8. Have a current fetish for Innocent smoothies -- in fact, I'm drinking one now as I type -- strawberry & banana.
Those were all I drank while on my trip through the UK. I swear they're so addictive. I'm so unhappy those aren't available back home in California, no matter the price for one (£2?! haha...well i think they were around £2). I did bring home around 5 or 6 bottles, as much as I can cram into my carryon..

Here are my 20.
1. I enjoy listening to bad pop music with the exception of Britney Spears. I do listen to more tasteful music though, like death cab or elliott smith.
2. I have this completely unbelievable addiction to Lush and all their yummy handmade stuff.
3. I have an unbearable caffeine addiction, although in small quantities does absolutely nothing.
4. On top of #3, occasionally I can't stop drinking starbucks doubleshots or other drinks with mucho caffeine until I start feeling really sick.
5. One of the two reasons why I like OS X is because of Darwin and all the other geeky aspects of the OS, including Cocoa and Objective-C.
6. The other reason is the plethora of good Mac-only applications like FCP, SubEthaEdit and Pages.
7. I've had 4 iPods since late November 2002.
8. I might seem happy on the outside, but I'm really clinically depressed with some suicidal tendencies.
9. Girls turn me on more than guys do. Not to say that I don't like my boyfriend or something, but..
10. I have a first degree black belt in taekwondo which I frankly don't really care for.
11. My spatial reasoning ability is insanely good, despite my gender. You know, that ability that's apparently so important for engineers because it shows how well you can visualize and manipulate objects or something along those lines. I don't know how to describe it.
12. My school sucks, despite what everyone thinks, because of the one requirement you need to meet to get in - have an IQ over 150. It sucks mainly because IQ is full of bs.
13. I'm ambivalent about being an op in the #macrumors IRC channel. It has its good sides and its bad sides, but it's yet another reason for me to spend less time there.
14. The first Linux distros I installed were Debian and then Mandrake, back when Mandrake was new and Debian was pre-glibc based, iirc. Except I didn't have much success, because I didn't understand a lot of it. I just wanted to try it for ***** and giggles, and I must have been in elementary school, seeing as how this was all before 2000.
15. I have a tendency to bitch at and/or want to shoot people who tell me I have Parkinson's. A tremor is a tremor, and why you were even paying attention to my hands for more than a minute is beyond me.
16. I hate touristy photographs of me standing in front of tourist attractions. Unfortunately, those are all that my mom cares about.
17. I have tried weed before.
18. I am not a guy.
19. I like vniow.
20. I am.

tho I want to know how Gav managed to learn to swim in a single evening!

For years I'd never really bothered with swimming, which is funny considering I love the sea and my dad was an ace swimmer... but I'd never gotten round to learning how to do it, don't know why, just never did.

Back in '92 I think, myself and friends used to go to the local leisure pool after school on a Wednesday and Thursday and we had such a laugh on the water slides and wave pool that I decided that it'd be even more fun if I wasn't always on the verge of drowning every week (unbelievably, such was my total lack of regard for personal safety in the water, that none of my friends were aware that I couldn't swim).

So I decided that one day I'd go on my own, observe what people were doing and try it out for myself. I've never had problems with having my head underwater, holding my breath etc. so that wasn't an obstacle like it is to other non swimmers or so I'm led to believe.

Didn't take me long to figure out how to float, control my buoyancy and tread water and once I was confident with those, the actual 'propulsion' was easy, taught myself the crawl and the breast stroke the same evening and after that I just worked on refining my breathing technique.

It honestly took me an evening to figure it out, and I honestly found it that easy to put into practice.

I can't hula-hoop to save my life though, no matter how much I try. :(

****, i love boats and **** too, but I can't swim either.

I might need to learn someday. I bet I could learn fast, because I think the reason it takes people so long to learn to swim is because they learn young, if you learn when you're older - one can rationally think about what is happening.

Since I have a few moments while the kids are sleeping...

1. I hate vegetables. Always have, probably always will. Except for corn, which really doesn't count as a vegetable.

2. I almost died when I was 2 months old due to intestinal problems. The doctors had even told my parents to be prepared for it. I am now 35 with my own kids, so I can only imagine what that was like.

