They'll make a Unibody iPhone, with a matte screen, resulting in everybody rioting and wanting them to release a special glass glossy. You know, for the pros.

Will it be for sale immediately at the apple store or will it only be released with a contract and then brought out for sale individually later?

I just want copy or cut and paste which should be easy. I don't care about mms or video. I have a nice camera, so I don't even use the iPhone one unless it's just for fun because it's there.

A new camera is really what I'm waiting for. 5mp and video would be sick

Why do you need more MP? More mega pixels have nothing to do with better picture quality.

What's going to provide better picture quality is a higher quality sensor (not one with more mega pixels) as well as the most important component in a camera;

better lens

I'm sure glad you geniuses don't make the product decisions for companies like Canon and Nikon.

On a serious note, what I would actually want is a software update that allows me to take videos and make them "fit to screen". I know that you can currently double tap the screen and make it zoom in, but that is crap. I have some tv shows that are not widescreen so I get the black bars on the sides. If I zoom in, I loose some of the show. With widescreen movies, if you try to zoom in to get rid of the black bars at the top and bottom, it will zoom way to close and you miss so much. Windows media player and coreplayer for WM 6 do this, why not make the revolutionary phone do this- or is the iphone not so much revolutionary and more a coup.

I could see it now... "Introducing the latest coup in mobile telecommunications- the iPhone. Just like a stripper, it looks great until you actually get your hands on it and start tinkering under the hood"

iPhone still needs 3MP at least and
auto focus if possible....

Current iPhone takes good quality picture it will be able to take
even better one with auto focus.

So here's what I think:

In reference to the battery I think we'll see a non-user replaceable battery similar in design to the new 17" MBP battery.

I think there will be a small bump in the MP for the camera, I just hope it's got a good lens too. The current one isn't too bad. We might see an LED flash, though I doubt it.

32Gb is practically a given. I do remember seeing something on Macworld, I think, in reference to Broadcom; there was word that they developed a better 3G chip with 802.11N standard. I'm interested to see if that is true or not.

Since there is no cellular hardware to upgrade this year, the update will have to be to the other hardware.

They need a new 3G chip. Sick of quite a few iPhones in a 5 bar (3G & EDGE) area to have calls automatically go to Voicemail without ringing the phone.

No, you don't even need 3MP to get good quality. Most people making these statements fail to understand that all more mega pixels get you is the ability to print or view a very large size version of the image.

Do you realize that 1080P HDTV is only the equiv of 2MP? And this is something being blown up to wall size with great quality.

What will make the picture quality better is a higher quality, low noise sensor coupled to a decent lens.

Pixellation on a printed image shot at 2MP will be noticable on a 6 x 4 inch print. That is hardly "very large". You require about 3.5MP, and about 5MP for a decent 5 x 7 inch image.

Sound quality

I agree, a better camera would be a minimum requirement. But what about sound quality? It needs a better microphone and speaker. For us musicians, the quality of the microphone just isn't good enough. of course, pro tools/logic for iphone would be nice too ;)

Well, we'll have to agree to disagree. I have been doing digital photography for almost 10 years and have gotten excellent 4X6 prints with 1MP digital camera that look a hell of a lot better than anything the iPhone is capable of producing. I currently shoot with a Canon 40D which produces images that can be easily manipulated to be enlarged to poster size without any noticeable pixelation and we're still only talking about 10MP. Not to even mention that the number of people who would want to print anything larger than a post card print from a phone snapshot is miniscule. Apple would be far better off putting a quality lens in the thing coupled with a flash.

Why don't you take a look at this chart, then it would occur to you that a 2MP image has about 200dpi at 4X6, which is more than enough for full film print quality like you get from a photo lab.

You mean the middle of the summer.

You mean the middle of winter.

What's going to provide better picture quality is better lens

Agreed, a better lens would make a world of difference - although given how small the lens needs to be, I don't know how feasible this is.

Let's be honest...

So I'm in a predicament much like many other potential iPhone buyers...it is possibly nearing the end of the product cycle for the current iPhone but I have funds available to purchase the 16GB 3G. I have a feeling that a) a new generation will be released this summer or b) they will boost the memory up to 32GB, possibly delaying the release of a new generation for the short-term. One of those two scenarios is a certainty before summer is over. I would feel like a complete idiot if I spent $299 now, and 3-6 months later, a new generation or even a larger 3G was released at the same price. If a new generation were to be released, this is what I feel are the most important upgrades and improvements that should occur:
  1. Landscape text message entry
  2. Support for MMS
  3. Copy/Paste
  4. Better camera - HTC and Samsung are currently using 5.0MP, some with flash...
  5. Higher screen pixel resolution - see HTC Touch HD; doesn't need to be that high but an upgrade would be nice
  6. Better battery life
  7. Flash support
This is my dream list obviously. The issue is, I know all these things are do-able, so why won't Apple make it happen? Because they are stubborn. Same reason why a 15" MacBook only has 2 USB ports. Just doesn't make sense. I agree, the iPhone is and was a revolution. But I believe Apple has "played jazz" and now they just need to perfect the art they have produced. That's my 2 cents.

When I think about it, I am actually pretty happy with the current iphone - so any revision should only be a good thing. Other than video recording and possibly a longer battery life, I'm happy.

I didn't disagree with you that the iPhone's lens assembly, CMOS performance, low light sensitivity and absense of flash were anything less than crap, just that increasing the MP count would give no benefit whatsoever. It is true that pushing it beyond 5MP is useless - Sony have 7.2MP phone cameras now that would actually probably be improved by dropping down a bit, although the chips themselves are very impressive.

But pushing it up from 2MP would generate benefits for average users.

I currently shoot with a Canon 40D which produces images that can be easily manipulated to be enlarged to poster size without any noticeable pixelation and we're still only talking about 10MP.

Erm... we obviously have different definitions of poster, because I would suggest that would require a 24MP back for typical work where some level of reframing and resampling will inevitably be required.

Apple would be far better off putting a quality lens in the thing coupled with a flash.

Never said otherwise.

Err... 200dpi is nowhere near full film print quality from a typical high street print lab. You need 300dpi as a minimum, even assuming you're lucky enough to be able to print the shot with no digital aftereffects work at all.

Wifi syncing and i think its coming too

I really want wifi syncing, I can never be bothered to find the cables and plug in etc. and it looks like we should get it as well!

with the added advantage that it will do FM radio receive and transmit aswell! I can get rid of the itrip then.

iPhone HD?

I would like the next iPhone to put focus on the multimedia element of modern phones rather than the iPod and the Appstore.

I think the Apple badge itself would make an excellent hidden camera light/flash. Then at least a 5MP camera with a video mode.

Add these features and I think the iPhone's appeal would skyrocket. Camera phones are all the rage after all.

I would also like to see Wifi or Bluetooth iTunes syncing, MMS and voice dialing. Most of that is software though, so I guess it's not so relevant. Oh and while the SMS app is pretty, it's functions are terribly limited, so that needs an overhaul too!

Hmm, I think we might be more likely to see video recording over any real extension of Bluetooth.

Would the iPhone have a xenon Flash? Put another way - would Ives allow one, and if so, how would he do it...
