The 20 random things you may not have known about me... thread.

1. I like ravens.
2. I'm a sort of a goth in the way I dress - I tend to dress all in black.
3. I'm a philosophy major. I love philosophy.
4. I'm an atheist.
5. I hate organized religion.
6. I hate OS 9. And all the Apple OSes before OS X. Yuck.
7. <- my favorite number.
8. I'm known to carry a deck of cards in my pockets. I like to play various solitaire/patience games, and know countless multiplayer games. Much better than a Game Boy Advance - I mean unlimited battery life! :D
9. I never listen to music.
10. And yet I want an iPod shuffle. Damn you, Apple.
11. On women, I think the modern mass-market idea of "chivalry" is BS. All the talk of being treated equal, they still expect to be treated like delicate things that men are obligated to protect? Nah, I treat them as they wished to be treated - as equals. I look at them straight in the eye, and expect them to do the same to me. Maybe that's why I have so many girl friends, but no girlfriend. ;)
12. I love cookie dough. You know those tubes of cookie doubh that you cut up and bake to make cookies? I don't cook them - I eat the tube raw. Yeah I run the risk of getting sick, but it's sooo delicious...
13. I frequent MacRumors way too much. The first time I got so drunk I could barely walk, the first thing I did when I got back to the dorm is post on MacRumors.
14. I'm 5'11", 125 lbs. I couldn't gain or lose weight either, despite my diet.
15. I have no preferences in women - all of 'em can be hot in their own way. I do have a small obsession over asian women though...
16. I do not like chubby chicks. The idea of seeing them naked sickens me. (no offense to the chubbies out there, guess I'm just not for you :D)
17. I love video games since the first time I've ever seen one - I remember the moment very lucidly, I was 6 when I first saw Super Mario Bros. on the NES at a friend's house. The revelation that I actually control what's happening on the screen with the controller I'm holding, well that's it for me, I'm hooked ever since.
18. I read way too much fantasy books. Reading Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever now.
19. I'm really good at almost everything I do, but exceptional in none.
20. I'm really dragging this list out to make number 20.

And I could have UK citizenship if they just weren't so picky about only one generation born abroad (see my thread on dual citizenship). By the standard definition most of the Americans I know define themselves as whatever their ancestries were. Only, so none of them here seems to define themselves as Americans. Too simple? If you have have had a grand-grand something that was from Poland, could you explain exactly how would that make YOU Polish, if you were born in USA, and you don't even know what's the currency in Poland?

If you go back enough the time ... some countries did not exist. There was not such a thing as Italy before 1870. And go back enough in time a few thousands of years, and you'd see things such as Elymni, Sicani, or be talking about Romans, Greeks, then Arabs.. as part of Arab culture, which was just North Africa. So go back in the history of a simple Italian person born in Italy, and he'd end up having had ancestors a few thousands of years ago from Arabs, Greeks, Normans, Romans, Venetians. No one there goes defining themselves as such. Or take for example a Finnish person. Technically, if he'd be genetically a result of people who have lived aroudn those parts of the world for the past centuries, still .. his grand-grand-grand parents could possibly NOT have been Finnish, since there was no such state before 1917 or something like that. So his grand-grand-grand something in that case would by force have had to be by their nationality Swedish or Russian or something. Or Estonia, as far as I know even that was "invented" in the early 20th century, was then absorpted by Soviet Union until its collapse... so, the grand-grand-grand something of the 'pure-blooded' Estonians would have again had to be Russians, Polish or something else that existed by that time.

If you "become" an owner of some state (passport, nationality etc), you are that and that's it. Or be whatever you feel like.

I am pretty much tired about the national stereotypies, so any time I see people who don't know me and "have to" know some national "stamps" to "understand" me, I pretty much go to a blank face mode. I was "split", learned to do the things on two ways, two incompatible ways, so I had to figure out how I want to do anything, so you very very rarely hear me ask anyone abput their nationalities. A nationality tends to tell of a single person's habits about as much as knowing their horoscope does.

