first toughts:
- vuvuzuelas are really annoying.
- mexico dominated the first half, south africa came out the second.
- giovanni dos santos could be one of the surprises of the tournament
- tie is fair.
- the offside goal was a clear offside (for the reasons mentioned above) even if the incompetent announcers on espn kept saying it was a "clearly regular goal". might want to try read the rules first, buddy.
- france is even worse than i thought, hopefully they'll get better. it boggles the mind why they kept domenech for so long.
- hopefully we have already got the worse game of the games out of the way.
- mexico is leading the group over south africa (as per my office pool ;) )

France looked flat, they had more chances but Uruguay defended pretty well. Forlan could have won it with that half-chance volley. The sending off was pretty clear-cut. I agree that the French shirts looked nice.

Incidentally, it seemed like there were an awful lot of wayward shots and free-kicks...perhaps that Jabulani ball is just a bit too lively?

I watched the game in Anchorage's only (self-styled) "Irish Pub", which was cringingly tasteless...at least they didn't have a big leprechaun somewhere - oh wait, they do. There was also a lot of Scottish paraphenaila, leading me to belive the owners are confused between the Scotch and Irish. And even though they advertised televising the world cup here, I was the only person there watching the game.

Lloris nearly got done by the bounce.

That pub will be a depressing place after tomorrow's third game.:)

Cheers,
OW

I'm a little late with my post-match commentary...agree with most of the previous posters...Mexico dominated that first half and should've scored 2...yes the Vuvuzelas are superbly annoying...

Uruguay vs France was a tactical battle...France started strong but I barely saw Ribbery after the initial 20-25 min...Uruguay is very organized in the back...

The next game Mexico vs France will be a do or die affair...

My Day 2 Predictions:

Korea 1 - Greece 0
Argentina 2 - Nigeria 1
England 1 - USA 1

Cheers.

I didn't get to hear the vuvuzelas, the "Irish" pub I was watching the game in refused to turn off the country music they were playing. Not sure which is less evil to my ears.

I'm trying a different venue tomorrow for the USA game. I hope there are at least a few football fans in it.

My Day 2 Predictions:

Korea 1 - Greece 0
Argentina 2 - Nigeria 1
England 1 - USA 1

my guesses are
Korea vs Greece: 2-0 .. greece simply is too weak on the offense
Argentina vs Nigeria 3-1 .. with that last goal being a counter goal very late while nigeria pushing for the equalizer
England vs USA 1-0 .. england stumpling around clueless.. game features at least 1 red card

on vuvuzelas ... one gets used to them if the broadcaster hasn't turned up the volume too much from the playing field

I'm too cowardly to predict the USA-England game. I just want to see a good performance from our boys.

What are the chances of us seeing a Peter Crouch robot dance again? :D

I think we only see the Crouch robot if he scores in a final, or something like that.

That France / Uruguay match was pretty rough watching. Uruguay defended very well, certainly, but France just lacked that creative spark. Gourcuff was very disappointing. Govou was a total waste of space. They've got a lot of talented players but the pieces don't seem to fit. I can see Laurent Blanc accelerating the youth movement when he takes over, which is sorely needed.

Not sure what to expect out of England / USA. I will certainly feel very divided watching the match, but I hope it's a good one. I'm feeling 2-0 England right now (Rooney header, Lampard penalty).

We'll see if I can wake up early enough to watch the Argentina / Nigeria match.

I agree about France - lots of talent, but a squad that appears to be considerably less than the sum of its parts.

Here in Alaska, WC game times are either 3:30am, 6:30am or 10:30am. Fortunately, the USA-England match is a 10:30 match.

USA can go toe-to-toe with England in terms of physicality and fitness, I'm less worried about succumbing to longballs than an incisive counterattack feeding Rooney or losing the midfield battle. Donovan is being employed on the wing, and I'm not sure how solid Ricardo Clark is right now, so Michael Bradley is going to have his hands full trying to deal with Lampard and Gerrard. Despite using two holding midfielders, I worry that our back four need more protection. Donovan and Dempsey are going to need to run their asses off. Gooch is not fully match fit either, we really need him in his Confederations Cup '09 form.

Toda's predictions

South Korea 0 - 0 Greece
Argentina 2 - 1 Nigeria
England 1 - 1 USA (USA to score first, scrappy England goal in the last 5 minutes)

Obviously I'm most looking forward to the last game, but the middle one really interests me what with the 'El Diego Unpredictability Factor'.

2-0 to South Korea against Greece and it could have been more. Great finish by Park Ji-Sung for the second. SK look good, but then I think a lot of that is to how poor Greece seem to be.

Is Korea that good? or is Greece that bad? I had voted for Slovenia for worst team in the WC but the Greeks might take it just like in their only world cup 1994 USA...

Congrats to the previous poster who predicted the 2-0.

Does anyone see in the next game a Nigerian defender chopping down Messi?

Korea Republic aren't that good. They play a chaotic attacking style that suits their speed and conditioning advantage, which confuses lesser teams and makes the Koreans' opponent's look bad.

Case in point:

2-0 to South Korea against Greece and it could have been more.

"Could have been," being the key. Korea's always taking wild ass shots. If you look at their goals scored versus shot, it's pretty dismal and on the low end of national teams.

When Korea win, it's usually less about skill, talent and tight, disciplined strategy and more about making their opponents fall apart. The confusion and discord strategy doesn't work against more disciplined teams.

I'm pumped for the match against England. My wife and I spent the last two weeks in Europe, and were impressed with the buzz about the World Cup. So we figured we'd stop being typical Americans and see what the fuss is about.

Oh, and SCREW YOU, England! :D

gee that didn't take long ... i already thought that they are giving argentina way way too much room for attacking and now it happened at a corner

Messi looks on form. I hope he has a good World Cup. Watching him play football is mesmerising.

Actually, there were a couple of good saves from one-on-ones and some last ditch tackles in the box, so hardly 'wild ass shots'

Here's hoping that England United shoot some totally awesome strikes past the goaltender in the Soccerball World Series today. :)

Anyway, to the Yanks who are worried about the long ball, don't. Fabio has a way of getting our players to play down on the ground with plenty of build up play, that is what you should be worried about. Having said that I think this gamehere in the UK is being overhyped and it's all set up for a massive dissapointment for us. I think we will edge it though.

Hey man, let me have me thing against the one team I really care about this WC. This way, I'll be less disappointed when they eventually lose.

It's different if you're supporting a team that actually has a shot.

/glass half empty ;)
