It feels like a software brake preventing everybody from buying the SE3 due to it's more convenient Touch ID. There must be a reason why Apple already spilled some details about the iPhone 14. Having said that with the new feature offered earlier I would have gotten the iPhone 13 but now I likely just wait for the SE3.
Apple should just install both systems in their phones and masks wouldn't matter.

I find it odd that Apple would give you the option to substantially decrease the security of your device for this, but not give you the option to unhide your password as you type it in.

It would be nice if there was an option to allow Face ID to only authenticate the top half of your face (not covered by a face mask). While less secure, it would be super convenient and a fair trade off during these times (assuming this is even possible). I would think the chances of someone else being able to unlock the phone would still be very low. Again, this would only make sense as an option, and the toggle could be hidden deep in Settings so the layperson doesn’t activate it by mistake.
Patting myself on the back for calling this feature back in 2020.

How much less secure is it really?
I doubt if someone got your phone and tried to unlock with a mask it would actually work. It’s less secure by the numbers but in the real world it’s fine.

Touch ID is also less secure then Face ID. But the chances of it working on a stranger is almost zero.

Wouldn't be as necessary if you could tell it to only require the passcode after 10 minutes or whatever. There used to be that option. Oddly enough the "require passcode after" setting is still there, but the only option is "immediately."

Either that or you disable the passcode entirely, which isn't great.

Indeed, it's not really that much less secure in practice.

If you're afraid you might get separated from your phone or are going to sleep and don't want people trying to unlock it, just hold down power and volume up for a couple seconds, then hit cancel. Now FaceID is disabled and you need to use your passcode for the next unlock.

Pretty awesome! Just the other day I was wondering why they hadn't thought of this yet.

I hate that this feature is needed.

It isn't. My 12 mini offers me the opportunity to enter my passcode if it doesn't recognise me, or I just pull the mask down real quick. I haven't yet had one cashier scream blue murder at me when making payments with my phone. We all do often enough for things like, you know, eating, drinking, smoking, etc etc. But, if you're a doctor performing open heart surgery you shouldn't be playing with your phone in the first place. So yes, I'll jump up and down when they actually come up with a useful feature. In the meantime, I'd prefer it if 'they' would invest more time and money figuring out how to live without face masks, not with them.

That was a great video by Dan. I can afford the 3 minutes to see how this new feature demonstrated through a short Video. I’m sure others could spare the 3 minutes too.
He said "iOS fifteen-dot-four," which wreaked havoc here in South Florida. Other than that, the video was fine.

Most people would say "iOS fifteen-point-four."

Which way seems more secure? With an Apple Watch, it doesn’t look at your face at all and will unlock as long as the watch is nearby. This new feature at least looks at your eyes. But Apple themselves admits it’s less secure than full face.
In summary, wish I had TouchID as an option. :D

Since it’s a little less secure than regular FaceID, it would be nice if Apple could add a control center button to quickly enable and disable it without having to dig through settings. That way if your going out for a while, you can quickly turn it on and then have it off other times.

I have Watch Series 7. It unlocks my iPhone 13 Pro Max most of the time. I will keep stronger security with total Face ID. ?

it would be nice says no one. I have not seen one single iPad Pro out in the wild; makes more sense to include in iPhones only, however.
What about all those folks who use an iPad in an office? In a classroom? In a meeting etc... Agree it's nowhere near as much as iPhone, but surely it wouldn't be a big deal for Apple to implement it for the iPad.

What a shame to decrease the security of Face ID for such a lame reason. The Apple Watch solution was the secure solution. This is just a poor decision, that's 2 years too late anyway.
It's not the same though. Apple Watch only unlocks the phone. It doesn't allow authentication for apps. This allows full FaceID functionality.

It works for me about 50% of the time with my mask on. With the mask on, there is a little more of a delay before the phone successfully recognizes me and unlocks.
