Looking forward to the games this evening now! I wonder who we'll (Eng and US) will get in the next round?

Just seen highlights of the US/Algeria game, it looked like a cracker!

I was hopping to catch the US vs Algeria game on CBC but instead I had to settle for watching the other match (England vs Solvenia). Looks like I'll have to watch it On-Demand or something.

CBC streams all the match online in very good quality live and on demand. I watched both at the same time :)

Is it safe to say this is the greatest day in US soccer history? From crashing out of the first round to winning the group with one goal. Amazing!

The last time USA won their last game of match play was in 1950. The last time they won their group was 1930, in the first World Cup.

USA got 3rd place in the 1930 world cup if I remember correctly!
Kind of. There wasn't a play-off between the losing semi-finalists at this tournament (they were introduced in 1934, I believe). However, a FIFA document in the 1980s awarded third place to the US and this has become accepted, I don't know if it's due to the US having a better overall record than the fourth placed team or what...

Now that they've topped the group, if Australia can pull off a miracle it could be USA v Australia. I was always hoping it would be England v Australia though. England v Germany is definitely on the cards if Ghana/Germany draw (correction - if Germany win.) . So many possibilities, mathematically if not realistically, but I still have two hours to hope for 'anything can happen'. :)

Football, bloody hell!

Not sure about 1950, they lost to Spain and Chile, only beating a bunch of no hopers. Also, events you experience seem better.

Question! Will German fear of facing the formidable England team mean they will now settle for a draw against Ghana and so play the USA instead? :D

I found the Univision (Spanish) internet feed and shouted at the screen just as Donovan went to make his historic shot. Since it was before 8am I think I may have woken the neighbors.

Maybe this isn't USA's finest hour (yet), but it certainly ranks as one of the high points of US football, up there with our 1930 WC performance, 1950 vs England, making the quarterfinals in '02 and of course beating Spain and making the Confed Cup final.

We are a bit weak in attack, but our morale is sky-high, we are playing well as a team and showing great mental toughness. In addition, it's interesting to note that Bob Bradley, a coach few people rated (and many didn't even know) has turned out to be one of the most successful USA coaches ever, possibly even THE most successful.

Surely the greatest moment in US football history was beating England in 1950?

Admittedly it was overlooked at the time, but in retrospect, it was an incredible result.... England had an amazing team at that time.

I think the 1950 win is still great, but has less meaning as time goes on because (1) the win didn't propel the US team to greater things in that World Cup, or really at all because we didn't even qualify for another until 40 years later; and (2) no one in the US cared that we beat England at the time.

There was only one American journalist there to cover the event, and even he was there only because he happened to be in Brazil at the same time the World Cup was being played. Except for the players' family members, no one greeted the US team when they returned home. Although it's still considered one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history, over time it's come to look more and more like a fluke, and less like a watershed moment of any kind.

Thierry Henry has invited himself to the presidential palace to speak with Sarko after the World Cup. Getting a little to big for his britches, isn't he? Since when do people invite themselves to presidential meetings?

I think the USA v ALG game was probably the best so far of the world cup. High intensity game from both teams, and a nail biting conclusion.

USA attack seemed really strong today - Jozy was blazing past defenders all game and there were more shots than all their previous games combined. Algeria was playing well defensively too. If they can keep that intensity rolling into the next game, I don´t think anyone has a chance (blindly optimistic I know.)

Can't wait to see who the US and England will play. (BTW - congrats to ENG!)

What a great goal by Landon and another horrible call by the refs which disallowed another one. They need to get their act together. Now it's time to root for Germany.

If they settle for a draw and Serbia beats Australia, Germany's out.

A possible scenario though.

Very true, a draw for Germany is only good for them if Serbia doesn't win, so I assume they'll go out to play for a win from the start.

Ideally I'd like Ghana and Australia to both win 1-0, but if Germany is playing to win I hope they go all out for 4-0 (or 3-0?) so Australia only needs to beat Serbia 2-0 then. I think. Wishful thinking!

Australia's starting the match with 11 men... so far so good... :D

Edit - ugh, no, it's the Uruguayan referee that sent three players off in one game the last WC...
