tallest.....are you REALLY sure you want to blow that kind of dough on a computer in this economy? you could buy quite a bit of GE stock whish is insanely low

something to think about, at least it would be for me lol

I was planning to buy a computer around now a little less than two years ago, and I'm not sitting on billions of dollars of toxic "assets" or have any debt whatsoever. I can't wait to buy a new computer to replace this )*#$&%*(&$*(%$(%^*&$^%&*^#%(#&$)&*#(*%^ G4.

Supercomputer in a dual-slot GPU box. Check out nVidia's page on them.

I'm getting the Gainestown 2.93 with the 4870. This is what I know so far.

Yes, there is a 4870 for the 2008 Mac Pro. It requires 10.5.7, which doesn't exist yet. It should be a standalone upgrade in the Online Apple Store.

The Gainestown 2.93GHz you mention that your getting is the 8-Core or Single Quad-Core?

Eight core, yep. Eight core 2.93 and Radeon 4870.

I'm teetering between the standard RAM and the kick up to eight. If I get eight, I free up two DIMM slots... And Apple's RAM will be competitively priced this week, so now is the only time to buy...

Worth the wait?

So everybody was it worth the wait?

Was it worth all the time invested talking about Nehalem models on these forums?

Are you satisfied?

Man this bad economy crap is way to sell newspapers and get higher ratings on the news.

It's also a good excuse for companies to layoff high paid workers.

If you believe the FUD about the bad economy, you are cattle.

I'm going to link my question here because I'd very much like to know the answer. I didn't want to have to make a new thread just to ask that...

You could get TWO of the 2.8GHz Penryns for that - twice the processing power vs. the 2.93's ~1.5x over the 2.8 Penryn.

Oh, the processors are as much more powerful as predicted.

We just got backhanded by the pricing (and therefore, power/price ratio.)

So...no, not really.

What if they can afford it? LE GASP!

I laughed out loud. Good lord that was perfect.

Tallest, what do you need this thing for? I would like to get an 8 core 2.66, but frankly the mark up for the processors is a bigger rip off than I can stomach. I don't think I would buy a $5,000+ computer even if it was a good value, but no matter how I look at it this computer simply is not worth the money they're asking.

It's not the 1930's and not everybody is poor.

True... it's more like 1925. Just before the grapes of wrath... Only this time it's going to be MUCH worse. Back then was depression mixed with rapidly falling prices. This will be a harder depression mixed with rapidly rising prices.

In about 2 years time bread will be $10 or $15 for a short loaf and unemployment will be around 40%.

Make your own bread.

so a MP will cost $25K? (bread goes for $2 here haha, assuming a 5x increase)

So how many loaves of bread could I get if I sold my 8-Core 2.8ghz Mac Pro?

I have been thinking about making grilled cheese.

Unemployment has already recently gone from about 4% national average to about 9% as the national average. And that's just since December.

Here it comes kiddies... Hang on to your shorts.

So give or take, how many grilled cheese sandwiches are we talking?

well depends how you like it.. if you have 1 toasted cheese made up of 2 slices, then clearly around 800 (give or take).

better be ham on those!! where do you live ill come round.

wait.... im an idiot never mind. my calculation is WAY off..

Nah, when it hits that price it wont be an inflationary cause - it'll be a shortage thing. So maybe all he gets is 16 loaves. :D And you'll have to pay 12 of those to stay out of the FEMA camps.

true that it will be.. i sure hope that it doesnt get that bad! i cant even afford petrol to get to uni let alone loaves of extra bread at super-inflated prices!