3. Even though I tend to be verbose in written word (as you can attest by many of my posts), I'm not all that talkative in "real life."

4. I am for some reason regarded as something of an expert in my field of work, and as such have spoken at numerous conferences and industry meetings. Of course, some of that is my ability to BS my way through things that I only know superficially...

5. I met my wife in a bar. We were both stinking drunk. That was 11 years ago, and we'll be married for 9 years this March.

6. Speaking of drinking, my favorite alcoholic beverage is LaChouffe, from Belgium.

7. I was high school valedictorian. Whoop-dee-doo.

8. Perhaps because of #7, I was a virgin until I was 19.

9. I've never used illegal drugs.

10. I've never paid much attention to my heritage. I've got a lot of European blood in me, as do most Americans, but at this point, I'm not sure what it means. Will out grandchildren be talking about being "1/2 American"? I don't think so.

11. I used to do readings in church in high school. Now I'm conflicted about exposing my children to organized religion because I can't stand it.

12. I used to speak fluent French, after studying it for 8 years. I can now say "bon jour" and "au revoir" without wondering if I know what I'm saying. Sad.

13. Despite the consequences, I've had relationships with 3 people with whom I've worked over the years (not since I've been with my wife, of course).

14. This is the only non-work forum in which I actively participate.

15. I love to exercise. I run, bike, and lift weights. So does my wife.

16. I have only a handful of close friends.

17. I've been skydiving.

18. I never envisioned myself being a parent. Even after I got married, I was secretly happy it was difficult for my wife to get pregnant. We now have two kids and I can't imagine what the hell I was thinking - there's nothing better than being a parent.

19. I tend to be an aggressive driver. Don't cut me off ;)

20. had a hard time forgiving my parents for forcing me to skip a New Year's Eve party in high school to go to church. It was the low point of a primarily wasted social life at the hands of my parents. Luckily, I broke out of the cycle senior year when I started <gasp> dating.

12. I love white meat like chicken, turkey, and fish, but can't stand beef or pork.

1. I don't like people defining themself being of some nation(ality) if they don't speak that language, have themself ever lived and worked in that country, and have an option for the passport for the country they claim they are "from". 1. I don't like people defining themself being of some nation(ality) if they don't speak that language, have themself ever lived and worked in that country, and have an option for the passport for the country they claim they are "from". So if you claim you are e.g. Swedish, Korean, Irish, and Polish, and you were born in USA, and you don't own Swedish, Korean, Irish and Polish passports, and you don't speak Swedish, Korean, Irish (Gaelic), and Polish, and have never lived or worked in Sweden, Korea, Ireland, and in Poland, I am sorry you are ONLY an American to me.

I'm not quite sure why you feel that way. I think people should be proud of their heritage. I'm not american, my ancestors are not from here. I'm just an immigrant in a foreign land. And I could have UK citizenship if they just weren't so picky about only one generation born abroad (see my thread on dual citizenship). But then again, would you say if I move to Italy and become a citizen there, am I now Italian, even though I have no Italian ancestors?

I feel almost arrogant posting, I don't really have enough presence on this board to feel "relevant" to the local culture. Actually, I am arrogant come to think of it. ;) So here goes:

Some really interesting stuff folks... ;)

No serial killers though... interesting. :p

Careful what you ask for...

1) I've known several people who died (or worse) under extraordinary circumstances:

A close friend committed suicide by threatening police and forcing them to shoot him. The theory as to why he would not do this himself revolves around the fact that he was catholic. I guess he thought there was some suicide loophole in catholic law (I know nothing more about it, apologies to any catholics who know otherwise).

A friend from high school disappeared a short while after I bumped into him at the university we both attended. His body was found years later, and it wasn't until he appeared in the newspaper that I discovered he was a homosexual. The running theory is that he was targetted for that reason.

An aquaintence who I hadn't seen in a year or so appeared in the national newspapers; he burned synagogues and murdered homosexuals. He seemed eccentric but harmless at the time I knew him, though we were not "friends" he was over at my house and I at his from time to time. He eventually hung himself in prison. (There was also speculation that this guy killed my other friend; the case isn't solved last I checked).

Sorry for the morbidity; the rest is more cheerful, I promise!

