Stanley Cup Finals Game 3: PIT 3 - DET 2: brought to you by EDGE power shower cream

as i expected, the pens came out on all cylinders. detroit did look overwhelmed but thats the way the playoffs work. momentum shifts with each game, each play and each shot. strangely though, i don't think the wings fans are phased at all. mostly because detroit was still in it. it wasn't complete dominance by the penguins (although the media wants you to believe it was). several plays in the third would've evened the score from 2-2 and even to 3-3. the chances weren't capitalized and thats why the wings headed back to the wyndham hotel.

i decided to give it a look and watch the game on NBC in HD. i don't understand why the commentators have to yell all the time. or why there is a guy standing in between the benches. or why one of the reporters is standing in the bench interviewing the coach while they are on a powerplay. i also don't understand why EDGE power shaving gel tells me that i should shave with edge and inform me of the shots on goal. and then spin into a group of different EDGE power shaving gel bottles and fly at me on screen. makes you wonder why ratings are still higher for NBA conference finals... on espn...

anyways, i guess i could give the goat to NBC for changing from an HD 16:9 ratio to a 4:3 curtained aspect with the last minute and a half to go in the third period, but i decided to give that honor to the detroit media. who's competing newspaper banner headlines as you can see here, were the same. with different fonts. 3 cheers for sports journalists.

I think that the NHL needs to stick more days between games. I can still kind of remember game 3. Kind of.

Why couldn't they have had a game tonight? Who's playing again? The Lakers? Huh?

Thanks for killing our thread, NHL.
:D

Stanley Cup Finals Game 4: DET 2 - PIT 1

so the puck dropped at mellon arena at 8pm on May 31st. then Crosby scored two beautiful goals and the pens capped it off with a quick 3rd period goal by Adam Hall to make it 3-0. wait a second. that was a montage of the highlights from Game 3. but... why didn't they show the two goals that Franzen and Samuelsson scored? if it were a game highlight reel than how come there wasn't any footage of the wings scoring?

the canvas was set perfectly as Crosby and Co. took to the ice. the pens were ready to take this series back. Crosby was only waiting till the national audience was watching. a quick power play goal by Hossa! hmmm... that goal looked an awful lot like the waived goal by holmstrom in game one... then a Laser by Lidstrom to tie it up! wow! probably won't matter cause the pens are 11-0 when scoring first... then detroit was called for 5 penalties. 5. michel therrien was probably trembling from the fact that the game was finally going his way. the period ended with nothing really generating. then the 2nd period ended with nothing generating... or was it? then the third... a strange turnover by darren helm and a backhand by hudler! right place at the right time once again the wings get one in. then the defining moment of the game - the pens go on a 5 on 3 powerplay for 1:26. 3 pens at the net and a pass to crosby! and zetterberg calmly covers his man and holds him back. and before you knew it, the detroit red wings are up 3-1 in the stanley cup finals.

but it wasn't supposed to be this way was it? i mean didn't crosby get two goals in game 3? didn't that mean anything? i would say that based on the score the game was a very tight one. but detroit had possession for most of the 2nd and 3rd periods. and osgood really made a difference that night. of course - noone is saying that he stole that game. the game could've went either way. but the wings won without holmstrom. they won without scoring the first goal. but what stats will the pens hold on to now?

Pittsburgh is now 11-1 when scoring the first goal
Pittsburgh is now 9-1 at home

if pittsburgh has the most explosive scoring line in the league - how come they've only scored 4 goals in 4 games? questions need to be answered on monday. they are going to come out as desperate as dallas came out in game 4 - but will it matter this time? has this loss mentally affected the penguins?

so i give the goat of the game to sidney crosby. who gave some great hypocritical gems during the post game comments:

"He made a good play on me, got my stick," Crosby said. "I don't think he did anything out of the ordinary besides what any other guy would do on a 5-on-3."

zetterberg & datsyuk are up for the selke trophy this year. they aren't just 'any other guy'

"and they scored two tonight. We scored one. So I don't think they're running away with it. I don't think we're playing catchup either"

detroit is up 3-1 and pittsburgh has scored 4 goals. anything can happen on monday - but because of therriens constant whining and the NHLs' crosby gushing - the wing fans are going to let them have it. the spectators at the joe were already booing crosby whenever he touched the puck in game 2. they're also bitter that the pistons' were knocked out of the playoffs. the pens have a very very high hill to climb.

and they are going back into an arena where they haven't scored yet.

Holy snikes!!!!

Talbot saved the season (for now) for the Penguins. Scores with less than 35 seconds left in the game.

Sykora said he would score the winner, and did. Great game. 4-3 Pens in 3OT.

I called Red Wings in 6, so this series is still on track for that.....