That is true, and there are also areas like Alsace which is currently in France, but was in Germany when my ancestors left there. And I have also looked at the if you go far enough back thing... but I don't think going back 3 generations is too much of a stretch. :)

I guess I look at things in the way that there are customs and traditions that have been pasted down in a family. For instance my family celebrates a more British Christmas. I never realised this until I spent Christmas with my girlfriend's family which is Italian. So what if I don't speak with an accent? So what if I don't have a passport? It is the customs of these places which has been emeded in me through my parents.

The funny thing is that I used to not care at all about that and just though, "whatever, I'm American". I think I get that a lot from my grandma who immigrated here from Scotland. She has the mentality that America is so great and saved her family, yet she lost her brother in WWII (I know that's rather off topic). But back to what I was saying, I at some point came to the realisation that I enjoy seeing things my family does that is Scottish, Irish, German, or English. It's a part of who I am, and I feel I am a part of all those nationalities.

Hmm, lets see.
1. I'm 37 years old
2. I'm 6'1, and weigh nearly 300 pounds
3. 7 years ago, I weighed less than 200 pounds. After the birth of our second child, I gained all the weight. My wife gained maybe 10 pounds.
4. My favorite music is '80's hair bands (Poison, Ratt, Dokken, etc.)
5. I hate computer programming. I took one class of COBAL (required), and that was it for me.
6. I enjoy working with Linux. I'm reformatting a box as I type.
7. I enjoy watching cartoons. I'm watching Teen Titans as I type
8. I have two boys.
9. I've been married over 13 years.
10. I work on computers for a living.
11. I LOVE to read. Constantly
12. I drive a typical family sedan. I used to own an Eagle Talon, but threw my back out, and had a hard time getting in and out of it. So I sold it.
13. I don't own a single Apple product. I did predict Apple coming out with a sub $500 machine a couple years ago, on these forums. I can't find the post, though.
14-20. I'm not so interesting that I have 20 items :D
 
1. I was adopted, so I do not know my heritage.

2. I ran 5 marathons (26 miles each) last year, and have run 9 total.

3. I prefer blondes.

4. I prefer those blondes be men. :eek:

5. I never graduated college, but I'm editor of a national boating publication and a well-published freelance writer.

6. I've personally spent over $6,000.00 on Macs in the last year. :eek:

7. I don't only dislike Windows, I HATE it.

8. I have 3 iPods.

9. I have a rambunctious tabby that sits in the window all day long.

10. I'm a nationally-published photographer.

11. I have degenerative discs disease and four slipped discs in my back.

12. I have a penchant for Merlots and Zinfandels.

13. I'm way too neat and organized for my own good.

15. I'm a little buzzed right now (see #12).

16. I just found out that by holding down ALT-CMD that you can hand scroll a Finder window.

17. I haven't told my significant other that I just bought another iPod.

18. I've photographed most of the East Coast from a Cessna in the last few months.

19. I take seven different prescription meds a day.

Some of these may already be known to those that have paid any amount of attention to my previous posts, hopefully I've been able to come up with enough new stuff........

1. US citizen, but graduated from high school in another country.
2. Got run over by a car at age 6.
3. But no broken bones until age 22.
4. It took a car accident that was described by one person as "nobody got out alive from this one".
5. Diagnosed with Cancer a month before my 40th birthday. That type of Cancer is common among men between the ages of 16 and 35.
6. I have an auxiliary spleen.
7. Retired from active service in the US Navy.
8. I have webbed toes. (I've heard that Ashton Kutcher does too, but his are only on one foot).
9. I quit smoking. (One form of Cancer has been enough for me, thank you very much)
10. I'm a pack rat.
11. I'm always willing to listen.
12. I'm a paronomasiac.
13. My first experience swimming, came while I was still wearing diapers. (It scared my mother. I had fallen into a lake.)
14. The first time I got to Oregon, it was by bicycle.
15. Dislike organized religion. Each tends to think the others are going to the "bad afterlife", for no other reason than that they don't believe in the same diety.
16. I donate blood as often as I can. I believe it's really the only way that a guy can give the "gift of life".
17. I enjoy swimming and bicycling, but dislike "exercising".
18. The only state the I haven't been on the ground in, is Alaska.
19. I've been in 20 different countries as well.
20. I speak a little bit of about 10 languages. The only one that I'm really fluent in is English.

