Today's predictions:

Netherlands 1-0 Denmark
Japan 1-1 Cameroon
Italy 0 -1 Paraguay

So far my guesses have been so off beam, expect Denmark to win 8-0.

it has nothing to do with culture, it simply makes the show unfit to be watched on TV. maybe live is different.
i watch the games without audio on. it's not great, but at least it's bearable.

they should have the commentators in soundproof suites. or even have them in a studio so they ca comment without that horrible background.

holland looking good now.

these frickin' vuvuzuelas are completely ruining the world cup for me

The (current) lack of exciting games/goals has been worse (with the exception of last night). I've tuned out the horns, and whilst they are annoying, they're obviously important to the local fans, so let's leave them be.

Presumably all samba music should be banned from Brasil 2014?

Yep, they just made it 2-0. Another couple of quid for my beer fund :)

Edit: Music I don't mind, a constant loud drone I do.

I do see your point, but if they played a tune rather than just make a noise I don't think people would mind so much

completely irrelevant analogy.
again, this has zero to do with local culture.

it just makes the show unwatchable for me. maybe at the stadium it's great, but on tv it completely kills the atmosphere of the stadium, the reaction of the crowd, the silence when the tensions builds up, the cheers, the chants. everything that makes the game 'special' other than the plays themselves.

but if the loudspeakers at every game in 2014 were blasting Samba continuously, with no connection to the game, in a way that any communication, including the commentators words, were drowned out, then yes, that should be banned.

Here's a question for you though Fizzoid...

Which do you prefer; the constant drone of the vuvuzela or the constant first two bars of 'the self preservation society' by the Sheffield Wednesday/England band?
I'll take the vuvuzela every time:D

Ex Sheffield Wednesday band, they got banned (pun intended) from playing at Hillsborough due to the number of complaints

I'd still take the band though, just! :D

this has zero to do with local culture.

It has EVERYTHING to do with local culture! SA football fans like to blow a horn throughout the match when they watch. We've known about this for a long time. This world cup is in SA, so of course they're carry on!

Turns out Sepp Blatter agrees with me. I'm not sure if I'm happy about this or not...

For me too.
Because of those irritating horns, Dutch TV have turned down the sound. Therefore you can't hear the crowd at all.... and that makes watching these games strange.
No crowd noise, no referee's whistle, just a quiet game with normal commentator's sound.

Nothing beats the sound of singing fans. Not these über crappy vuvuzewhatevrzzz

Oh well.. we won. First goal was another howler.... but this time from a player.

What a tournament.

I suggest making some minor adjustments to their "culture". I can understand this horn-blowing during a SA game, but the rest of the world is getting a bit annoyed with this "culture".... it's a World Cup.

Another bore, RvP has a shocker, and the vuvuzelas could be used to wake the pundits. How many great games are there during a World Cup? Are we too excited at the beginning?

Cheers,
OW

No, this is the worst World Cup I have seen.... I wonder if those horns are also putting the players off..?

It must be so annoying when playing during a constant barrage of ugly noise. :(

It's hard not to be excited...but after Germany, this World Cup won't be as exciting...several theories are there...

1) Long Seasons, tired players
2) Long Seasons, players worried about their club careers more than ever
3) The environmental factors...noise? altitude?
4) Long Seasons, old players...a lot of players are carrying injuries...or are older veterans
5) The ball...yes it's an excuse every year but it's hard not to say the ball plays a factor when you see many long passes sail over players heads...

Anyone have more thoughts?

This is no different to past tournaments. And, some players like RvP have been out so long, they can't be tired... but he had a very bad match.
2) Long Seasons, players worried about their club careers more than ever
The large international tournaments are where players would love to shine! A lot of players not playing in huge matches like the CL see the WC as their chance to show the world what they can do.
I also feel that the honour of playing for your country and playing for literally billions of fans world wide should give a good reason to want to play well and go for it.
3) The environmental factors...noise? altitude?
Yep. Not the altitude though. That can be a factor later on the games, but not during the first half.
I do think the players are put off and maybe annoyed by the idiotic horns
4) Long Seasons, old players...a lot of players are carrying injuries...or are older veterans
I agree that the older players who have played most of the season can be worn out.
5) The ball...yes it's an excuse every year but it's hard not to say the ball plays a factor when you see many long passes sail over players heads...
Sure the ball has its issues....but the teams have trained with these balls for weeks now.
Anyone have more thoughts?

I also think that seeing many empty seats during a World Cup is strange... not that this fact should influence the players, mind.

Anyway... you must be glad! The Germans were the only team who managed to impress! :)

England defender Jamie Carragher said the noise did not bother him when he came on as a half-time substitute during the 1-1 draw with the United States and he said he had already bought two to take home to his children in Liverpool.

"When I came on I didn't notice it too much. I think you notice it more when you are watching on TV," he said.

"But my kids have been on the phone and asked for two so I'll have to take two home for them. I've got two in my bag already."

Remember, he's from Liverpool, he's used to distracting noises, such as burgular alarms and police sirens going off all the time ;)

He's probably more worried by his lack of pace.

cameroon-japan another snorefest. And I am not too optimistic about the italy-paraguay game as well (in terms of spectacular play, should be intense though)
might have to actually get some work done.

japan scores as i am typing this. against the grain, but should open the game up

Just one of the things he didn't notice - including defenders taking the ball past him.....

Hehehehe, brilliant! He'd have been better using vuvuzelas as an excuse for playing poorly, now people will just think he's crap ;)

Can't see King getting another game either, so do we stick with Carragher or try Upson or Dawson. Choices, choices
