The mainstream wanted a bigger iPhone when the 5S came out. Did apple deliver? NO.

The mainstream wanted a smaller iPad in 2010 and 2011. Android small tablets took off. Did Apple deliver? NO.

Apple did deliver when the tech was right. Remember those early Phablets by Samsung that had 3 hour battery life?

Apple never rushes hardware to the market. They would rather be a little late and offer a polished product than a little early an offer a turd.

Any cheap POS china brand can build a hardware clone of the iPhone. The real trick is duplicating Apple's ecosystem:

1. Retail stores
2. Awesome customer service
3. Rock solid OS
4. Content services - iTunes, AppleMusic, AppStore, LiveTV (soon)
5. A strong market of secondary buyers (helps resale value)
6. Mobility services - TouchId, ApplePay, Maps, Ect

And then tie those all together in a platform that does not data mind you or feed you ads.

So far no one is even close in duplicating the iPhone ecosystem.

The retail stores are great.
The customer service is usually great.
The o/s hasn't been rock-solid since iOS6.
Most people hate iTunes but the App Store is good
Resale value, yep, that's great too.
TouchID is good, ApplePay is ok, Google wins with maps hands down...

The 16GB is not a rip off, if you want an iPhone, like to keep the majority of your pictures and videos on your main computer, and don't have many big apps then it's ideal.

People new to smartphones, or who don't own a Mac/iPad and who couldn't care less about continuity etc still buy iPhones in their droves. They couldn't care less about the ecosystem, certainly not at the time of purchase, and yet they still buy iPhones. This would point to marketing, fashion, perceived greatness and things other than the hardware/software itself being the no.1 consideration.

PS, I'm not an Apple hater either. I just grow more disillusioned by the year with their products. For what it's worth, the iPhone 4 remains my favourite piece of tech ever. I loved that thing.

I agree... I set up a lot of iPhones for people and they don't care about iCloud, many don't own other Apple products. The iPhone is a brilliant phone, but a lot of sales come of hype, marketing etc.

The 6+ is a rancid device. Nothing screams 'rushed to market' like the 6+.

You have a point. But many of those who have no idea about ecosystem are relying on others by word of mouth. They just hear their friends say the iPhone is awesome and follow their recommendation.

But the other proof is Apple's upgrade retention is the highest in the industry.

So what it all comes down to is that whatever Apple decides is right? Well, there isn't anything more to discuss then given that Apple would always be right in that no matter what. What's the point of this whole thread then? Just to say Apple is always right?

That doesn't matter. You argue that Apple always know and deliver what the market wanted, and they obviously didn't in those circumstances.

I don't recall any Android handset having to scale an OS down from a higher resolution and being stutterly as a result.

What a ridiculous system. I agree, rushed.

Again Apple focuses on the mass market. Phablets were not mainstream when the 5S came out.

That's a lot of restrictions to put on a particular model, for a company that is "dedicated to making the best products on earth" (direct Apple quote)

I 'upgraded' from the iPhone 5 to the 6+ and although the screen size and resolution is fabby, the battery life awesome and the loudspeaker very pleasant indeed; the reloading issue, stuttering, crashing, screen freezing and poor touchscreen responsiveness were HUGE downgrades over a two generations older device. I'm sorry but I just can't ever love such a disappointing and frustrating device. The newest and most expensive iPhone to date has been the most disastrous for me and plenty of others.

iPhone is the best selling phone in the world
iPad is the best selling tablet
iPod was the best selling digital player
Watch is the best selling computing wearable

Yup. Sure looks like they are making the best products on earth.

I never heard anyone else say the 6+ stutters, crashes, screen freeze, poor touch screen. You probably had a defective unit.

My 6+ runs as smooth as butter.

Larger screened phones were. Apple acknowledged it, that they were not giving customers what they wanted.

How many phablets were sold in 2012 when the 5S came out?

Probabily about 30 million. That isn't main stream at all.

You've obviously not been out that much. The 6 and 6+ definitely stutter. Every single one I've ever used does, including a number of Apple display units.

Look into the threads on Macrumours and you'll see it.