I've been as honest as possible, and tried to verify a couple of things to make sure that they are accurate, for example I always thought I was half Irish, but a quick call actually confirmed I'm only 1/4 Irish. The same goes for 5, I think I was 14, but there is a possibility that it might have been 13 I'm not exactly sure but it was one of the those ages.

Anyway... as I spend a *cough* reasonable *cough* amount of time on MR, I thought it'd be interesting to reveal and discover a little more about the people on MR. :)

2. I have 10 G.C.S.E's (English Secondary/High School qualifications)

5. I couldn't swim till I was 14, I taught myself one evening after school.
6. I could drive at 13 (manual transmission)
7. I absolutely hate seafood.
8. I once had my foreskin pierced.
9. This Gentleman prefers brunettes.
10. I have never measured the length of my errr manhood.
11. I used to race mountain bikes competitively in the under 18 category.
12. Even though I'm an Atheist, and don't believe in God, Heaven, Afterlife etc. I do believe in Ghosts. But only as non-conscious, non-intelligent residual energies.
13. My absolute favourite colour is Red.
14. I dislike spiders.
15. I was in a band with 3 bass players in school through college, we only ever played parties, and were quite, quite bad.
16. I don't like reading fiction books. I prefer to read non-fiction, factual ones.
17. I have a visual colour deficiency in my left eye.
18. I have a fear of dentists.

3) i once took a 3D design course and a pre-press design class
4) i got into university on the strength of my sat score
5) i learned to swim before age 10 fairly well

1) I'm a quarter Mexican, a quarter Spanish, and a half Scottish, and I'm completely white skinned.
2) I have unusually small hands and feet for being a guy.

5) My first language was Spanish (which I'm now having a difficult time learning in school...).

Here goes nothing...

1. Lived at home until I was 23 then moved to Japan
2. Have lived in Japan for 14 years
3. Have been to at least one Apple Store in every country that has one, but only one t-shirt
4. Have been to 66% of Apple Stores in Japan (haven't been to Nagoya yet) and 100% of store in the UK
5. Can speak enough Japanese to get myself in trouble, but not enough to get out of trouble
6. Hate the time difference between Japan and USA/UK as i always read the forums too late/after they have died down and think it is too late to add post
7. I am gay and love Japanese guys...thus Japan as a country of choice
8. Am overweight but don't care as i am happy in my self
9. I am still a four finger typist (and thumb for the space bar), quite slow and make heaps of typing mistakes and don't really care (thank god for auto-correct and spell check)
10. (edit: changed this one) My golf score would make a good bowling score and my bowling score would make a good golf score, but enjoy playing bothe although not good at either
11. I have way too many DVD's - mostly the Director's Cut or special boxed editions.
12. I have 3 iPods - an original, a 3rd gen 30GB and a blue iPod mini. Will get an iPod shuffle when they are more readily available (Ginza Apple Store and re-sellers are always out when I visit....I guess I should order one). Also bought my boyfriend of 3 years a silver 'mini.
13. Have never drunk tea or coffee - hate the taste, including coffee liquor, tiramisu desserts, etc
14. #13 is not a caffeine thing as I drink way too much Pepsi. Diet-Pepsi Twist is my non alcoholic drink of choice.....
15. .....with vodka being my alcoholic drink of choice, and Malabu a close second.
16. not sure of my heritage, all I know is that I am white.....
17. .....except when i spend time in the sun, then I go red, peal and am white again...I really do not tan well, but love going to the beach
18. Work too many hours, but get a good salary at the end of the month so not overly unhappy about the work time (except teleconferences at 2.00 am b/c of the time differences b/w Japan and everywhere else civilized)

