The 2008 NHL Offseason Thread

NOT GOOD!! Malkin and Sykora skipped practice yesterday because of sickness! Today is a MUST win for the Pens, because if we lose today, then its back in Philly and they have all the momentum. I think we can lose the series if we lose today, so Malkin and Sykora have to be at their best :(

Good news is that Roberts seems to have overcome is small case of phenomena and may play this afternoon, so we'll see.

WOW, how about the west now? It is a lil crazy, I hope D* can continue pulling through!

Yeah the only thing i could think of was they were just playing with the flyers on our ice just because they wanted to finish us on home ice...cause that was freaking depressing.
 
Red Wings versus Penguins.

Not too shabby.

This has the potential smell of a classic series.

I haven't made up my mind yet of who I think will win. I'm leaning towards the Wings, but the Pens just seem unstoppable. I think I need another day or two to think a little......

I like this matchup!
 
The schedule is out.

4 days off. ridiculous.

Like last year, the NHL seems bent on stringing out the finals and starting them after too long a layoff. At least it's not a whole week. But c'mon. How bout Fri Sun Tues Fri Sun Wed Fri or better yet Thur Sat Mon Wed Fri Sun Tues/Wed. Even if it went 7, that could end the finals 3-4 days earlier. June 3rd or 4th is fine.
 
It's all about TV...more games on Saturday = more exposure.

The only one who's likely to be really happy about that schedule though is my wife, because it means she won't have to put up with me watching hockey until next Saturday :rolleyes:
 
Congrats to the Penguins and Red Wings. Let us hope this matchup will go the distance and in favor of the Penguins.

I'm not a big fan of the schedule myself. I do agree that Saturday = More exposure. But 4 days off is a bit much.

They need to pay attention to what the NBA does- it seems like there is constant bball playoffs being played. Have they ever had a 4-5 day layoff between series?

When they put this much time between series, they lose their hype momentum. Unless you're a Wings or Pens fan, it's easy to forget that the playoffs aren't over.

Ridiculous is an understatement; it is absolutely mental!

And if they were to look at their ratings, delaying broadcast until Saturday hardly seems to be much of a reason.

Look, the playoffs take too long already. Why extend it unnecessarily?

We're such bastardly fans.

Am I the only one that's glad that VS only has 2 games and the rest go to NBC?

Nope, I like that too. That way I get to see more games in HD.

I hope it's a good series....

Already we have controversy with Roberts being press boxed for game 1. I hope Therien knows what he's doing with that.

both do an "ok" job at there production.....
they both need to talent esp NBC - get rid of milbury! (and i'm not just saying that b/c i'm a ranger fan :p)

I think we all do. It should be pretty evenly matched. Emphasis on should.

If I'm not mistaken, isn't the production the same? Just graphic changes? The thing with NBC it's a national broadcast at least. Everyone and their mother can tune in to watch, unlike Versus.

Islander fans have been saying that for eternity. Alas though, I actually kinda find Milbury funny at times. Though he should have no say in how to run a franchise.
 
Stanley Cup Finals Game 1: DET 4 - PITT 0

wings played great but it was a whole lot of 'right place at the right time' moments. there has to be more consistency with offense - the wings won't get two unassisted goals after turn overs - or a short handed goal in every game.

osgood did play well but of course you can't expect him to have that much inactivity in every game. how much shots did he face in 2 and 3? under 10 right? i'm sure that'll change with game 2.

since i don't get versus in HD i've been watching on CBC in standard def. when the games move to NBC i may stay on CBC regardless of the extra pixels. there's something liberating about not hearing a commentator go into "NFL mode" and yell into the mic, not getting bombarded by gatorade and beer commercials, and watching low budget windsor car dealership spots :)
 
As a Pens fan, I am embarrassed :eek: That was the most pitiful game we have maybe played all season. Or, Detroit is THAT good...I wouldn't know since we never get to see them play here (stupid NHL schedule).

Congrats to the Wings, they really deserved it...they played solid defense and severely limited our chances.