2) Though I do seem to have a knack for attracting "eccentric" people. I've known at least 4 people who were members of religious cults that made "saving" me their personal project. A simple "no thank you" was far from sufficient. That's just the beginning; I've got more than 20 items of "crazy people" stories alone, but I don't talk about many of them.

3) I don't have a favorite color, but I like to keep orange around. (Perhaps it helps me find the happy place?)

4) I've practiced judo for many years. I still suck at it though.

5) My favorite drink (based on volume) is "Stash Double Bergamot Earl Grey Black Tea". It's good with chocolate.

6) My favorite foods are fish and chocolate. Strangely, I did not realize this until age 28; I was on an Alaskan ocean cruise and the impeccably attentive head waiter pointed out that I always order fish, chocolate, or both.

7) I'm more flamboyant and outgoing than your typical engineer; I'm more nerdy and bookish than your typical anyone else.

8) I don't like intelligence quotients. Perhaps it's because I can't quite hear the difference between "IQ" and "penis length".

9) This one is actually posted somewhere on this board, but I felt it was apropos for this crowd: The first computer I ever laid eyes on was an Apple II something or other. I was in 3rd grade. I begged and pleaded for an apple under the christmas tree but got a TRS80 because Apple was too expensive (not complaining). I spent the next 20+ years wanting an Apple, but buying other computers for various reasons. I'm still saving up for my first Apple, a 15" powerbook (2.5 more weeks!!!)

10) I started programming in 3rd grade, because there was no permanent storage on my first computer. Any program I wanted to use had to be typed in first; I had a college ruled notebook full of software for quite some time before I got my first storage device, a printer. :) Still years later I got a floppy disk drive, which of course facilitated retrieval as well.

11) I can't remember what it is like to not know how write software. It feels as natural as speaking, or writing an essay (or posting on macrumors). Same for math; I taught myself algebra in 4th grade as part of a personal programming project. I didn't realize that it was algebra until 7th grade when I took the class (got an A ;) ).

12) Every english teacher I ever had seemed to genuinely dislike me, except my last one in college. That was the only english class that I got an A in; the whole class was based on one massive paper we had been discussing all year; I wrote it the night before it was due. I swear I am not making this up.

13) Virgo.

14) Interestingly, like a previous poster I was also trained by a navy seal; my training was in target practice though. But I don't want to own a gun (see #2), so I'm probably not going to improve at it. Maybe I should get him to train me in SCUBA....

15) I love pressed coffee (as opposed to percolated/filtered). I roast and grind my own beans* in a frying pan on the weekends and boil the grounds to create really good coffee, better than I can buy anywhere around here except the Ethiopian restaurant.

* OK, my wife does it; but she's the nurturing sort. And I'm not a morning person.

16) I have an extremely underdeveloped creative side that I long to exploit. Particularly drawing and other visual arts. I'm just beginning to dabble in photography, but I have no time for it.

17) I'm a serious user and proponent of open source and libre software; I think #10 is a major contributing factor to this mindset.

18) I'm not an atheist or a Christian. Agnostic isn't far off, but that isn't quite right either.

19) I've always wanted to act. I took a theater class in college and loved it, even performing a few scenes of Shakespeare in public. My father was utterly surprised when I mentioned my aspirations recently, in spite of the number of times he sternly told me to "stop being so dramatic" while I was growing up.

20) When I watch "that 70s show" it's like replaying my childhood. I was Eric, My dad is still Red, my mom is still Kitty. Seriously, I'm sure that this is not an uncommon experience but it's utterly unbelievable the resemblance...especially between my dad and Red.

Wow, sorry mine was so long. :(

I agree! I was born in the US and think of myself as "American." But being part of another ethnicity, I don't think mainstream America will automatically think of me as "American." I take pride in being Chinese and American, and I'm comfortable with it.

When I went to Europe for vacation, people were friendly in greeting me ... in Japanese, Korean, and Chinese. Only did they guess American as a last resort even though I kept on responding in English.

I think we should not be afraid of talking about our own and asking about other people's ancestry, race, nationality, ethnicity, etc. If you go to any other foreign country, many people identify themselves that way and there's nothing wrong with it. I think it actually makes a more interesting conversation.
