By the gods...

Have Nike just given up this season or something?

lol. better than i thought they'd come up with. i like the new US kit but they keep insisting on putting that damn sash across(ghosted in on the new home) the shoulder. feh!

IMHO Umbro, yes i know they are owned by nike, is making the best kits.

Agreed. I was disappointed to read recently that Manchester City are switching to Nike after the upcoming season,
Umbro have produced some lovely stuff for them over the past few years.

Is that an actual strip for next year then? You'd think for an alleged £450m (over 5 years), Etihad would insist bigger and more prominent font? Or is it further evidence of colluding, with Etihad part (or is it wholly) owned by Sheikh Monsour?

Nope, it's their third shirt from a season or two back.

Regular readers will be all too aware that I'm a bastard for a sash shirt. :D

As it was a third shirt – and therefore not likely to be worn that often – I don't think there was an issue with the sponsor being reduced in size. As it happened though the shirt proved very popular and was retained for a second season if memory serves.

The shirt's designer noted at the time...

We wanted to draw attention to the crest, and this was done with the full support of the club and the club’s sponsor, Ethiad... With the sponsor, we wanted to make sure that it wouldn’t interfere with the sash. For the last decade, or so, any shirt with a design across the front is compromised with a space where the sponsor sits. Well this is a pure football kit and the sponsor – whether it is a brand or a manufacturer – should look to compliment the kit.

There are a few instances where a sponsor has had its logo shown in a 'non-traditional' way to enhance the look of the shirt, so I wouldn't go viewing the sizing/placement as anything sinister.

I miss the time where Barca had a plain red and blue striped kit without a sponsor (or charity). It wasn't that long ago either.

I think the FC Basel kit looks better. Just stick the Barcelona crest on that and be done with it!

The placement of sponsor on the left half of the chest isn't great, I always thought that positioning was to show the team is close to the player/fan's heart (symbolic), so a sponsor in that area is a little weird to me.

Oh, no (and I do like that shirt by the way!). Not at all. Wasn't suggesting that was the smoking gun or anything. But it smoking gun or not, the size of that deal is fishy. Clearly trying to circumvent the FFP rules. In my opinion that is.

Compared to other stadium naming rights, the deal was WAY out there...

Oh, there's definite loophole tomfoolery going on, particularly with the stadium naming rights. Mind, I think I'm right in saying the pictured shirt predates their 'sudden windfall' in any case.

I think that shirt was post-Shinewatra but pre-Sheik Mansour? In any case, Man City are going to furiously work every loophole they can in order to funnel money into the club over and above their revenue.

It will be interesting to see what real impact the financial fair play rules actually have. Will they be too weak to change anything? Will they be shoddily enforced? Will they simply be ignored? I find it hard to believe they will actully have their intended effect, but that's because I have no faith in anything UEFA or FIFA do.

Here are the new Barca Home/Away kits. I like the Home kit but still not sure of the away one...keep thinking 'Lucozade bottle'

Somebody at Nike's got a bit friendly with the gradient tool in Photoshop

The home has grown on me, and as I've visited Barca a couple of times and got a couple of shirts from the past few seasons, I may get this one.
The away just looks a bit rubbish though.

In other news, Barton's been banned by the FA for 12 matches after his antics at the Etihad.

QPR are going to find it difficult to get rid of him since he can't even play till what, November or December? And he didn't even have a good season on the pitch either, so I don't see any club wanting him unless he's willing to take a massive pay cut...what a waste of space.

one can hope that financial fair will have an effect ... after all this is the first season which will influence the 3-years back when the rules comes into effect 2015 so any big deals made now would be dangerous (i suspect quite a few clubs stumbling)

one thing though which i wonder is how the financial fair play rules will influence "works team"... you know teams formed out of factory squads and such .. after all there are plenty of those PSV Eindhoven (Phillips), FC Sochaux (Peugeot), Bayer 04 Leverkusen, VFL Wolfsburg (VW),FC Carl Zeiss Jena etc.

how is the ruling on those i wonder

Or indeed the greatest 'works' team of them all, Vauxhall Motors of the Conference North.

It's kinda like pornography, you know it when you see it. :D

I think that this article in the wikipedia makes some very good points.

All I get from the article is both sets of media moan about a loss, some English media and fans are obsessed with world wars and getting one over the Hun, and for the the Germans it's the Netherlands. As for Netherlanders, they are too busy arguing amongst themselves.:)

---

The FFP rules - naming/sponsorship; do they mention anything about looking at the top earners' previous deals as a benchmark?

Barton:

He deserves about 8 games, the 12 is excessive; the Norwich City red was a joke. Also, Tevez should've been sent for his part in the build up to the elbow, and Kompany booked for his bumping. But why look at others when we have Barton .

Works teams; there's the one out of that Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot.

Cheers,
OW

I sort of agree, but ultimately Barton is lucky he still has a football career at all, so I don't see the punishment as too harsh. Tevez's provocations were unsportsmanlike but not violent - I'm leaning yellow. Barton's reaction was straight red. I agree that Kompany probably should have been cautioned.

Don't think it was harsh. He would have got an automatic 6 game ban for his second red (for kicking Aguero) so 4+6=10. To bump up to 12 for bringing the game into disrepute is actually quite lenient. Particularly as his fine was only £70k odd. A week's wages... I would have expected maybe a 3-5 game ban plus £200k for that last bit.

The club have just confirmed Barmby's sacking (he'd appealed against the decision, there was a tribunal thingy, all very messy) so I suppose the path is clear to make an appointment.

I note Alex Bruce will be available on a free this summer...
