Looking at the 17" photo again, I really wish I had one lol
I hate having to drag my windows to each side of my screen to compensate.

Can't wait to get my 17 classic tomorrow! I don't know what I'll do with my 15".
Sell it on the marketplace, like you do with all of your "rejected" MacBook Airs...

I wish I could have all of the screen real-estate of the 17" in the form factor of the 13"... How about a foldable screen? (hint hint, if any Apple execs are reading this) But the C2D processor in my 13" suits me well. I have upgraded it to 8GB RAM and a 5200RPM HDD, and it performs quite well. When I get home from school, I put my MBP at my desk with my external display (as seen in this picture) and it is just fine.

I am new to the Mac world. My machine is a 17" MPB. Got it a month ago and love it! It's large and I like it that way. It's replacing my Windows desktop machine. I'll be getting a bag for it and it will be portable. That said, since it's my personal machine, it wont go everywhere my work laptop does. My wife got the 13" MBP. Hers seems tiny when I have to use it. Love my 17"!

I have a 13, 15, and 17". At only one pound heavier than the 15 and still a very thin 1", I find the 17" easily portable. It's the finest 17" laptop of all!

When I had my MBP 17", I thought it was extremely portable. It weighs less than a school book.

The size and weight of the 17" was a huge deciding factor in portability and me deciding to get the 15" i7 just last month.

I am happy I stuck to the 15" for portability to the office on a daily basis, and desk real estate as well :).

Ideally instead of a 13 MBP I would like a 17 MBP and an iPad. Because to me the 17 is still really light, pretty sure my Organic Chemistry Book is heavier... Especially with the sol'n Manual!
:p

My MBA 11" next to my MBP 17" ...

I really love the extra real estate on the 17. I feel like it's a canvas for me to fill vs the 13" is like "hurry up and finish doing what you need done"

Thats a big computer. if i didnt have a desktop or any other laptop I'd go 17". However the 15" high res screen is plenty for me. Loaded up and fast...17" laptops just look too big.

Honestly, looking at that picture, the 17" looks a little awkward with the huge empty sides too, compared to the nicely filled 13" and 15".

the empty sides are actually pretty nice built in speakers.

If I understand correctly, the 17" has the same speakers as the 15"? Even with the speakers, which fill up the 15" side nicely, the 17" just looks a little "empty" over all in that area.

Those are interesting pictures.

On the face of it, 17" sounds to be about four inches longer than 13", but the overall area difference in both displays is tremendous as your picture in the first post shows.

I think the 17" MBP is a professional level desktop replacement computer. The 13" MBP, while it share a similar name, is neither a desktop replacement nor a professional machine.

At best the 13" inch MBP is a very, very high end, sleek, sexy consumer laptop. And while it's the best consumer laptop on the market, and perhaps most expensive "entry level" laptop sporting just the standard Core 2 Duo and modest RAM and modest hard drive, it's an amazing machine on many levels.

That being said, it's not in the same league as the 17" inch MBP.

For my purposes, and budget, if my next Mac is to be a laptop, the 13" inch MBP is just perfect for me since I won't be a heavy filmmaker or hardcore gamer. It's still a little more machine than I need, but that will ensure more longevity. :)

but i like the 17" because its a fully portable laptop, not something i need to plug into another monitor. I could have 17 inches of screen where ever i want

I'm thinking of getting a macbook pro mainly to take with me traveling and to bring for classes.

The 17" pro is a beauty, but I already have the 27" i7 imac so the big screen pro would be useless for me. 13 would is probably the most suitable for me.

I used to carry the 17" MBP to work and travel with it internationally quite a bit when I needed the screen real estate. It wasn't that big of a deal; the machine is really only 1 lb heavier than the 15" MBP. The MBA is obviously much easier to travel with and I can use the iPad as a second screen through AirDisplay. It works allright if I need to look at documents side by side.

I just got my classic MBP in and first thing I thought when I pulled it out of the box was that it was lighter than I thought it would be. Surprising. This is me comparing it to my unibody macbook pro 15". The screen real estate is really nice though! It is so roomy on this computer and I really missed the keyboard!

Nice thread. I'm now more than ever convinced that 17" MBP is just right for me. I just love it's screen!

Love this thread. I've had a 15" for ~2 years and pretty much from the start regretted not getting the 17" -- much higher resolution, additional USB port, etc. Now with Sandy Bridge it turns out the 17" has the thermal headroom to let the same processor run faster than when it's in the 15".

I hope to have my 2011 17" in the next few days. With its display, I think I'll finally be free of the external monitor at work. Looking forward to it being ~3x faster than my current MBP too. :)

Yeah I remember looking at the 17" and the 13" at Best Buy. There's a world of difference in those 4".

If I understand correctly, the 17" has the same speakers as the 15"? Even with the speakers, which fill up the 15" side nicely, the 17" just looks a little "empty" over all in that area.

The 17" actually has 2 left, 2 right and one subwoofer. While the others have 1 left/1 right/1 woofer.

There's a dramatic difference between the sound stage from the 17" and the 15". I've been without my 2.1 speaker set for about a week and my 17" MBP speakers are more than adequate while I wait to get my 2.1 set back.
