It's sad that I'm this cynical about Apple now, but 'missing key in the firmware' as the excuse, which no one else has the cryptographic ability to verify themselves, sounds like covering up a blatant hardware blunder here.

But my comment may be premature and not well informed, does anyone have a comment?

Is there a way to inspect Apple's fix to see if it did hardware instruction kernel changes like the one posted on Reddit, or will we never know as it's all closed source?

Missing key in the firmware my ass...

This post reminded me of my favorite sight gag from Modern Family.

Of course every youtuber who ganged up on the #throttlegate mob will now post a heartfelt apology video for jumping the gun.

Yep, any minute now...

Jumping the gun? The product was released to market and didn't perform as advertised. They called Apple out and got a quick fix. Seems pretty groovy to me. It remains to be seen if the i9 upgrade offers any tangible benefit.

CNET's i9 could maintain almost 4GHz without throttling?

I would like one of those please.

That's because Dell doesn't give two tugs of a dead dog's dick about the customer or the product after the sale is complete.
That actually wasn't my experience after my purchase of an XPS-13 Developer's Edition (came with Ubuntu pre-installed) 18 months ago. Dell engineers personally responded to certain issues with firmware updates to address the Spectre security problems with Intel CPUs, and also dealt with users experiencing "coil whine" - an irritating high pitched hum some folks had (fortunately, not I) - with prompt attention. Perhaps the Dell folks behind the "Developer Edition" project are more attentive than the rest of the Windows oriented tech people, but I have had no complaints with them. I'm typing this on my little XPS-13 right now. It's about 18 months old and has served me well as a Linux platform laptop. I don't run enough CPU intensive applications to experience throttling, though my 2 core i7 CPU tends to run a little warm - usually around 50 C. Just for the heck of it, I ran Geekbench on it today, got expected performance, and the CPU hit around 85 C during one benchmark testing multi-core. Just my experience. BTW, running Geekbench on my 2017 iMac with a Core i5-7600K (4 cores), it outperformed the i7-7500U (2 cores) by roughly 30%. The 4 cores in the desktop i5 outperform the 2 cores on the laptop i7, and runs about 15 degrees C cooler on average.

Ur guess is as good as mine in this case. Speculation is rampant and I doubt Apple will be forthcoming with answers.

My personal guest is that it is a compilation of different solutions, ie Apple threw the kitchen sink into placating this problem. Fan control, voltage limits, power envelopes, etc, were all changed (and maybe further changes will come hidden in future updates of MacOS)
Well they said it was just some driver or kext not working due to a missing signature, so it sounded like a single thing.

Why? It was a real problem that the Youtuber brought to light. For what would they apologize? Sorry Apple God we found an issue with throttling. Please forgive us!

Because nobody cares.

It's just the way it is, everything Apple is headline news, who would click an article about some random Dell laptop they've never heard of before?
Well Apple moto is It Just Work (until it doesn't then we deflect to other companies). But what about Dell?

Or they will not make an apology video, well because... hating on Apple brings them a lot of views.
Apologize that they found a problem? If anything, Apple should be thankful of these vloggers finding a bug in their firmware something that Apple missed.

Yeah dell has improved their customer service, but their machines are little buggy than the macbooks. Thats my personal opinion though. If macbook pro throttling wasn't fixed i was thinking about a dell xps

Thanks for making his point :)
It Just Work
But I thought it was a hardware issue with no chance to be fixed with software?

Good job, Apple.

And don’t tell me it should have been perfect day 1. The Dell XPS still throttled and what’s Dell doing? Have they admitted an issue like Apple and rolled out a fix in less than a week? No. Either Dell doesn’t care or they are incapable of fixing it.

Apple screws up sometimes, but I’ll be damned if they don’t take care of the issue.

Apple haters act like the alternatives are flawless when Apple has the tiniest issue.
Performing worse than previous gen isn't exactly tiniest is it? Also it just work until it doesnt then we go to whataboutism.

No i like the mac but also wanna run windows so bit of a stupid reply isnt it
It is not a Windows machine so no, it wasn't a "stupid" response. Get over it! Be happy Apple even allows such a crappy OS to run at all on their machines.

I wonder how well the new MacBook Pro performs when sitting on a cold pack the size of those thicker heavier noisier Core i7/i9 laptops? Just pull an ice pack out of the freezer when you need a bit of extra performance?

This still won't shut the Apple haters up.

I hate such idiotic comments!

Because they follow the ever popular „if you are not for us, you’re against us“ spin.

Tell you what:
The world has more than two colors. There is bashing and there is justified criticism. It’s NOT the same. Be grateful instead and keep your hate for other opinions for yourself!

Also don‘t believe for a second that Apple would have fixed it without the massive bad press - at least not that quickly.

I don’t give Apple (or any other company) the benefit of the doubt. Why?
Here in Germany in many many stores it’s almost impossible to get Genius appointments exactly since the start of the free keyboard repair program. But Apple claims it only affects a minuscule number of people...
And it also only happened after massive criticism.

Criticism can lead to things getting better for the customer. Sorry, but that’s a fact.

https://www.nytimes.com/2006/04/05/technology/apple-allows-windows-on-its-machines.html

"We think Boot Camp makes the Mac even more appealing to Windows users considering making the switch," Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, said in a statement.

I think Apple is happy that the customers were considering or have made the switch. Just saying.
