After Paraguay's goalie saved the penalty kick he fouled Fabregas who could've easily put it in. Paraguay was lucky there.

Edit: MacsRgr8 beat me to it.

Definitely a clear foul on Fabregas by the Paraguay keeper...

This performance does not bode well for Spain should they advance. They are bossing the game but not scoring. The Germans will defend better and be much more dangerous going forward.

Jeez, they almost missed twice!

GOL!!!!

here is a player refusing a penalty: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mw6MYwokbhU&feature=related
and here are two separate teams (ascoli and ajax), in dutch and italian professional leagues, that allowed the other team to score an uncontested goal because there was a goal caused by a misunderstanding with a player being injured.

Don't panic, you've restored my faith in humanity!
Instead of the anti-racism oath at the start, maybe the players should be taking a fair play one instead (which would encompass anti-racism anyway.)
I'm not in particular favour of penalty goals being awarded, I believe
Suarez's save was more reactionary than deliberate and besides Ghana did have a penalty awarded.

Before Argentina/Germany kicked off I was thinking that was the tie most would have liked to have seen in the final, now I'm glad it wasn't.

*Edit: Lively end to the Spain/Paraguay game. That could have been 1-1 or 2-0 in the last 2 minutes.

Ramos almost got beheaded!!!!!!!:D:eek:

Anyways it's Uruguay vs Netherlands

And

Spain vs Germany (a rematch of the 2008 EURO final) that's gonna be a great match!

Europe-dominated, perhaps, but a very poor showing from some top European sides.

Good game for the neutral, but it was a mismatch. Paraguay never offered enough going forward. They worked hard and defended well for much of the game, but it was always Spain's match to lose. Spain played well, but not very well. When you look at the Germans and the Dutch, the Spaniards look a little shaky. I still think they might beat Germany - you can argue that Germany have not yet faced a team as talented and well organized as Spain yet in this tournament. Still, Germany must be seen as the favorite going into the semis.

That Holland - Germany final is looking increasingly likely.

so much for south american dominance with germany, spain, holland in the semi finals...
now it's up to uruguay to keep that run with european teams never being able to win the worldcup outside of europe:
with a suarez being banned, lodeiro being out injured together with dogin (sp?) and perhaps even lugano
a monumental challenge for them for sure

germany vs spain sure is going to be a classic again .. germany is stronger than 2008 and spain doesn't have quite the flow like 2 years ago.. finally at least a battle of 2 midfields of equal strenght... and hopefully a benched torres who _again_ was a waste

The excitement level has definitely picked up over the group stages, though we had a couple good games there.

I'm hoping for close matches in the last three.

...you can argue that Germany have not yet faced a team as talented and well organized as team xy yet in this tournament.

also known as the historic famous last words uttered before team xy gets kicked out

fact is that germany played 5 games at this world cup:
3 against teams play very high upfield (australia, england, argentina): 12:2 goals
2 against teams played with deep defenses (ghana, serbia): 1:1

spain is an attacking side with pushing their defenders over the middle line.. which just happens the enemies the german team has played best so far .. what they don't like is underdog-teams who sit in the back and force the germans to make the game

the real question will be wether the germans can make up for having müller miss out because of his yellow card ...

great day of football.

absolutely impressive display by germany. argentina was demolished.
by far the favourites at this point.

spain-paraguay was a snorefest until the penalty, then the game exploded.

ref was a bit of a stage-seeker but he got it mostly right.

first offside paraguay goal: the goal scorer was ONside, but his teamamte was offside, since he jumped for the ball and took one of the defender away from the eventual goalscore, in my opinion it should be considered active offside.

both penalty were borderline (pushing/pulling and some teatrics by the striker) but he used the same metric for both, so ok.
the repetiton was too strict.
the penalty on fabregas was clear but i can see why he wouldn't give a third penalty withi one minute 9or maybe he just didn't see it, it was a confused play).

vilaa was offside on his goal, by a very large margin. on the first pass it was a passive offside, but as he scored on the post-bounce, it makes that same offside active. should have been disallowed (it's one of the textbook exmaples for refs).

overall spain deserved to go through.

the semi will be interesting but they have to stop their game way up if they want to stop germany, a task at the momnet seemingly impossible.

turned surprisingly into e european world cup.
italy and france don't count. they are powerhouses, but anyone that follow international football would have had very low expectation on them, france because of the chaos they were in and domenech, italy because lippi fielded by far the worst italian side in 50 years, andpossibly ever.

takao, i never heard of the austria-italy story: sad and hilarious at the same time. luckily the game has evolved since.
and i agree that paraguay would have been a tougher opponent for germany than what likely spain will be, as obviously germany's game is counterattack (their speed is unbelievable)

about the repeated penalty: in the replay you can clearly see how before he touches the ball that some (spanish and paraguay) players are 2 or even 3 steps already in the box and then he has to repeat it
correct call IMHO

gee as somebody else just pointed out on tv germany is now 3 times in a row in the world cup semifinals (2002,2006, 2010) ... which they managed twice before:
1966,1970,1974
1982,1986,1990

please don't let them repeat this feature again.. it would make german TV unwatchable for another decade

That is correct. But, the Paraguay penalty should also have been retaken for the same reason then.
It is very hard for a ref to be consistent with these types of calls.

What I don't understand is why the Paraguayan player on the line didn't dive to his left and palm that ball around the post keeper-style. FIFA not extending Suarez' ban for unsportsmanlike conduct has declared such a thing is fair play.

I was watching on the web so missed that bit. I was following the boot, not the shin. Apologies to Snr Ramos.

If you were following the boot, you would have seen it planted squarely in his face.

Indeed....
Suarez though is used to "cheating". He plays with Ajax here in Holland and he is renown for his diving all over the pitch. He is a type of player that will think of these tricks.

It's not too clear in that image, and IIRC it was the shin (lower part obviously) that hit the face... just as painful though.

true but it's the same with the paraguay keeper fouling after the repeated penalty... in that moment i'm sure the referee was wrestling for a second with himself .. but yet another penalty ? he simply couldn't do it

for my self during the whole paraguay penalty scene i was still laughing about the perhaps most outlandish, undiscrete, and flat out ridiculous holding ever comitted by a defender ... and that the spanish have the guts to _complain_ about that penalty
Pique deserves a comedy award for that foul