no but seriously that's really freaky. plus that we both post on mr :eek: :p
 
1) 100% Jewish, but my last name is Irish - thanks dad
2) I don't look Jewish, so people are always surprised when they find out
3) I love all animals, but cats have always had a special place in my heart
4) I love the sea and literally used to spend hours swimming in it
5) I prefer to swim in the ocean vs a swimming pool
6) I must be the only scuba diver who loves diving in the cold waters of CA
7) Much to my regret learnt Latin in high school
8) My favorite drink is strong hot tea - Brit style
9) I actually enjoyed my stint in the army
10) Never had to use my martial arts, even although I used to get into a lot of fights prior to taking it up at age 15

2. Dispite this i have the memmory retention of a sive with the mesh missing and an not dyslexic but cant spell
3. i wish i was blonde again (but because of my job im not allowed to die it)
4. my gadget/mac adiction has pushed me into sooooooo much debt
5. I have 8 s-grades (scotish equivelent to english gcse's) 3 grade 3's 4 grade 2's and a grade 1 (1= a/a* for all the gcse lot out t here)
6. i also have 3 highers maths english and technological studies.
7. I'm stuck in my job which im now overqualified for for another 4.5 years minimum
8. I have the atention span of a 2 year old with ADHD thats been given nothing but E no's for the last month, but cant be bothered being hyper.

11. i've always had bad knees
12. I Love my vauxhall astra, because its difrent from all the others, its lower, faster, and corners better, but I baught it new and havent tweeked anything on it apart from the stereo
13. i get fixed on one idea and have to follow it through including side thaughts that relate to it.
14. the only speed limits i find it easy to stick to are 20mph and 30 mph zones, 50, 60 and 70 just seem to slow.

17. i treat all macs like they were my own flesh and blood and cringe at people that type to hard on the keyboard or give them a tap on the side when they hang

I actualy look forward to going into a PC World store, tormenting the "highly trained to deliver the pest computer for your needs" staff, convincing people walking past and making comments about "thats expensive for being so slow" that NO its not slow and YOU DO want it, then going to the apple trained apple rep and talking about theis site
20 I have an unhealthy obsession with Dragonball Z and to a lesser extent Dragonball, and i think anyone who says dragonball GT was good deserves dragged out, hung drawn quartered and then shot for good measure, because IT SHOULD NEVER HAVE HAPPNED!
 
OK, let's see how many of these I can come up with/recycle from previous posts :rolleyes:

1. My dad's family is from Ireland, and we think mum's is from England.
2. I'm a Christian, and have been for my entire life.
3. I was kicked out of university.
4. My favourite colour is green, although some days I seem to prefer blue.
5. My eyes see slightly different colours.
6. I used to be quite shy, it's not as bad now but the shyness is still there.
7. I read a lot of fantasy books.
8. I have become more popular since getting a Mac :D
9. I went through my collection of ~550 CD-Rs a while back and was amazed at how few of them were pirated.
10. I started using the Internet back at Netscape 1.0 :eek:
11. I still live with my parents :eek: (I moved out when I was 18, ran out of money, then moved back in).
12. I don't like telephones, because of the way they make you drop whatever you're doing (because they always ring when you're doing something important).
13. Despite that, I think I've only ever switched my cellphone off once.
14. I got a hole in my head about 10 years ago, missing my right eye by less than a cm. The scar's still there.

