Ah you see this is where we get a little irked when people start confusing the whole UK/Britian/England thing. There are still Scots at the world cup. If you look you will find a saltire hanging over the balcony at every match. It's an interesting game I play while crying into my beer because SNP.

You should see all the English in Wales, who moved there in hope of an idyllic life and realised that there is hardly any work "in the valleys"

But you are absolutely right about your point.

Mexico's not a bad team and Argentina is overrated. Because they have Messi. Like the English have Rooney and we have Robben.

The Germans don't do that. They don't put a single player on the podium of death. It's much better to have a real team of equally good players than a team of gr8 individuals.
Although I dislike the Argentines (ever since the 1978 WC), I do like Messi. He's a nice character.

argentina vs. germany gonna very likely decided by who scores the first goal
i suspect germany will try to play rather defensive i nthe first 20 minutes and let argentina have more of the attacking and then counterattack
argentine will know that though and sit around more in the back as well

in the terms of attackers argentina has the clear advantage of messi, tevez higuain... in the midfield though i would say that germany has stronger players
in defense both sides are sketchy: mertesacker on the german side... and argentina with the legend of "defensive black outs" Martin Demichelis himself
all in all rather equal chances

on the USA-Ghana game: actually i think USA lost the game in overtime by simply being to hasty... with 27 minutes to go and altidore off the pitch the US resorted way, way too early to play high passes into the penalty box and hope for a lucky header (without having a player who is strong at headers against ghana palyers who were competent at that)... they should have taken their time and play to their strengths of having good technical players

and if when they are in the last desperate "High ball into the box" mode in the last 5-10 minutes: simply switch to 3 defenders and take a central defender into the central forward position to get a header on target

sure you risk getting that third goal but in overtime you simply have to take that risk
van Gaal uses that tactic with bayern münchen and had quite a few late game equalisers or even winning goals last season

On the BBC coverage earlier one of the commentators estimated the population of England supporters in "our country" at 70 million. I nearly spat my beer out from laughing. Some people really don't have a clue :D

I blame Jaffa. Just look what I found in The Grauniad:

I agree that USA played too many longballs in the late stages of the game, but to be fair we did create a few good chances with them - one or two better finishes and the scoreline could have swung a couple goals either way.

I'd like to see the USA learn to play better possession football - I'm not expecting a Brazilian tap-tap-tap style, but we need to be able to hold on to the ball better in certain stages of the game. This is especially true when you realize that Bob Bradley prefers a 4-4-2 with two holding midfielders.

Inflatable spitfires. Classy.

The Germans must have brought their inflatable Eurofighters. :D

OK time to share the holiday snaps. Since I was traveling on the day of the England v USA game, you'd think I've have more sense than wearing a red t-shirt. Fitted in incognito with Jaffa's mates! (except when bumping into Geordie stag party at Tebay services, where I was the only one in male clothing:eek:.)

Ouch! I felt that Germany was the favorite today but I did not expect such an ambush. The official who disallowed the goal should be reffing pub league football from now on, but it's ultimately irrelevant. You can't but acknowledge that the Germans were totally superior in all aspects of the game.

The FA should be sacked en masse, but Fabio should stay - you won't find a better manager IMHO. Given time, he is a manager who can be counted on to rebuild a better England squad. I can so no reason whatsoever to get rid of him, and I can't really blame England's failure to advance on him much at all. It may sound a bit harsh, but I feel like England simply bottled it today - with the caveat that they were faced with an absolutely excellent performance from Germany - a team that looks to be a true contender in this tournament.

The debate has been raging for some time, but I think England should breathe a collective sigh of relief that Emile Heskey's World Cup career is surely over.

I would be furious - except it's against Mexico...as a USA fan I am contractually forbidden from feeling any sympathy for them. ;)

A brief resume of the USA - Ghana match. I feel that we were quite evenly matched, and ultimately Ghana simply punished us more for our mistakes than we did for them. I am intensly proud of the way USA played the whole match at 110% and never really lost their heads. Up until the final whistle they were toiling away and we were SO close to victory so many times. Bradley made good tactical adjustments, I don't think he can be blamed for the loss. If anything can be criticized it would be a failure to finish several chances, a little weakness on the part of the defense and Clark's mistake for the first goal. One thing the entire team needs to work on is maintianing possession.

The only thing that really annoyed me in the match was the time-wasting from the Ghanaians in extra time. The ref quite correctly tacked on almost 3 minutes at the very end to compensate for it, and USA nearly capitalized.

I'm proud of the team, we had a good tournament overall and showed that while we are still nowhere near the top tier, we are quite good and continue to improve...and we will be back.

As for Ghana, good luck, but after being knocked out twice by you guys don't expect much sympathy from over here when the Uruguayans knock you out... :D

The official took his cue from the England defence.

Germany superior re goalkeeping?

What are the chances of the FA making a decision that helps England? They are in the short-term. On Capello, I'm having a tough time with his decision making; not taking Adam Johnson, Gerrard on the left, Heskey, Heskey and Heskey, Rooney deep, Rooney not fit but plays, Neuer flapping away but where is Crouch?, the two hours before rubbish ...