I hope the next game goes into OT too, so I can make it home from work and still watch a good chunk of it.

i had a bad feeling when talbot got the tying goal. when the wings get way too many chances and osgood is barely active than they historically wind up losing (anaheim 2003) it was going too well for them and they weren't capitalizing on any of it.

synopsis when i get some sleep (if i can stop thinking about this nightmare)

C'mon Pens in Game 6 on Wednesday, make a real series out of it. Then anything could happen on Saturday.

wowsers

Hey folks,

I've been working like a madman so i haven't been here in a long time, but i've still been watching the games since les habitants exited.

the games have been great. last night was amazing and a reason why hockey is truly the best sport. none of this bullsh*t penalty kicks or any other crappy instituted rule to end games quicker.

this is why hockey is best - b/c a team was 35 seconds from winning the cup and the other team scores. awesome. Then, they go into OT again and again and 1 more time. Those guys were exhausted, but gave it their all for the game.

tell your coworkers and family to watch the next game. it should be interested b/c Pitts is the younger team so will that help them or will the veteran savvy Wings handle the loss well?

btw, if Zetterberg isn't the mvp, i don't know who should be (oh ya, it should be Fleury if the Pens win - reminds of Patrick Roy or Marty Brodeur!:)

Just over 7 hours to go. Can't wait. It was a bit disappointing to see the Pens take a 2-0 lead so early in game 5 knowing Detroit had so much time left and then to see what looked like the inevitable when late in the 3rd the Wings were up 3-2, but I suppose that was just some sort of foreshadowing for what the series would be after the game: 3-2. The tying goal and the 3 OTs really make tonight's game have a palpable anticipation and excitement that will just be awesome. Hopefully the game will not disappoint. Here's to hoping that there is a game on Saturday. Simply because a game 7 in hockey is as great as it gets, and a Cup Final game 7 is even better. The only icing that could go on top of that would be game 7 OT(s). I think I just drooled on my keyboard. ;)

I am not a hockey fan, but I have to admit this series has got me very intrigued.

Hence why the NHL is loving this series. They are really hoping this pulls in some average sports fans, and the casual hockey viewer deeper into the bowels of the NHL.

I will see you guys tomorrow, as I am going to eat dinner, play some roller hockey to get the game going, and I will be too happy to post later (hopefully)!

Go Penguins!!

Stanley Cup Finals Game 5: PIT 4 - DET 3 3OT

well i guess i won't give a synopsis on mondays game, seeing as how game 6 will begin in a few minutes. i can tell you the mood that has floated around the office and just the people around here in general. i live close to two bars, one a sports bar and one a great corner of the street bar; both were absolutely packed in watching the game. whenever someone would open the door i could hear the NBC broadcast from my apartment. people who had to leave before the game was over were yelling in the streets because of the joy of being so close to clinching the cup. then the OT goal was scored and suddenly it was so silent. so quiet.

around the office everyone just was so disappointed. my mom, who was at the game, told me that everyone there were not upset, nor were they surprised... but just heartbroken. its a weird feeling.

you couldn't blame it on osgood cause he played well, you couldn't blame it on the defense cause pittsburgh could barely carry over the blue line. you couldn't blame it on the offense because they were buzzing around fleury like flies on a piece of uncooked meat. the wings were definitely not out played but the winning goal wasn't a fluke. it wasn't luck. the wings' were not going to win that game.

i think everyone here could feel that the wings weren't going to win it when they were scored on with 30 seconds left. then the two weak goaltender interference penalties that they had to kill in the 2nd overtime. by the time that period ended, almost everyone felt that it wasn't going to happen. when the wings were called on the double minor - the only thing i could think of was 'wow... thats it. the wings are going to lose this now' and the only thing thats going through my head right now, is that the wings won't be able to win it tonight.

i hope i'm wrong.

Seconded. Way to go Wings.

Wings in 6.

'08 Pens = '83 Oilers? We'll have to wait and see over the next few years.

Great thread!!

Hossa almost tied it, what a great game and series.

The Pens will be back next year, you can count on that.

Great series. Amazing work by the Red Wings, and the Penguins showing huge promise for the future. What a young team!!

I'm in the Pittsburgh Marriott across from the Mellon Arena all week, and glad it's over. Last thing I needed was a bunch of drunks running up and down the halls "celebrating" all night. This place has been a zoo all evening.

Thanks to everyone that participated in this thread and the season thread. It has been a hell of a ride.

This thread will be used to talk about the draft and free agency. (The title will be changed).

Thanks again everyone!

Stanley Cup Finals Game 6: DET 3 - PIT 2

THE RED WINGS WIN THE STANLEY CUP!
THE RED WINGS WIN THE STANLEY CUP!
WooooHOOOOO!!!!

congrats to the pittsburgh penguins for keeping this series competitive and showing the league an inspiring team that can be followed and cheered for - as much as say, the new england patriots!? pittsburgh was a different lifetime for me and i'll always love the city and the team. not as much as the other original 6 but the pens always have a place in my heart.
The Pens will be back next year, you can count on that.
definitely. i can see the pens having a huge presence in the playoffs for years to come. as for the wings? in this NHL a team that plays like them rarely gets a chance at the finals because of the hunger from younger more aggressive teams. this year was the exception because the team played out of their minds all year.

i have to give the edge of these playoffs to chris osgood though. he might've been the difference maker this year. he was incredible all season but i think he wanted the cup more than anyone. in 1997 he was backup to mike vernon and in 1998, the wings were so determined to win, rallying around konstantinovs injury that anyone could've been in the net to win it.

i'm still watching the local coverage and interviews. i didn't get to see the wings win in washington in 98 - so its weird to watch them win on the road...
