Is this coming to the iPad? I’m constantly entering my passcode when FaceID fails because I’m masked. I don’t care on my iPhone SE2 with simple and efficient TouchID. When FaceID works, it’s great. When it fails, as it does more often than not under the pandemic, it’s frustrating. Come on, Apple. 2-years and we are only now getting FaceID masked and only on iPhones.

I have tinting regular glasses so I guess this won't work for me in some cases.

It should. I think the disclaimer regarding sunglasses is for 'normal' folks with functional eyes who wear trendy sunglasses with mirror coatings.

I have transition sunglasses (as a glasses wearer; not normal transitions but they go from yellow to dark brown) and have no problem using FaceID with them. Will be interesting to see how it works with a mask in addition to sunglasses

I would have thought this feature would be too late but here we are still deep in the pandemic.

It's strange that they could put the fingerprint reader in the iPad mini but the iPhone 13 still uses FaceID.

I've installed the Beta on my iPhone 12 and I'm loving this feature (I did it just because this new recognition).

Oh, and I tried to unlock with my sunglass + masks and, for my surprise, IT WORKED!

That's not perfectly YET because it takes a little longer than normal method. It looks like the FaceID try to recognize you completely, if isn't possible, it try to recognize via EyesID (???). To unlock the phone it doesn't affect a lot, but read notifications is boring.

Even that, this is incredible to see. I never thought it'd be possible, so I'm impressed a lot!

Haven't a lot of us been doing this already when attached to our apple watch? This simply takes the watch out of it..... Surprised how many people don't seem to have an apple watch here on MR.

Also funny how many people whine here on MR.... Everything apple does just isn't good enough for some lol.

I think you’re missing the point. ‘Face ID With a Mask’ works everywhere Face ID is used; the watch method doesn’t. The watch method is strictly just for unlocking the iPhone only. You still need to show your full face or enter in your passcode everywhere else Face ID is used, such as Apple Pay or in other apps.

The reduced security will probably halt use and introduction of Face ID with mask in Sweden with Bank-ID.

it would be nice says no one. I have not seen one single iPad Pro out in the wild; makes more sense to include in iPhones only, however.
See me use iPad, and you will change your mind. Guaranteed.
Oh wait, you just ignore? Fine then.

It’s a shame this feature is not available for iPad and not available for anything but latest iPhone. I use iPhone so little nowadays iPad supporting this feature makes way more sense.

So it doesn't work with sunglasses.
But what if you have this feature turned ON, AND you're NOT wearing a mask but are wearing sunglasses -- does the phone unlock then?
Depending on the sunglasses you might have to turn off ”require attention” for it to work with sunglasses. This issue was addressed by Apple when Face ID was first released in 2017.

How much less secure is it really?
I doubt if someone got your phone and tried to unlock with a mask it would actually work. It’s less secure by the numbers but in the real world it’s fine.

Touch ID is also less secure then Face ID. But the chances of it working on a stranger is almost zero.
The chances of Touch ID are 1 in 50 000 to be exact.

I would not understand this does not become available on iPad as well. Not being able to use FaceID due to the mask is a big annoyance, and not acceptable when using a device that costs $1k+...
I don’t recall once in 2 years I had a mask and an iPad I the same time.

The iPhone 12 requirement makes me angry because it's a clear ploy to get people to upgrade their phones. The 11 series is still a good enough phone for most people and my guess is not enough people are upgrading so they need a bit of an extra stick.

Anyway, not that big a deal; there's a good chance masks won't be required in most places much longer.

If they wanted to get more upgrades why not only activate it on the iPhone 13? The answer is clearly they didn’t do it to sell more iPhone 13s.

The clear reason is the iPhone 12 has 80% higher neural engine performance than the iPhone 11, meaning the 11 was either too slow or inaccurate or both.
