I told you before, get a private jet and quit slumming it.

I kept getting spammed by one of these “private jet by the hour” companies. I’d tried the unsubscribe link (to no avail) a couple of times but it didn’t work. One day I snapped, hit reply and put a link to my LinkedIn with the message, “Doug, I’m doing ok but I clearly don’t have private jet money”. Never heard from them again :)

(Aaaaand way off-topic)

“Slowest” is a bit misleading. It’s not an i3. And good arguments can be made for thin and quiet. But, I’d probably go with the Dell.

How is finishing the Premiere test last of those 6 i9 Laptops not the "slowest"? He said it and the guy is pretty straight up so how is not the slowest???

Look I am a big Apple fan and outside of their computers I am all Apple (iPhone, iPad Pro, watch, Apple TV's, multiple home pods, Apple music family plan). I still own two Mac's, one is the 2017 15inch Macbook Pro but my job as a network engineer on a network team, does not require a Macbook.

In fact my Lenovo ThinkPad T580 is my Laptop of choice these days because of the Ethernet port and the touch screen. It has two batteries and yes it is thicker and heavier but I choose it over my Macbook Pro because I do not want to deal with dongles and the touch screen is great. Also for things for software that only runs on Windows, like Visio for network diagrams. Yes I have OmniGraffle but even with the latest version, opening up complex Visio diagrams is a mess and not worth the time to fix it for me.

Apple took away the MagSafe, gave me a useless touchbar and I pretty much hate the keyboard still, even though I have had no problems and I have gotten use to it, it just sucks when it comes to typing compared to my ThinkPad. My Macbook is a thing of art, but honestly the T580 is not crazy thick. I would pay good money for a thicker Macbook with a Ethernet port and a USB A port.

Still though, they seem to be running the i9 MBP pretty close to the line. Will be interesting to see what the longevity is on this generation when used under heavy load a lot, especially since the CPU power delivery components appear to not have much in the way of heat removal.

On high end machines, you can't just cool the CPU, you need to cool the parts responsible for feeding the CPU its power.

Yes. Would be good to see how well these laptops hold up after a couple months of rendering.

Then again if you bought a laptop for rendering I think you probably should have bought a desktop....as in a tower, not an iMac

yep.. no one with one of these computers at hand seem to be running or showing these types of tests though.

oh well.

—-maybe there aren’t any benchmark tests to do it?
if not, i have about a hundred different ways to test for it in real world usage scenarios.. so if someone could kindly let me borrow theirs for a bit... ;)

(but really, i think at this point, i’ll get one myself in another week or two.. i’ll show it then.. i’m pretty confident the listed turbo spec is real)
For multi-core at a given temperature, we just need to see frequency vs time, starting at 0 seconds. That would give us everything we need to know. These tests show that, but they don't start at 0.

I used to see Mac Pro cheesegraters on carts in the film studios. The new Mac Pro is a mess, so maybe that's a reason to avoid it.

I hate such idiotic comments!

Because they follow the ever popular „if you are not for us, you’re against us“ spin.

Tell you what:
The world has more than two colors. There is bashing and there is justified criticism. It’s NOT the same. Be grateful instead and keep your hate for other opinions for yourself!

Also don‘t believe for a second that Apple would have fixed it without the massive bad press - at least not that quickly.

I don’t give Apple (or any other company) the benefit of the doubt. Why?
Here in Germany in many many stores it’s almost impossible to get Genius appointments exactly since the start of the free keyboard repair program. But Apple claims it only affects a minuscule number of people...
And it also only happened after massive criticism.

Criticism can lead to things getting better for the customer. Sorry, but that’s a fact.
Are you calling my comment idiotic?

As the update says, Dell is on par with MBP. What fix does it need? Unlike Apple, Dell did not screw up in a first place. Apparently they employ real QA engineers instead of relying on YouTube gurus.

No, Dell's XPS suffer from the same issue. No update has been released to address this.

"Lee went even further and tested six laptops equipped with an i9 from various manufacturers. Unsurprisingly, thicker laptops with better cooling did outperform thinner laptops, including the MacBook Pro. The Alienware 17 R4, Acer Helios 500, and Asus G703 (all very thick) saw higher average clock loads.

The Dell XPS 15 and the Zenbook Pro were right on par with the 2018 MacBook Pro."

Umm did we watch the same video????? Put down the Fanboy!!!

Seriously the thicker laptops CRUSHED the Macbook Pro, achieving 4.5-5.0ghz through the tests and NEVER throttling. The Macbook Pro was stuck at the base speed so not to throttle. He also said that ASUS and the Dell were FASTER because they were slightly thicker and he also said the Macbook was the slowest of the 6 but the quietest.

So if you want the slowest, most expensive, but thinnest and quietest get the Macbook.

i want the one that doesn't have less than 2 hour battery life. because being portable is what makes a laptop a laptop.

Other companies wouldn’t even have such a repair program. If you are lucky you might as an individual get a repair under your warranty rights but there wouldn’t be a repair program. It’s always taken a few weeks to get a genius appointment where I live. It’s been like that for years.

Obviously not. If you make a video or write an article about Dell, it won't generate that many clicks. It's issues with the Apple products they are always on the hunt for.
. Yep most of it was click bait. Annoyingly I’ve had my YouTube feed filled with over dramatic videos of people with their head in their hands saying I returned my MacBook Pro. Or pics of a MacBook with fail, returned or crosses in large red type. All click bait.

Apple today released an important bug fix for 2018 MacBook Pros, which was designed to address an issue that caused the machines to excessively throttle when doing system intensive tasks.

