It only looked like it did. My own close examination looks like Reid ony headed the back of the Italian defender's head:

I apologise for my error. I only looked at it from the one angle (the same angle as the ref was so I assume he would have seen it the same way). Other angles clearly show it came off Reid's head behind the Italian defender and so it was definitely an off-side goal.

Kaka red card = karma for Rivaldo in 2002?

Obviously not, and I hope it gets rescinded, but Ricky Kaka really hasn't looked at the races for the last 2 games...

Karma for part of the way they play; trying to get players sent off by rolling on the floor when they haven't been touched. At it again today, but Ivory Coast hit back. Glad Brazil had a player sent off and hope it isn't rescinded.

Cheers,

Wow, I leave the modern world behind for a week and look what happens!!!

Upsets everywhere! Slovenia and USA might progess at England's expense! French on strike (ok, no surprise there)!!! Swiss beat Spain!!! Terry calls out Fabio!! good grief, too much to absorb all at once!

Oh, and Brazil look like they'll win it again. Not really news, that. Maybe a Brazil-Argentina final?

On my (Kiwi) roommate's behalf, I'd like to congratulate the All-Whites for two great results in their group. I love to see the Italians drop points.

A good result for USA too, I feel like the Algeria game is winnable. The team will be in high spirits and ready for their final group match. Typical USA performance btw, go behind early and then stage a determined comeback. If we could only eliminate that "go behind early" part...since I'm half Slovenian, I have to say the 2-2 result was hardly something I can be unhappy with though. Well done to the Slovenians, they are having a good tournament and showing that beating Russia in qualifying was not a fluke.

Today's predictions (I was three for three results wise yesterday!)

Portugal 1-1 Korea DPR (Although a 5-3 as seen in 1966 would be a treat)
Chile 2-0 Switzerland
Spain 2-0 Honduras

I feel a bit sorry for North Korea, being drawn against the #1 and #3 ranked teams in the world and play them both first up.

So that lop-sided scoreline means Ivory Coast is all but eliminated as well? I calculate they now need to beat Nth Korea 9-0 or somesuch as well as needing Portugal to lose against Brazil.

Both of which are perfectly possible, except for one thing.... Sven Goran Eriksson.

CIV will go 1-0 up and Sven will get them to sit on the lead only to come unstuck and concede two in the second half:D

I have one, some guy called Fabregas. He must be pretty naff though, he hasn't played yet...

there is always the argentina-peru precedent from '78.
of course in this case we don't have a A Ivory Coast sanguinary military dictatorship running the event.

a few comments.

new zealand- italy: ugly game.
one off-side goal for a very dubious penalty, refereeing not at it s best (although both calls were understandable), but wasn'r helped by the players. And what's with all the elbowing?
once again it show that possession is way overrated if you don't have the talent to put it in.
fianally some good goalkeeping in the cup, an who is the zombie sporting italy's #5? surely it can't be the same cannavaro we saw in germany. maybe his brother?
fine display for the kiwi's who against all odds have an off chance to go through. certainly hope so.

as far as italy, i guess if you leave the best talent home, and then you don't play the best of the one you have with you, then you can't expect too much, right mr. lippi?
still on course to be the first team ever to win a world cup without winning any game in regulation time (possibly by rallying every game form 0-1 to 1-1).

brazil is brazil, and the score is legit, but the handball was there.
i am afraid ivory coast and most african teams were highly overestimated. america is ruling this cup.
most shameful moment' of the cup so far: keita's ridonkulous acting. he should have been carded instead of kaka (who was improving btw).

didn't see the paraguay and portugal games, unfortunately.

another referee that feels they need to be centerstage in chile-switzerland.
new zealand and switzerland the surprises of the cup so far.

oh and obout france::rolleyes:

Please have a moment of silence for the North Korea coach and team. They were a formidable team and adversary. Their death by gun squad upon return to North Korea will be mourned by the rest of the world. Long live the brave 2010 North Korea soccer team.

You missed a rare and unique WC game where the referee wasn't the focus of the match.

I think this guy in the Chile/Swiss match has been on camera in close-up more than any of the actual players. The best referee is one you don't notice, as they say.

One of them plays professionally in Japan. Not exactly iron-curtain gulag stuff.

For me the most shameful moments are when the officials fail to deal with the acting performed by the players of Italy and Brazil.

I doubt this, but if the squad could take out BBC commentator Mark Bright asap.

See, this is the ridiculous situation with card-happy refereeing. The players are now just trying to get him to brandish more of them. Can you really blame them?

i haven't seen much of that. i think other teams have been much more guilty of that so far.

Suazo, Sánchez, Fernández, Isla all having (or had) a pretty poor game today.
That makes it even harder to break the Swiss lock.

Btw, how sad it must be to be Swiss; their attempt to play soccer is just pathetic. They let their rivals play, and try to strike lucky with a counterattack.
If every team played like that, no one would follow this great sport.

EDIT - GOAL GOAL GOAL GOAL. Both games, a goal right after my post, I'll have to make it a habit.
And the poor goalkeeper couldn't break the record for time unbeaten. That's what happens when you don't play the game!

Looking forward to seeing the Swiss attack, and find out how the hell they managed to qualify for the cup. Honduras was way more fun to play against so far.