A bit OTT re the German performance and they have problems at the back, but then so do Argentina and Spain.

Heskey will adapt to become a midfield general.

USA - not sure it was 110%, the closing down wasn't good for most of the first-half. They came back in the second-half and made Ghana look poor, but the latter rose again. Both teams can play in the first 45 minutes.:) Topped the group, not too bad.

Bradley - not starting Dempsey behind the striker(s)?

Edit - Fuzzy14 - nice wheels.

Cheers,

After some reflection and now the dust has settled, one conclusion I can draw for certain from the Argentina / Mexico game is that Heinze looks like the bad guy in the first Die Hard movie. Or the Professor of Potions in Harry Potter, whats his name..

We haven't had a vuvuzela gag recently, here's one I found this evening...

Vuvuzela vs Doom

Haha, that made me laugh. They don't just make the noise when they frag, it's non-stop. :D

Neuer flapping away but where is Crouch?, the two hours before rubbish ...

If Upson can score a header past Neuer, Crouch would have been the obvious choice to bring on in the second half. I question Capello's tactics and choices. Not in the same league as someone like The Chosen One or even Ferguson who adapts tactics and players specific to the team he's facing, and wins (as opposed to Australia's Dutch manager Verbeek who adapted to Germany in the most dismal way, and loses badly).

I think we were just getting burned for pace in the first half. After Ghana started to tire a bit, we got a better hold of the game, but Ghana came out blazing in extra time. Somehow USA needs to work on starting matches with more sharpness. We concede early far, far too often.

Dempsey sometimes plays as a withdrawn striker, but I think he got pushed to the wing to make room for holding midfielders.

Didn't help in the Confederations Cup final where you took a 2-0 lead against Brazil, but still lost 2-3. Not conceding at all, like when you beat Spain 2-0 to get to that final, is the ticket. ;)

Germany just scored (again) 2-0; goodbye England.

You must be watching a delayed telecast. Otherwise I'll bet you a $100 England scores next. ;)

oh well i just realized that both müller-counter attacks in the second half happened after english set-plays and not being up the field in general..

that brings the question: has the english squad after penalties now stopped training set-plays all together ;)

also i read that barry wasn't going into this tournament fully fit.. which explains why he was simply outrun by Özil... which leads to questioning Capellos sanity of putting a less then fit player against such an opposition

Nippy young German midfielders vs not fit English defensive midfielder and a pair of snail-paced centre backs.

Never really going to end well was it? :p

Joachim Löw has been discussing his strategy going into the match...

"We were successful in luring Terry out of defence with (Thomas) Mueller and (Lukas) Podolski penetrating the wide defence.

"We knew that the midfielders (Steven) Gerrard and (Frank) Lampard always support the forwards, and that their midfield would be open."

"So our objective was to set Terry up with Klose to force him to come out of the defence. We knew that the full-backs would be very much to the sides and create spaces between the England defenders that would help us penetrate their defence."

A simple enough plan from the World Cup's best-dressed gaffer, and it worked a treat.

Have to agree. I keep hearing that Capello's a great manager, but come on, we had no wingers, meaning no pace and no width against Germany, it was just a clusterfek in midfield. Everyone except Capello seems to be of the same opinion that Gerrard should play a forward midfield role supporting Rooney, who I probably would have dropped anyway. And what is the love affair with Heskey? So he can hold the ball up, great! Surely we'd be better with a striker that can actually score, so when England's 'talisman' (Rooney) plays naff, we can actually drop him and have a decent replacement. Gerrard on the left, no, just NO! And yes, where was Crouch? With 20 mins to go and you need goals, who do you bring on, someone that troubles the defence with his height and presence, someone who's a proven goalscorer in an England shirt, or someone who can only trouble the Germans because they're too busy laughing at him?

Question of the day... Will Fabio be fired? £10 mil says he probably won't... Will he walk?

I think we should keep him on and let him pick the best young players England have got and let's work with them for a while. Perhaps the new team could play in the next friendly (August?) I think it would maybe placate the crowd of they could see where the next 10 years of players are coming from...

Hopefully yesterday's defeat means no more international football for James, Terry, Ferdinand, Upson, Carragher, SWP, Gerrard, Lampard, J Cole, Barry, Heskey....

Absolute **** the lot of them (although James played well yesterday and Ferdinand was injured).

Anyways, I'm looking forward to GER vs ARG now, should be a good game.

Today's predictions:

Netherlands 2 - 0 Slovakia
Brasil 4 - 1 Chile (Brasil scored more against Chile in qualifying if I heard correctly).

So everyone, based on those predictions, get ready for two 0 - 0 draws

Thing is, will he pick the young players? Looking at the squad he took, I'd have to say no unless this performance is a serious wake up call for him.

I was watching the match in the pub. The referees have a difficult job but that was at least a foot over the line. Ridiculous.

Though in my capacity as a Manchester City fan, I was delighted to see Tevez's 2nd goal for Argentina. Like a bullet.

Now, I'd like to see some young players blooded in the team in place of some of the pensioners. Like Adam Johnson. I'm glad he didn't go with that shambles of a team tbh.