1. I weigh 75 kilograms and am 191cms tall, making my BMI: 20.6
2. I live in a place in Australia so small and insignificant it isn't worth mentioning
3. I own a 12" rev C powerbook, but I write this on an 866mhz pentium 3
4. I have passed 17 units of my SACE, meaning I could get a 4/20 for all of my subjects this year and still get my certificate.
5. I also enjoy running, but never do it. I also enjoy Tennis
6. I am a devout atheiest, and I also hate organised religion.
7. I'm 17 years of age.
8. My IQ is 132
9. I'm lactose intolerant
10. Most people my age annoy the crap out of me.
11. Smilies and emoticons give me the shi*ts.
12. I never resort to violence.
13. I'm thinking of running for state parliament in the election next year.
14. I used to be able to type faster than I can now.

Don't know if I'll actually make it to twenty things, but here it goes :

1. I'm 4/4 Indian. Specifically, Telugu, from coastal Andhra.

(Just in case you don't have a clue where that is, all you need to know is: yes, your job did just get outsourced to Andhra, and your tech support guy's probably also there. :p )

2. I have no clue what a GCSE is, but I graduated high school June, 04.

3. I'm a sophomore in college, and a junior in my major: History (AP credits rock! :D )

4. Despite rocking the AP exams, I'm a cruddy student. I never really saw the point of organized schooling. I read and study for pleasure, and I hate requirements (maths!). I doubt I'd ever sent my kids to convential schools.

5. I came to the States in 1990.

6. Yet I only just got my Green Card. Yes, it took INS over a decade to get their act together.

7 I've lived in Maryland (Baltimore), California (Cupertino!), and now Massachusetts.

8 My parents used to love to travel, so we took road trips across the country

9 As a result, I've seen more of the country than most Americans have: the only states I haven't seen are in the mid-west.

10 I plan to take a roadtrip back to Cupertino sometime during college to see the midwest.

11 I taught myself to bike. My mom was busy taking care of my newborn brother at the time, and my dad was doing his PhD, so I just got on and started pedaling.

12 This gentleman (funny saying that, I can't believe I'm 18 already) has no color preference, but prefers looong hair to short.

13 I don't believe in absolutes, so I have no favorite color, or favorite anything.

14 I'm not religious, but I do believe in G-d. I believe organized religion is too often a tool of controlling people, yet I don't completely reject my religion (Hinduism)

15 I have no musical talent whatsoever. And I'm pretty tone-deaf, too.

16 I once dated an Irish Jew. Best six months of my life. I've never before or since done anything I consider to be as rebellious* (Indian/Hindu parents don't look kindly on things like dating).

17 * I have drank alcohol since coming to college, which is almost on par with my audacious dating episode junior year of high school.

18 [Edit: as of 10/06, I have managed to get very very drunk. Whiskey is powerful stuff…] I've never managed to get drunk, and regularly drink my friends under the table and remain completely sober at the end of the night.

19 I evaluated my sexuality when I got to college and decided that I'm def. het, but I just find most women annoying. :eek:

20 Although I've accrued some 2000 hours of volunteer service hours over the years, I've never had a paying job. See #6 :rolleyes:

Though, that's set to change next semester : I've been hired for the fall as an OIT (computer support) Mac specialist.

  11. Seem to be popular at work, despite obvious anti-establishment proclivities, I think it's got something to do with point 5 and that I am someone they can trust

  13. Owing to point 12, I consider myself an emotionally stunted moron
  14. I used to care a great deal about sport, but these days I really couldn't care less about it; there is far too much in the world to discover than worry about the superficial emptyness that your favourite team winning brings

  16. My most treasured possession is a jade dragon my lady brought back from China
  17. I support the dying arts, conversation being my favourite
  18. I accept my own hypocriticalness, and so I am quick to point out the hypocrisy in others
  19. Never done drugs, nor smoked, nor gambled; my only vice being alcohol, but even then it's not too excessive
  20. I find that walking to a different beat is the best rhythm for life

I've had American's tell me they're Irish on the account of their great grandfather being partial to a pint of Guinness! In that case I'm Irish through and through! ;) :p
