Wigan continue their bizarre late surge. They've taken a lot of bigger scalps lately.

Meanwhile. at Carrow Road in Norwich, Suarez has already scored two. The Canaries' porous defense is giving Liverpool opportunities that they are, for once, capitalizing on. Two very skillful strikes by Suarez. But we started Carragher, so I'm not sure about a clean sheet.

looks like Bremen just can't stop gutting their squad ... once Pizarro leaves they are toast

one can hope they make a brilliant transfer during the brake for once ... the last fews have been passable at best

I guess they're scrapping together all the smallchange to persuade Guardiola to become their next coach ;)

Pizzaro has(unfortunately) already been elsewhere in his mind, the last six games, so no real loss there

Norwich's defense allowed us far too much space, but Suarez's finish for each of his three goals was superb. Could have been 5-0.

I really wish we had the whole week to prepare for the cup final...Fulham is a big distraction.

i don't know with 16 goals this season he sure carried Bremen for much of the Season ...
honestly do you really want Rosenberg as the number one striker ? ;) (Arnautovic hasn't found his position in the squad either)

But i would love seeing Guardiola in the Bundesliga no matter the squad .. that simply would too strange ..

Pizarro:In der Hinrunde hui, Rückrunde pfui
Schaaf apparently doesn't think very highly of Arnautovic, he just got fit again this week and wasn't even in the squad for the game on Saturday, meanwhile Hunt, who was out for almost 4 months gets to play after two training sessions.... Den Schaaf soll mal einer verstehen......

I've just seen the latest team news for Monday's Manchester derby...

Alex Ferguson has controversially dropped talismanic referee Howard Webb from Man Utd's starting 12 for the crucial Premier League clash with Man City, and will instead hand a start to Andre Marriner.

Early reports indicated that crowd favourite Webb would line up for the league leaders, but news has now surfaced that Ferguson is to take a gamble on Marriner. Marriner, who has only made 3 starts for Man Utd this season, is a surprise selection by Ferguson, given Webb's ability to pull highly contentious decisions out of the bag in big matches.

"Webby has put in some great performances for us in the past, but I feel the expectation levels of supporters could be too much for him on this occasion," revealed Ferguson. "I might put him on the bench as an impact referee in case we need one of their players sending off or a penalty deep into stoppage time."

The news of Marriner's inclusion has left United fans miffed given Ferguson's criticism of his performance in a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in 2009.

"It doesn't make any sense not to include Webbo," said avid fan John Henderson, who has lived in Plymouth all his life and whose only connection with Manchester is that he once voted for Bez when he was on Celebrity Big Brother.

"In games like this you want your best performers on the pitch, and Webbsio pulling the strings is as good as going into the game with a two-nil lead. I hope that Ferguson has seen something in Marriner in training that suggests he can rise to the occasion. If City have still got eleven men on the pitch at half-time then I'll be singing Webbsio's name. I'll be singing it at the TV, but rest assured that the wife will be left in no doubt about how angry I am."

IMHO Schaaf has currently a massive problem with putting players into correct spots simply for the fact that the whole Rückrunde he has insisted on playing with a diamond formation in the midfield

he simply doesn't have the squad for such a formation, Marin and Arnautovic are great as rather offensive wingers ,
so is Junuzovic on the left/center position (where he played at Austria Wien..) where did Schaaf put him ? in a rather defensive right midfield position..
why not a offensive 4-2-3-1 ?

also Schaaf seem to have a supernatural confidence in below average players like Bargfrede, who simply never were good enough

The FA Cup final will be heart breaker for Liverpool fans. I can only hope that the scoreline is close and we don't get swept away. If it goes to penalties there is a chance, but given Chelsea's current form I can't see them failing to win.

Glad to see Torres scoring again, though from a Liverpool perspective he picked the worst time to rediscover form.

:D

I read on Twitter that the FA is considering Hodgson because of his success with small countries.

I think that assumes a level of pragmatism that we all know the FA do not possess.

I'm hoping that this results in a new facerub/headbang that I can add to my collection of entertaining football gifs.

So, for those saying AVB needed more time, then how come Di Matteo can get Chelsea into the CL final, beating Barca along the way, and even more miraculously, getting El Nino on the score sheet, including a hat-trick. As Barry Manilow once sang, could it be magic? ;)

I see Wigan carry on their great escape, and now Martinez is being linked with some top managerial jobs. While Wigan's current form is something else, and I do believe they'll avoid relegation, what has Martinez being doing for the rest of the season, because they're the same players that couldn't buy a win only 7 or so games ago...

