them or don’t alter them at all as they no longer seem relevant 🫠

I'm wondering about the lighting settings on the bottom - "Natural" vs "Studio" etc. You seem to be capturing your persona using studio lighting; is there a chance it will look better if displayed with the "Studio" lighting setting? Could you show us the difference?

There's a joke in here somewhere about looking like thumbs versus looking like middle fingers.

Really, though, I didn't think either capture was quite right; you're correct that your face isn't as round as the iCulus thinks it is. They'll presumably continue to go back to the drawing board on this given that it's something people will use all the time.

This would be perfect for my current patient who sits at home 24 hours a day watching TV, smoking pot and eating and is now in the hospital with obesity hypoventilation syndrome. Let's get him a Vision Pro for burial!

Apple is going to cave and put emojis and masks on these things. They can keep your faceprint on file with the authorities if they need it but for regular users, they wont use this feature as much as they will when they can be their memoji instead.

Vanitas Vanitatum Omnia Vanitas

Ironically, you cannot see your own persona on video calls so not quite so much vanity.

The best modelers, with the best 3d scanners can’t really make a 3d model perfect. As we have seen again and again on expensive marvel movies.

I think Ai might be able to, when it is able to function in sterescopic view. But all examples that we have seen of Ai are running on already captured video and then the algorithm gets a good amount of time to process it. Not sure if there is any real time algorithm for it yet. And even if there is, there wont be the same amount of data for the vision pro to use to run an algorithm in realtime anyway as even a video of a face has.

Perhaps if it could infer facial expressions based on the tone of your voice.

Can it do micro expressions? I doubt it.

Our faces are very much telling more then we realize ourselves, and face to face communication is more rich then we imagine. I expect this to mature, but it might require a different approach for 100% accuracy. And I doubt it will come soon. Maybe the iphone could be used to get a better Lidar scan in realtime, we are afterall ok with using a webcam for facetiming.

Just think... when they perfect it, that's the end of facial recognition security.

I feel like people are overreacting to the uncanny valley effect. I mean, propose you simply took a HD video and showed people how they look... you can bet quite a few people will think it looks weird and want it taken again. Heck, you can’t take a still photo with most people being happy. They don’t like their mirror reflected-self, or they don’t like the angle etc.

It is hard to accept a portrait of yourself. Your brain has its own competing self-image. I don’t suspect it is possible to have people accept their persona no matter how much better it gets.

That said, to me as an outsider, I’m looking at all these personas and they look fine. Is it a photo, no. But it resembles who I’m looking at… yes. Quite well.

I’ve listened to some podcasts by people who have tried out the personas and the consensus was that it was useful in projecting an impression of engagement and that the uncanny part was only noticable for a short time and then you just got used to it and treated it like the person. A lot of times when people are presented with something that they are not used to their first reaction may be to retract from it. If they persist in trying it, they brain can quickly start focusing on the interaction and less on the presentation and the initial creepy feeling will fade.

Nah, early adopter with the beta version all the way! By the 2nd or 3rd version all the fun challenges are gone! I rather be a leader, than a follower! Early adopters can also send feedback to Apple and shape what is to come!
It sounds like you’re honored to be part of Apple’s beta testing team. I hope you do your part well.

Why though? Technologies like Face ID make a kind of 3D scan of a face. Just having an accurate 2D or stereoscopic picture won’t circumvent that.

I don't know why we are not seeing this yet (as I'm sure someone's going to start a trend and it's all going to kick-off like crazy)
What am I talking about?
People using make-up, prosthetics, a mask even to create amazing/wild/scary etc persona's.

Apple should let you store/save perhaps Ten persona's that you can name, so you could create your real face one for serious stuff, but then be able to recall a whole selection of others you have created.

Come on, this is begging to be done......

Just a few examples:

Slightly better but still a lot of work to do. Should surely improve over time.
