England's coming home!

The only good thing about this World Cup was that a bunch of football fans left the UK. Now they are coming back after an embarrassing England defeat - everything is back to normal, it seems.

I do and I'm not even English! The decision changed the whole outcome of the match. Starting the second half at 2-2 England wouldn't have been in the position of chasing the game. Germany's goals came in the 67 and 70 minutes when England were getting desperate with 20 minutes to go to get the equalizer they needed to just stay in the game which they already should have had anyway.

As a neutral spectator I feel somewhat robbed of not seeing the tight contest the second half should have been, like the first half was.

It would have been tighter, sure, but I think blaming it on the ref is trying to hide the fact that Germany was vastly superior.

Either way, this world cup is a joke. Too many bad decisions, be it because of the refs or the Fifa.

Señor Tevez is indeed very offside there.

Yet the linesman who had a clear view and the ref consulted on it still allowed it. Maybe the linesman thinks the goalkeeper touched it, but he'd still be offisde because of the advantage it gave him, no?

PS. May as well end the game now, Mexico has lost because of that offside goal. I'm blaming the ref for the loss even before the game is over! ;) Statto - no team in the entire history of humanity has ever won a WC game going into halftime 2-0 down. Mexico would be the first ever if they do.

Yep, he was offside when the ball was played so even if it took a deflection off a Mexican on the way to him he should have been flagged.

Ouch! I felt that Germany was the favorite today but I did not expect such an ambush. The official who disallowed the goal should be reffing pub league football from now on, but it's ultimately irrelevant. You can't but acknowledge that the Germans were totally superior in all aspects of the game.

The FA should be sacked en masse, but Fabio should stay - you won't find a better manager IMHO. Given time, he is a manager who can be counted on to rebuild a better England squad. I can so no reason whatsoever to get rid of him, and I can't really blame England's failure to advance on him much at all. It may sound a bit harsh, but I feel like England simply bottled it today - with the caveat that they were faced with an absolutely excellent performance from Germany - a team that looks to be a true contender in this tournament.

The debate has been raging for some time, but I think England should breathe a collective sigh of relief that Emile Heskey's World Cup career is surely over.

Rules-gurus again please for Tevez' goal - is there no offside in the opposition's penalty box?

I would be furious - except it's against Mexico...as a USA fan I am contractually forbidden from feeling any sympathy for them. ;)

A brief resume of the USA - Ghana match. I feel that we were quite evenly matched, and ultimately Ghana simply punished us more for our mistakes than we did for them. I am intensly proud of the way USA played the whole match at 110% and never really lost their heads. Up until the final whistle they were toiling away and we were SO close to victory so many times. Bradley made good tactical adjustments, I don't think he can be blamed for the loss. If anything can be criticized it would be a failure to finish several chances, a little weakness on the part of the defense and Clark's mistake for the first goal. One thing the entire team needs to work on is maintianing possession.

The only thing that really annoyed me in the match was the time-wasting from the Ghanaians in extra time. The ref quite correctly tacked on almost 3 minutes at the very end to compensate for it, and USA nearly capitalized.

I'm proud of the team, we had a good tournament overall and showed that while we are still nowhere near the top tier, we are quite good and continue to improve...and we will be back.

As for Ghana, good luck, but after being knocked out twice by you guys don't expect much sympathy from over here when the Uruguayans knock you out... :D

I would vigorously oppose the use of replay in football. Replay slows the game. Sensors on goal should be enough. Instantaneous, no replay.

That would be fine for deciding if a ball crosses the line or not, but a replay is essential for incidents like allowing Tevez's goal. I suggested before maybe allowing each team one or two 'video appeals' per match if they want to dispute a decision.

Tevez' second goal just reminded me so much of Maradona's second goal against England - cheater first one but brilliant second one.

PS. I'm looking at 100% failure in my predictions so far, 0 from 4!

Did anyone see Heinze giving the cameraman a slap after he ran into him? Nice. I heard he was a bit of an angry lad.

Chances of a 22 man dust up after the match?

Klinsmann put into the DFB that a national team should be:
A: led by absolute specialists in training
B: should also be coached in psychological matters
B: while playing football the team should be having fun

Agreed. Him and Löw have revolutionized German football...I remember reading that in 2006 the team before the World Cup was practicing archery as a concentration exercise...brilliant if you ask me...other national teams should spend less time doing things they've done all year and more on the mental side and coming together as a Team.

Cheers.

Was this across the line? They haven't shown the replay from the in goal camera yet, but the angle of the Argentine player indicates it's over. Score should be 2-2.

Mexico's not a bad team. If not for the offside goal and the stupid pass from the Mexican defender, the relative performances of these two teams would justify the score being 1-1 instead of 3-1

Mexico's not a bad team and Argentina is overrated. Because they have Messi. Like the English have Rooney and we have Robben.

The Germans don't do that. They don't put a single player on the podium of death. It's much better to have a real team of equally good players than a team of gr8 individuals.
Although I dislike the Argentines (ever since the 1978 WC), I do like Messi. He's a nice character.

No, the whole ball has to be over the line.

Since the guy's head is in-line with the goal, the ball can't be COMPLETELY over the line, so no goal.

Pretty good round of 16 so far if you like goals and controversy. Already more goals during this round of 16 than the 2006 World Cup and there are still 4 games left. :)

Tell that to Messi when he plays Arsenal again! That was a one-man destructo-performance.

We'll see soon enough how the two different philosophies play out head to head in the Germany/Argentina match.

Kudos for mexico fighting to the bitter end. That's the spirit.

Argentina is good but they are not perfect. I definitely see a chance for germany. I also have to admit that I have my problems with all this Maradonna is a god crap. tzz

I think Argentina are good enough to win the World Cup. I'm going to stick to my Spain-Brazil final prediciton, but Germany and Argentina are true contenders.

As for Maradona, he's one of the biggest cheaters in football, and a fat cokehead. But God he makes things interesting, doesn't he! :D

Ah you see this is where we get a little irked when people start confusing the whole UK/Britian/England thing. There are still Scots at the world cup. If you look you will find a saltire hanging over the balcony at every match. It's an interesting game I play while crying into my beer because SNP.

Add onto that the fact that the worst trouble causers would have been here anyway and nowhere near South Africa, what with them not being permitted to travel abroad for the duration of the tournament...
