The 17" is a monster! It dwarfs the 13"! (pics)

My wife just got the 17" (to replace her old 15" MBP). She does a lot of document work (she telecommutes), and puts two documents up side by side. I offered to hook up an external monitor so she could use a smaller MBP - but no, she wanted the 17" and she loves it. It's basically a desktop replacement, though. She will move it around the house - but when she leaves the house she takes her 1st generation Air.

My MBP is only 15".... so yes, her computer is bigger than mine. But I've got a Mac Pro at my desk, so I guess that evens it out.

That 17" is nice though. When I've had a chance to get my mitts on it, it's been a really nice experience.

"Now's not the time for **** measuring, Stuart!"

Sorry, couldn't help it.:D Taken 2008

I saw the 17" next to the 15", and the 13". It really is nice! The screen really is stunning. I am picking up a 15", but would have no problem getting the 17". Not to big at all. After looking at the 13", then back to the 17". 17" got better, and better. I was picking all of the MBP up, opening them, closing them. Knocking on them. (Just kidding on that last one).
I probably looked a bit crazy, but I really wanted to get a feel for the machine like if it was mine.

17" is straight meat.

i sold my sony vaio z and just ordered ( 2h ago) mbp 17 with 128ssd and 8 gb ram, non glossy screen. glossy screens are also nice but i prefer non glossy (althouhg i don't do any photo editing, but just computing)
i think it worth go for 17 in place of 15 because dims are not so different and 1 lbs of weight difference is not a lot. however if choice is between 13 and 17 of course it's a personal choice.
vaio z is really light, half of weight of 17. I am happy to return to mac after 4 years :D i had experience with dell and sony but definetly apple is best.

Ahaha this reminds me of a few years ago, when my mom called me and said "I want a mac, what should I get?" I was really busy with work and I said "hold off, I'll call you right back."

A couple of hours later and she's already gotten the 17" pro, semi-spec'd out, basically for Skyping and for note taking in class (she's in grad school). Then she complained about how big & heavy it was!

Those are interesting pictures.

On the face of it, 17" sounds to be about four inches longer than 13", but the overall area difference in both displays is tremendous as your picture in the first post shows.

I think the 17" MBP is a professional level desktop replacement computer. The 13" MBP, while it share a similar name, is neither a desktop replacement nor a professional machine.

At best the 13" inch MBP is a very, very high end, sleek, sexy consumer laptop. And while it's the best consumer laptop on the market, and perhaps most expensive "entry level" laptop sporting just the standard Core 2 Duo and modest RAM and modest hard drive, it's an amazing machine on many levels.

That being said, it's not in the same league as the 17" inch MBP.

For my purposes, and budget, if my next Mac is to be a laptop, the 13" inch MBP is just perfect for me since I won't be a heavy filmmaker or hardcore gamer. It's still a little more machine than I need, but that will ensure more longevity. :)[/I]

Now obviously this is pre-update, but I think a lot of people still feel this way.

Dunno, you say "CONSUMER" as if it's not possible to use it otherwise...I find the 13" to be a more than adequate professional machine, provided that you sneak a 7200rpm or SSD in there. I mean... dual core i7, 8gb RAM, SSD...any of us would have creamed ourselves over this a few years ago.

As for screen size, I don't know about you all but when I hunker down into music editing I'll always hook to an external display--this has been my experience with most professional users; either that or they have a Mac Pro etc. on which to get very, very serious.

If you can live with the integrated graphics, bump specs yourself and need the added portability, I find the 13" pretty much the perfect machine for my needs.

And sorry if this is a double post. Using my iPhone while my 13" MBP is on its way :D

I have owned the following Mac Notebooks:

iBook G4 14"
MacBook Pro 15" Santa Rosa Core 2 Duo
MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Core 2 Duo
MacBook Pro 15" Dual Core i7 2010 Hi-Res

The Size is Just right. But now I think I have out grown it. I need and WANT a higher res screen. If they made the 15" in 1900x1200 then I would stay 15. No its "not to small". Increase your font size if you cant see. Get glasses. Whatever.

