So apart from an excuse to increase the wage budget and probably give a job to your sisters husband, just what DO FIFAs/UEFAs goal line assistant refs (or whatever they're called) do? Has anyone known them to give a decision? As the pundits mentioned last night, he didn't even adjust himself to see if the ball had crossed the line, his view would have been obscured by the post.

It's funny, since I hadn't seem them do anything all tournament, but I read that that was because they have a very limited number of things for which they are allowed to get involved (for example, I don't think they can flag for a penalty for a foul). HOWEVER, I was under the impression that one of the few things they were responsible for was determining whether the ball had crossed the line. Apparently not.

What is the objection to technology? It all seems so daft. The crowd can see the replay - we can see the replay, why can't the ref get to see it?

There's plenty of technology used elsewhere - the advertising hoardings etc

Also - It works well in Cricket and Rugby...

I can understand Paltini's fears that introducing technology might lead to a "feature creep" situation where it is used in more and more situations until it becomes like the NFL, with dozens of stoppages for review per game.

But I honestly don't think that will happen. All that is needed is a way to precisely determine, independent of human eyes, whether the ball crosses the line for a goal. That's it.

Another non-intrusive use of technology that would require zero investment would be retrospective bans and fines for serious fouls (such as violent conduct or diving) caught by the TV cameras but mishandled by the refs. MLS is doing this right now and it seems to be working well. FIFA rules on retrospective actions are stupid, and need to be changed.

+1

Ran through LA Galaxy v Portland Timbers:

The Galaxy player is running down the clock in the Timber's half, fending off 2 Portland players, one of the latter gets the hump and punches the LA man, the commentator says, "...surprised Mosquera escaped a yellow.", a yellow :D.

Any retrospective action?

according to the german "kicker" magazine; Gomez, Müller and Podolski are replaced in the starting line up with Klose, Reus and Schürrle for the greece game today ...
wonder if this is true ... after winning all games so far would be quite an upset in strategy: from the strength & power options to the fast acceleration, 1 on 1 players

Hmm, are they thinking Greece are a walkover and saving their strikers for the Semis?

And in preparation for England's game with Italy...

Heard the rumour. I'm trying to decide between Reus and Schürrle - haven't seen them, any hints ;) :).

Fizzoid :)

both are fast strikers/wingers who like to move into channels and like through passes
Schürrle likes to cut inside from the left and strike with his better right foot, and also tries long distance shots, fast on the counter... normally a fantastic super-sub against a tired defensive because of his acceleration,

Reus is less of a striker but more of a ball-to-the-ground midfield dribbler, great in 1on1s, 1-2 passes, goes straight through the middle when there is little space

i suspect there are plenty of videos on youtube from either player ...

edit: Schürrle is also very strong stamina wise and works an awful lot, which will be needed with Müller off the field, and for Reus: he scored 18 goals and 7 assists which made him 4th in the Bundesliga behind Huntelaar, Gomez & Lewandowski in the scoring list

Thank you takao, I'll gamble on Reus - the 3 are confirmed.

Which takes me to Shinji Kagawa - welcome to Manchester United and Neutron Heath :).

Cheers,

you're not the only one going for Reus ... but don't forget that Klose is also back in the game .... i feel only bad for those 40% who went with Gomez ;)

edit: 3 minutes in and germany already created 2 dangerous scenes in the penalty box and scored a close offside goal

During the anthems, my young daughter suddenly got rather excited. 'It's uncle Cheese Cake!' she shouted.

I hadn't noticed this before but sure enough one of the Greeks bears a striking resemblance to my brother Cheese Cake. As such, I'll be cheering them on tonight. Sorry takao, but blood and water and all that.

and how is the happiness regarding uncle cheese cake's performance so far ?

.. argh ... checking macrumors and nearly miss a goal there ... 4-1

So much quality and depth in the German squad. Gotze and Gomez on. I don't see how England can overcome them...that is if we managed to somehow do the Italian job.

^
They look set to dominate International Football for a while.

EDIT: ...and Germany are through to the Semis after winning their 15th consecutive game.

And do you know the really scary thing? 14 of their 23 man squad are still 24 or younger. Frightening.

Germany needs to keep their focus up for the entire game and they really are a force to reckoned with. I don't expect them to play the same way against England, if they beat Italy they played two years ago. Tonight was an exception. Now what reallyscares me is the fact we don't have any strikers that can compete with Gomez' efficiency when Klose quits the squad or gets the boot after the tournament. Kießling, Helmes are decent strikers, but they're not effecient enough.
