This is our chance to avenge Ghana's knocking us out last time around. We are a better team than we were 4 years ago, and Ghana are arguably worse. Bring it!

England v Germany should be an interesting match. I'm going to break with tradition and suggest a 2-1 victory for Germany in regular time. England put in a better performance today, but they are still not playing to their potential and Germany have lots of goalscoaring talent.

We look good in red, although I prefer to see us with white shorts rather than the full kit being all sanguine.

Having had a bit of a look online, the 'home' team does indeed have first choice when it comes to which kit they'll sport – so whether we turn out in red this weekend is in the hands of the Germans.

Have a word, theITGuy – you want us to look our best, surely? :)

Well, in every game so far the 'home' team has worn their 'home' kit, so I think we can expect Germany in white with black shorts and England in Red with white shorts.

Adidas - surprised they don't mention Spidey Sense.

If only Ecuador and Ivan Kaviedes were in South Africa...

More than likely, although both teams can wear their away shirts if they want (and there's no clash of course), as happened when we met in Euro 2000.

I think I'm right in saying that we've worn red shirts more frequently than white when playing Germany over the years...

two days dayswith out internet an d massive amount of postings to read up... on germany vs england:
with england very likely being afraid of penalties i fear they will try to push up and make the game, which will end with them falling victim to germany's counter attacking

and oh boy it's sad that özil isn't in the same shape as he was 1 year ago.. yet again he missed an absolute sitter which he would have easily put into the nets.. one can only hope he can find his goal instinct again

I'm waiting with some trepidation to see how the British tabloids handle this. Are they going to go through yet another round tommy and fritz? 1966, the war, etc.

As for Özil, at least he got one in. I haven't seem much of him before the WC to be honest. He seems to be great player though. I'm excited to hear that Arsenal are (for the second year running I believe) going to try to sign him. Cesc may not be around much longer and Özil looks like a more than suitable replacement (with a bit of fine tuning).

Germany look strong - though I think Argentina, Brazil and Spain look better. I expect to see Germany in the semis though, and so I can't see England getting past them.

Germany and Argentina are in the same quarter of the bracket though so they can't both make the semis.

True. I envision an Argentina-Germany semi, and I think it will be close but I'll go with crazy Diego's boys. Here's my hopeful semifinals bracket:

USA v Spain (a rematch!)

Argentina v Brazil

With a Brazil - Spain final

I SMELL the 2018 FIFA WORLD CUP coming to the USA!!!:):)

I doubt it, we've already hosted several...but if we did get it I would want to drop everything and go.

Several? I thought the US has only hosted one world cup which was the 94 world cup?...

It would be 24 years later that USA would host again... Since in 2002 it was OFC/ AFC, 2006 UEFA, 2010 CAF, and 2014 CONMEBOL,

You would expect 2018 to be CONCACAF, which leaves USA as the only candidate

I'd be very surprised if the 2018 tournament wasn't staged in Europe, although the 2022 host nation is being announced at the same time and the US has a decent stab at this.

I think the best host for 2018 so far as the US bid is concerned — unless they win it of course — would be a European nation(s), as that helps out so far as 2022 is concerned.

EDIT: Australia has of course recently pulled out of the 2018 bidding process to focus on 2022, so in actual fact the United State's four 2018 rivals are all UEFA members.

FIFA aren't rotating anymore, so anyone could get it...
Indeed, the only rule of that kind currently in place is that nations from the same confederation can't host consecutive World Cups.

Europe will always have an advantage in the bidding process over our North American cousins, given that our standard envelope sizes are larger over here. This naturally means more bribe cash can be stuffed inside.

Come on NZ! I'm going to a party at the weekend at my pals house, she and her 4 other housemates are Kiwis. They're certainly my second team this WC.

I still can't get over what a drastic difference Donovan's goal yesterday has made for the US team. It's not just that they would have been out of the tournament. By winning the group, they've avoided having to play Germany next and the Argentina-Mexico winner after that. Now they face Ghana and, hopefully, the Uruguay-South Korea winner instead. Not that we should consider Ghana a pushover, but that's a significantly easier path. And all because we scored two goals in the draw with Slovenia.

I doubt they will rotate it very consistently now that they've held recent World Cups in Asia and Africa, with South America coming next year. Apparently only the previous two host continents are ineligible for a given bid. FIFA's most powerful members are disproportionately European, so it seems very unlikely that they will let three consecutive non-European World Cups to be held.

That seems to be the consensus right now. A lot of people seem to think that England is in strong position, since they already have enough stadiums (stadia?), the strong tradition, and they haven't hosted it in decades. It looks like their strongest competition is the Spain-Portugal joint bid.

Assuming that the 2018 WC does go to Europe, that would leave the US with much less competition for 2022. Japan and South Korea both have bids, but they hosted more recently in 2002. That leaves Australia as the US bid's biggest competitor. The cash bonanza that the 1994 World Cup gave to FIFA hasn't been forgotten, and that was when Americans were much less in tune to international soccer than they are now.

Damn exciting to be sure.. almost 2-2. Damn, if I was Italian I'd be pissed.

EDIT: 3-1 Serbia, now. Looks like it is arrividerci Italia after all.