So I am going to the 17" this time. As soon as Tax Return money hits, 17" all the way.

Meh. 2 or so pounds heavier and a couple of inches larger for several times the power and desktop-esque expandability. If that makes it immobile than...no it doesn't actually.

I mean if all you do is listen to itunes and update your Facebook status (and need to do it on a plane?) than the 13" is unbeatable :D.

Haha. Agreed. Or just get an iPad.

I was always bothered by the 17" it has the normal keyboard which looks so small i wish they would have added a numberpad to the 17" model there just seems like soo much wasted space on the palm rest and by the keyboard.

The 15 incher is actually quite massive as well. If somehow a 6750 was 13'' laptop compatible and had good battery... I prolly would have gotten the 13''. (provided resolution was at least 1440x900)

Its definitely heavier than my dell laptop for certain (the 15.) 17... is just overkill in size i think.

just saw this thread. I gotta say, i love my 17. it's perfect for how i use it, and I carry it around campus with me all day, every day. It's about the same size, thinner, and lighter than my old 16" HP pavilion.

AlphaDogg, yes -- I remember I was quite the Mac aficionado/evangelist when I was 14 years old as well (I just turned 30 last weekend). I had just gotten my grand-spanking new PowerMac 9500/120 and I was running a chat forum on TalkCity called #MacTalk and we formed a group called "The Mac OS Place" on the Hotline network. We were a proud little group of young Apple guys, back in the day...

It was Christmas of 1995 when I was 13 that I got my first modem, a 28.8kbps TelePort Platinum, and I was on the Apple eWorld service for about 4 months before they discontinued it. The 9500/120 was actually my second Mac, my first was a Macintosh LC II that I got when I was 10 years old in 1992. Quite the upgrade, the Power Macintosh was the most powerful machine in Apple's lineup at the time, and with the 17" monitor it was about a $6000 system. Things really took off when I got to beta test for @Home with the cable modem in 1997, and I got my first PowerBook that year as well, a PowerBook 5300cs/100. Wow, the MacBooks of today are MUCH more powerful than the PowerBooks of 1996 or 1997. Playing anything larger than a 320x240 resolution QuickTime movie really wasn't possible, and YouTube hadn't even been invented at that time, much less DVD or USB. I did use the floppy drive quite often, and the Nickel Metal Hydride batteries would often die and have to be replaced. I also had to send that PowerBook in a few times for recall and repairs. Apple's come a long way since then, and I'm glad to say I'm still a Mac faithful and have never owned a Windows PC in my life!

I went from 17" to 13".........the 17 was great, but it rarely got taken anywhere because of how big, heavy, and uncomfortable it is to carry around. On the other hand the 13 is just right to carry around everyday, every where.

another thing that made my transition easier is the fact that I also got an iMac when I got rid of the 17MBP, so when I need the extra screen real estate...I can have it.

Ok and your point being??? The 17" model has been out for how many years now? And your just now making an issue of its size?

It looks like they're mating. iPod nano babies? That grow into iPads?

Yes, I am delirious.

I was at a friend's house, and they have a 17" MacBook Pro. I had my 13" MBP with me, and I compared. The 17 inchers are insane! They have a great screen res, but have an immense lack of portability... This is helpful info for people who are considering getting a 17".

Sorry for the quality! I had to put my iPhone above my head to take the pic (the 17" is that big or I'm just short) and I didn't allow it to autofocus...

this required an entire post and pics? maybe i missed an additional detail but what is the big deal?

I really don't find a 17" less portable than a 15". I've had both. You still got to cary the thing with you. It's not like you can stick the 15" or 13" MBP in your back pocket.

I got a 2011 17" MBP sitting on my chest right now. I take it all around the house bring it to work. Take it out on the deck. Don't get me wrong, if I was a frequent traveler I would have an MBA or an iPad for that purpose where ultimate portability is at a premium.

But for my needs I wanted the power of a desktop without being tethered to a desktop. I got that with the 17" quadcore which is still a very like sleek portable machine by any standard except possibly the new ultrabook class.
