Great!!!. Glad it only took (will take, is more accurate) about 2 years of frustration to kind of catch up with the competitors and the user demands!. So happy Apple listens to us and uses the few profits they get to invest in timely solutions!. Even happier that the touches Touch ID is not coming back, I hate it and totally useless!

I would not understand this does not become available on iPad as well. Not being able to use FaceID due to the mask is a big annoyance, and not acceptable when using a device that costs $1k+...
Well it is acceptable as it was not an advertised feature when it was presented.

It’s not a matter of how expensive an item is.

The fact that Apple is willing to deliberately weaken the robustness of a heavily touted security feature in order to facilitate the normalisation of face coverings makes me seriously question their motives going forward. What else will they be willing to do in order to rub up to government decrees in the future? I don’t care if people want to wear masks but I do care that everyone else has to potentially suffer the consequences. I suppose at least you can disable it on your own device, but if the banks and card issuers don’t block this then they too have pinned their colours to the mast.

What a shame to decrease the security of Face ID for such a lame reason. The Apple Watch solution was the secure solution. This is just a poor decision, that's 2 years too late anyway.
Yes I'm sure it costed them 2 years figuring it out because they wanted it to be unsafer than the system without a mask.

Are u all so seriously impaired (mentally and phisycally) to can’t simply move the mask down few inches for just a moment or even faster, input a 4-digits code???? Apple watches, updated iphones with special cameras... seriously??? This is becoming ridicolous.

First, 4-digits code is weak. For sure weaker than this new FaceID via eye. Apple would NEVER release something like that if they know it could decrease a lot the security and including 3rd party apps.

Second, some apps just unlock using FaceID or its own alphanumeric password, for example banks and more. So, if it doesn't unlock using your face, you need to type a big password.

Third, sometimes you just catch your phone to read some notification and you need to pull down your mask just to read it? That's boring. Once? Ok, but try to do it several times in the day like I used to do!

This is great! VERY happy they added this feature and it works as well as it seems to in the video.
I've recently upgraded from 6s to 13 mini and the fact that Face ID doesn't work at all with masks has been driving me crazy. I was even thinking of switching to the new SE once it's out. won't do it now.

I have a question, do you still have the limited Apple Watch option available? I'd rather keep that option as I use Apple Pay on my watch anyway.
This is more about iOS apps requiring Face ID to unlock. mbanking apps and such.

I'm with you on this one. I've been rocking an iPhone 8 for about a year now mostly because I vastly prefer TouchID to FaceID due to the convenience, but now that Apple has introduced unlocking with masks on I'm a bit enticed and thinking about getting a 13 Mini.

This should have been released a year and a half ago. I recently moved to a state without mask mandates and it’s wonderful. Other states will follow soon. European countries are already moving in that direction. Apple is way too late with this feature for most people. Just bring back touch ID, Apple.

having used both Face ID and Touch ID now for a while I find that both have pluses and minuses.
There are certainly many situations when Face ID is more convenient (e.g. when I have gloves on in clod weather. It's 0F right now in Toronto) or just works better (wet hands).
Ideally a phone should have both Face ID and Touch ID but I am not sure we'll ever get that now.

Less security is bad. Just slip your mask down to authenticate (if you are still wearing one). You’re not going to catch a virus by exposing your face for half a second,

Do you have supporting data that security has been "weakened"

Yup. Roughly 70% less of the topography is being scanned.

It’s either that the scan is less discrimnate, or the scan is going to be extremely unforgiving in unlocking on the remaining ~30% of features. Hence why it won’t unlock with mask and sunglasses, but sunglasses were ok before.

And that effects you how? For those of us that choose to wear masks you can enable this if you want which is really useful, personally I wont I just quickly pull my mask down to open my phone as I dont want to weaken my iPhones security, I do feel that Apple are late to the game but since we dont know if another variant will come along I appreciate the feature being an option anyway.
It does not effect me, it’s just my observation. You can wear it when you sleep for all I care.
