Indeed I'm more concerned about keyboard reliability. It looks like it's a minor issue but de facto a keyboard that is impossible to repair after Apple care expires makes the new Mac pros zero resale value, and that's unacceptable expecially if one buys the 6000 dollars model.

Anyone know what the problem was? Seems it's actually cooling itself better now somehow. Is it the fan speed or some power optimization I don't understand?

My understanding is that all 2018 MBPs were affected by the throttling issue.

My guess is that we are going to see a rehash of all the reviews, particularly the one’s with serious benchmark tests.

Given the new Intel turbo boost mode my expectations are that there won’t be a lot of performance difference between different Intel chips (i7 vs i9), at most high single digits on a percentage basis.

David Lee has also made a vid about the Dell:

And, the following review of the MBP issue was just published yesterday:

It's a complex issue involving insufficient cooling as well as faulty voltage regulation (VRM) supplied to the CPU, with both the Mac and the Dell. It does not seem to be an issue with the large form factor gaming laptops with plenty of cooling. I would prefer to let a few weeks pass (at least) before making a final verdict of "problem fixed". You can bet that the folks who are testing these boxes will be busy doing just that very soon. In the meantime, if I was on the threshold of purchasing either the MBP or the Dell i9/6 core for megabucks, I'd be holding off committing for a while.

Ur guess is as good as mine in this case. Speculation is rampant and I doubt Apple will be forthcoming with answers.

My personal guest is that it is a compilation of different solutions, ie Apple threw the kitchen sink into placating this problem. Fan control, voltage limits, power envelopes, etc, were all changed (and maybe further changes will come hidden in future updates of MacOS)

But I thought it was a hardware issue with no chance to be fixed with software?

Good job, Apple.

And don’t tell me it should have been perfect day 1. The Dell XPS still throttled and what’s Dell doing? Have they admitted an issue like Apple and rolled out a fix in less than a week? No. Either Dell doesn’t care or they are incapable of fixing it.

Apple screws up sometimes, but I’ll be damned if they don’t take care of the issue.

Apple haters act like the alternatives are flawless when Apple has the tiniest issue.

Can anybody please compare heat, fan noise level and battery life before and after the patch on different models?

Of course every youtuber who ganged up on the #throttlegate mob will now post a heartfelt apology video for jumping the gun.

Yep, any minute now...
Ha, don't hold your breath on that one, only controversy gets the followers.

Could have been easily avoided by proper quality assurance, although perhaps all this talk about the new MacBook Pros might even benefit Apple, it gets people more interested in the product. At least it's been fixed.

It just seems that for every new Apple product lately, there's a big issue since the day they're released.
How do you know that? Again, replicating issues with precision is not as easy as it sounds. Clearly, Apple’s own testing missed this, but does that really mean anything significant if they fixed it almost immediately and cared enough to follow up?

Why do you think software gets beta tested? You need a lot of input to find every issue, like Samsung found out with the battery problem. Samsung is an amazing manufacturing company and just missed something. That was a far bigger deal than this, but shows things happen. Don’t overreact.

It's sad that I'm this cynical about Apple now, but 'missing key in the firmware' as the excuse, which no one else has the cryptographic ability to verify themselves, sounds like covering up a blatant hardware blunder here.

But my comment may be premature and not well informed, does anyone have a comment?

Is there a way to inspect Apple's fix to see if it did hardware instruction kernel changes like the one posted on Reddit, or will we never know as it's all closed source?

Missing key in the firmware my ass...

More of a bandaid rather than a fix since performance is pretty much the same as pre-update and it doesn't apply to boot camp?

according to the topic, it's not the same as pre-fix

bootcamp drivers have always been crappy. I wouldn't hold out hope for apple to fix this for bootcamp anytime soon.

did you like not read the original post? why do you care what the problem is if people have verified it's much better? gotta focus on the results.