So, the Pigs really are missing their rapist centre forward, as they again drop more points, putting us in the driving seat going in to the last game. We both play relegated teams. Not sure if that's good or not, and we have seemed to struggle against the lower teams for some reason.

So, Uncle Woy for England. Who saw that one coming? Is it purely down to the fact 'arry would have cost the FA more? This recession is a killer!

well the main problem right now is that the team doesn't function as a team at all, worst second round for the club ever. I have no idea, why they bought Arnautovic in the first place, he clearly is no playmaker nor a real striker, but like you said a winger, a position that doesn't exist in Schaaf's concept. That's why Marin was sold Junzovic has played in left midfield so far.
What really broke Werder's neck is the fact that they didn't score any goals, while conceding as many as they have for years. To sum it up the team only works when there is a real playmaker in the team like Micoud, Diego and Özil are, without one, they WILL be struggling to stay in the league.

According to the German press Chelsea are seemingly willing to let go one of their players to Bremen, as part of the Marin deal. Has anyone heard about this as well and who could it possibly be?

The 2012 FA Cup final thread

So, 5th May. Wembley Stadium. Liverpool FC vs. Chelsea FC. Chelsea hitting 6 past QPR at the weekend, with ex-Liverpool striker Fernando Torres scoring a hat-trick. Liverpool's run of bad form in the league ended with a 3-0 victory away to Norwich city, new Kop darling Suarez hitting a hat-trick of his own. With the third being a GOLLLLLAZZZZZZO! That's goal of the season contender for the plain English society.

It's all coming to a boil in what promises to be a grudge match like no other. The two teams' fans don't traditionally get on very well.

What are your thoughts? Who will you be supporting.

There are ramblings that the FA went for Woy because Trevor Brooking still doesn't like Redknapp (sour grapes there Trev), plus Woy is experienced in International Football...and is a cheaper option.

You could look at it and say that Roman realized the project wasn't working and pulled the plug on AVB before things got out of hand.

OR, you could say that once again the spoiled primadonnas who are the Chelsea squad revolted against being told what to do and only started playing better when the impatient Abramovich got rid of the guy the players disliked and replaced him with a 'yes man' who lets John Terry & Co. do as they please.

The truth lies somewhere in the middle of course. I think AVB was intended to be for the long-term, but the birthing pains surrounding the switch to a new system were too severe for Abramovich to stomach.

As you and daneoni say, I think the fact that Roy comes cheap was a factor. But, as much as people downplay it, Roy also has more international experience than any other English manager. I get that more people see Redknapp as a winner, but really, what has he won apart from that devastatingly costly FA Cup title at Portsmouth? Redknapp appears to be a very old-school English manager in his style; I'm not sure that's the best approach to international football in 2012.

So I arrive back from Norfolk to find rumour sweeping the City that Nick 'Nicky' Barmby has been suspended by the Allams, who have also put the club up for sale.

If either is true, bloody hell.

Yikes. That seems to go against everything I've read coming from the owner. He was at pains to say how committed he was to the club and how strong his local roots were. It seems like a bolt from the blue.

actually i think a lot of past squad problems have been overshadowed by a couple of really great players: Diego, Frings, Özil, Pizarro etc. while recent players simply didn't have that impact to carry the team on their own

thinkt Ekici for example .. 2 years ago he and Toni Kroos where roughly at the same position as "talent who could become great" ...
similar with Marin and Reus

sometimes it is simply bad luck

Looks like the Podolski deal is done. Hopefully he doesn't turn out to be a Chamakh or a Bendtner.

bets are that 3 months into next season he will already be fan favorite ...
he is a honest and straight character to the liking of english fans, and he will be the second player after van Persie who actually knows how to take a shot at a goal

the fact that he could score in the Bundesliga in a catastrophic Köln squad while fighting against regelation (38 Köln goals in 33 games, 18 goals + 6 assists Podolski ) is massively impressive ... for the majority of the season he carried their offense more or less alone

Also something to keep in mind: today, at age _26_,he is already the 6th best german national squad striker of all time, 5 goals more and he would be _3rd_ behind Klose and Gerd Müller