The bug fix came in the form of a supplemental update to macOS High Sierra 10.13.6, which many new MacBook Pro owners have now installed on their machines. Multiple MacBook Pro owners and media sites have been testing the new patch, and the results appear to be largely positive -- the throttling issue has been resolved for the most part and the machines are performing better.

CNET for example, did some before and after testing with a video encoding test. Prior to the patch, the Core i9 machine the site tested saw frequent fluctuations in internal temperature and CPU clock speed, while after updating, the CPU throttling in the Core i9 MacBook Pro ceased, with the clock frequency of the cPU and internal system temperature remaining stable.

Macworld shared some preliminary test results from its 4K Adobe Premiere test and had similar results, with even clock speed at or above base rather than spiky throttling. Macworld estimates that prior to the patch, the 2018 Core i9 15-inch MacBook Pro was 11 percent faster than the last year's comparable 2.9GHz Core i7 MacBook Pro. After the patch, "it's more like 20 percent faster."

Dave Lee, who highlighted the throttling problem in the first place, tweeted some post-patch test results and said the performance was much better.

Geekbench Labs founder John Poole tested the 2018 Core i9 MacBook Pro after the patch and found that it was faster with a more stable processor frequency. It was slightly slower than the 2018 Core i7 MacBook Pro. Poole says that while long running heavily multi-threaded tasks are going to see similar performance on the Core i9 and Core i7 machines, single and lightly-threaded tasks should be faster on the i9.

MacRumors reader Aea shared pre-patch and post-patch Cinebench benchmarks done with the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Core i9 chip showing the jump in score following the update.

Multiple Reddit users with 2018 MacBook Pro models have been sharing their benchmarking and testing results after installing the supplemental update and have seen significant improvements. This image from Reddit user XNY, for example, depicts a before and after from a 13-inch 2018 MacBook Pro with a Core i5 chip.

reddittest-800x306.jpg

Another Reddit user (apple_) confirmed that following the update, his Core i9 machine is performing consistently better. The throttling issue was first discovered just a few days after the MacBook Pro models were released, when YouTuber Dave Lee tested the top-of-the-line 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro with 2.9GHz Core i9 chip using Adobe Premiere Pro and found that it was underperforming compared to a 2017 MacBook Pro due to what Lee said was an "unacceptable" level of throttling.

Apple reached out to Lee to and worked with him to replicate his workflow, getting to the source of the bug. Apple discovered that there was a missing digital key in the MacBook Pro firmware that impacted the thermal management system, driving down clock speeds under heavy thermal loads. This was a problem that appears to have affected all 2018 MacBook Pro models.

The problem appears to have been successfully addressed in today's macOS High Sierra supplemental update, and Apple has issued an apology to customers who experienced less than optimal performance on their new 2018 machines.

Customers who have a 2018 MacBook Pro and have not installed the update should do so immediately to see the performance improvements for themselves.

Update:Dave Lee, who first found the throttling issue, also uploaded a new video and says the supplemental macOS High Sierra update has successfully fixed the throttling issues that he saw prior to the patch.

Using the same Adobe Premiere render time test, Lee found that the Core i9 MacBook Pro was significantly faster than the 2017 Core i7 model that had beaten it prior to the patch.

Lee went even further and tested six laptops equipped with an i9 from various manufacturers. Unsurprisingly, thicker laptops with better cooling did outperform thinner laptops, including the MacBook Pro. The Alienware 17 R4, Acer Helios 500, and Asus G703 (all very thick) saw higher average clock loads.

The Dell XPS 15 and the Zenbook Pro were right on par with the 2018 MacBook Pro. None of the laptops tested beat the MacBook Pro when it came to noise level though, with the MacBook Pro winning out as the quietest of the bunch. Lee says that overall, the Core i9 MacBook Pro is performing the way that a 6-core MacBook Pro should, but he wishes Apple had engineered a better thermal solution for the i9.

Ehmmmm am I missing something? Where is the famous 70% difference from last year’s MBP compared to 2018???

They probably never will release a fix. That’s where you have to give it to Apple. They quickly fix problems. Other companies would just ignore the issue.
Actually yes. In this case Apple has come good quite fast, I'm pretty happy with that. Looks like the latest MBP is now set for a clean run, which means the next iteration will be.... perfect of course!

Nice work Apple on the quick fix.

Suggestion for your post Morten: how could you customers find this bug so quickly and easily, and you miss it internally?
I guess someone called them out on it and so they have adapted. Good result all roundas long as these macbooks dont suffer heat related failures in a few months time ....

There’s no updated processor for it yet.

That doesn’t matter to the complainers. They just bash and blame Apple by accusing them of withholding updates for the $$$.

Seriously I have been around these forums long enough to see the same complaint over and over and over and over. If there is one 8th generation processor, people think there are millions of them.

And this is where more testing needs to be done with a Final Cut Pro X. FCPX is so well optimized that it crushed Adobe Premiere in many tests. Not all of us use Premiere. I use FCPX on Mac and Premiere on a different computer with a GTX 1080. FCPX still slams my other computer in many exports and edits even if the computer specs on paper aren’t as good as the windows PC.

Adobe just needs to optimize Premiere better on macOS. I’m also getting to the point where I absolutely hate subscription model applications. I paid $50 a month since CC first came out. If I stop paying, I get ZERO access to my work.

Same every year. Intel paper launch some 90w+ desktop part and OEMs paper launch some desktop based on it and the “Waiting on the 20xx MBP” thread flies into a 6 month rage that the new MBP isn’t released. It gets old.

But still... Putting it in a freezer will give even better performances?

Seems good but we'll, I bet Apple will reinvent a new cooling system on futures models, just because you know... Keep everything quiet...
