Cue the conspiracy theory! Could Fergie have masterminded his exclusion so as to protect him for next season, knowing his recent injury record?

He's available on a free though! :)

And if you believe Wikipedia, he was instrumental in helping us reach the play-offs in 2005 (despite only featuring in 6 games). He must be a legend!

Seems like there's a zero contact policy or just an over zealous ref?

He's Spanish isn't he? Must be some Eurozone crisis thing!

European refs definitely take a hard line on contact, but this is rather silly. But somehow the Greeks equalize off an Arsenal goalkeeping blunder...a 1-1 would be a fair result but the Poles should probably win it.

You aren't the first person to have said it...and as much as I hate to lend credence to any such theory without evidence, it is very weird for Fergie to remain silent about anything of this nature. His silence is very strange.

poland down to ten, after Szczesny got sent off and greece fails to make profit from the resulting penalty

Poland 1-1 Greece

Both teams had chances to win the game but failed to take them and both have lost a player to suspension. Poland comes off worse because they lost their starting keeper. Arsenal fans breathe a sigh of relief because, for once, a Szczesny error has not cost them any points. ;)

Exciting match though. Lets hope for more of that.

Wirelessly posted

Lord Blackadder and Fizzoid,

SAF is right not to mention it. :D

ITV have Keane sitting next to Viera!

And Russia's sash is thin. :(
Edit - it's me peepers, the red doesn't stand out from the red.

Cheers,
OW

Russia is picking up where they left off in '08. On present evidence it looks as if they should win their group rather easily, with Greece second.

Poland comes off better now that error-prone Szczesny has to sit.

Russia's going to win their group with such ease and could make some serious noise in the knockout rounds. Really wanted to buy Dzagoev for my fantasy team but decided to stick with Modric. Oh, and Cech is my keeper. :(

Only if you assume the backup, who I know nothing about, will be better. Granted, you can't get too much worse than Szczesny's performance today.

Group A is weak though. I can see Russia getting viciously spanked in the knockout stage, because if they win the group they'll probably be playing either Germany or the Netherlands in the quarterfinals. Russia did look good today though, with a little luck they might do something interesting.

todays result is perhaps too flattering to russia ..after 60 minutes many of their players looked totally out of air ...
their central defenders also looked problematic, not very speedy but since the czech attack line wasn't very mobile (Baros was useless) and additionally not really the best out there either

they also gave the russians way too much room between the midfield and defense line

against more agile squads with good stamina they might be very vunerable late in the game

USA 3-1 Antigua & Barbuda [World Cup Qualifier]

I really wanted to see USA lay down a 4-0/5-0 thrashing here. A&B (FIFA ranked 105th) played pure counterattacking football with 10 men behind the ball all game long. They defended very stoutly and we missed some very clear chances.

Overall, I'm satisfied with the result but we've run all the way through our depth chart at left back and are down to the bare bones there...Torres deputized there tonight but picked up a knock. Not sure who's left.

Next up is away to Guatemala on Tuesday (I think). They will be physical, play dirty and press us much harder than A&B. It will be a stern test in a very hostile environment.

Now back to the Euros...

As a Guatemalan i would like to agree... but i don't think so, i expect the US to run over us :S, if you must look at the game we're already losing 1-0 to Jamaica, no passing at all, worse defense than A&B, after watching glimpses of the US-A&B game i think we'll end up last :(

I was greatly amused to see that former Hull City player Marc Jospeh featured for A&B against the US. He's now 35 and playing for Kendal in the depths of non-League.

With that in mind how the hell did you only manage to score three, your Lordship? :D

I felt like A&B failed to press us much, and I don't think Guatemala will make that error. But we'll see. Bust of luck!

I know...I kept shouting at the TV "I want four! At least four!". We did hit the bar looking for a fourth, but as a Liverpool fan I know how useless hitting the bar is in terms of real benefits. I especially wanted the clean sheet. But credit to A&B, they never gave up and made it hard for us, geriatric defenders and all.

Not to make excuses, but there was a lot of rain during the match and the waterlogged pitch definitely favored A&B's game plan.

I am also pleased to see that Mexico struggled against equally unfavored Guyana (FIFA ranked 99th), eventually winning 3-1 just like us. So we aren't the only team having a little stumble here.

Dutch played like an Arsenal team; chance after chance after chance but no end product...and then sucker-punched.

an awful lot of missed chances from the dutch ... that means for them the games against germany/portugal will be already an 'early final', and their defense sure looked massively spotty .. van Bronckhorst sure is missing a lot

now on to Germany vs Portugal: whoever wins this has a strong chance to make it past the group stage

edit: and that's it .. a very german victory over disciplined Portugal thanks to a header from Gomez
