Bendtner has had a good tournament. It's astonishing how poorly the Dutch have played given the amount of talent in their squad.

EDIT: Both games have become rather boring. RVP was just given a yellow for clocking Pepe in the head. I would have given him an award for that.

EDIT2: Ronnie scores again and that is surely that.

Well...i guess thats curtains for the Dutch. They can have zero complaints. Just never got started.

van der Vaart, the only Dutch player who has looked really dangerous today, has just hit the post. That would have been a lovely goal.

The Dutch have worked hard, but they are disorganized and wasteful in front of goal, and their defending has been nonexistent. They look like they've given up now.

Portugal have had several golden chances to run up the score...

Indeed. But where will the blame fall? Bert van Marwijk put out what is a world class side on paper...but they did not perform. What do you think Dutch fans will make of it, Happybunny?

I suppose we might as well mention that Germany beat the Danes 2-1, with the hilariously named Lars Bender scoring the winner. A solid if unspectacular performance by the Germans.

4 Arsenal players have now exit the competition.

Agger is now out with the Danes getting knocked out, but he looked excellent. But England depend to a significant extent on Liverpool players...Johnson has been iffy so far but Gerrard and Carroll have so far been good...I don't expect Henderson to do much.

the good news: future Arsenal player Lukas Podolski scores ;)
the favorites for the the quarter finals sure are mightily obvious:

Greece - Germany .... politic puns incoming !
Czech Republic - Portugal .... how the czechs are going to handle this will bei interesting

fun fact: amount of minutes Lars Bender played as right defender before today's game: 2 x 16

I guess he just went by name instead of teamplayers(Robben's confidence is gone ever since he missed those two penalties against Dortmund and Chelsea).
Interesting article from Der Spiegel.

The Denmark-Germany game was kind of boring. Denmark really put on a top performance though, however Germany was there, when needed. Still a looooong way to go to the final, even though everybody is talking about playing Spain on July 1st.

I fear Happybunny is going to be too busy unpainting his house to reply.

If it makes you feel any better Happybunny, USA didn't even qualify. ;)

I agree, the game was not very exciting. The Danes played well, but Germany ultimately outclassed them without doing anything marvellous.

I think simple logic suggests a Spain-Germany final. We have had two shock exits in Russia and the Netherlands though, so maybe we will see a big surprise or two in the next round.

Greece will feel like they have a chance in the next round, though a Greek victory over Germany would be a massive, massive upset.

Meanwhile, tomorrow is Fixtures Day here in Englandshire. Yay for Fixtures Day. :)

Sky don't have a clock counting down! :)

takao - even when Gomez fluffs, he assists. Your call for vdV ended in the Netherlands doubling their tally :), but he couldn't make up for those front men - how many chances missed this tournament!

And Ronaldo finds his finishing. ;)

Cheers,

neither did Austria ... thanks to the marvelous luck to draw the germans yet again for the qualifying phase ;)

to be honest ... i've seen enough of the 'parking the bus' tactics .. it worked once in a tournament but nobody wants to see it anymore ... i hope for an early german goal to finis that dreary style once and for all

ohhh another fact i just heard: germany not losing any points in the group phase at the EURO ? hard to believe but they never managed that before ... how the hell is that possible

I don't mind low-scoring games, but I remember how irritated I was when Chelsea beat Barca. It is horrible to watch one team do nothing but get in the way. And that is probably what Greece will try to do against Germany.

We lost to a far better team tonight and through out this European Championship we as a team failed. From runners up in the World Cup two years ago, to three straight loses.

I never take it that far, that I paint my own house Orange. I only put one flag over the front door. :p

So far both Germany and Spain have played the best football, either of them would be worthy winners.

Qualifying is some times harder than the Championships themselves, with so many great teams in Europe.

Back to planet reality. :D

From the largest newspaper todays headline.

The knives are already out for Bert v Marwijk.

6 of Arsenal 's first 10 games next season are away and include trips to Stoke, Liverpool, City, and United. Then there's a home game against Chelsea sandwiched in there too.

Nice!

If the Netherlands beat Portugal by more than one goal and Germany beat Denmark, the Dutch go through. All three teams save Germany will be level on points, with a win and a loss against the other two. In this situation, goal difference in the matches among the teams in question is used and that would give the Dutch the advantage.

I think.

what kind of maths do you have to take to learn how to do that? lol.

moot point now.

Meanwhile, north of the border, the SPL season kicks off for Kilmarnock with the visit of Club 12...

Yes they are a mysterious bunch, not much known about Club 12 yet or where they will play. Cathkin Park perhaps?

I haven't posted since Thursday, Rangers Football Club (1899) plc was wound up and replaced by The Rangers Football Club plc, a totally different company that doesn't owe anybody any money. In a weird move, former manager Walter Smith put in a bid for the club after the newco was set up. Strange timing as he had weeks beforehand to put in a bid so it's seen as a bit of a spoiling move to get the fans to force Greene out and it means there's no blood on Smith's hands for winding up the club.

The money behind Smith's bid is from Jim McColl. I thought he was the money behind Whyte's bid as I knew Whyte didn't have money (turned out he didn't). McColl bought over my former employers then sold them for a fortune.

The way I see it Greene doesn't have the long term interest of the club at heart, he's here to make money and here's his chance to escape with a profit and no hassle.

It looks pretty shady. I had a look at this article quoting all the other SPL chairmen on the upcoming vote to keep Rangers in the SPL...from the all the mealymouthed doublespeak they are spouting, it looks likely that they are willing to look the other way at the entire episode in order to protect their own financial interests. This begs the question: If, say, Inverness went through the same type of mismanagement and winding up, would they be allowed back in the SPL under a newco?

It's also ridiculous that Rangers are permitted to participate in the vote.

EDIT: Spain bored us to death for 88 minutes and then decided to put the ball in the back of the net - though not from a shot. The final ball was, of course, a pass. ;)

Valiant effort from the Croatians but it just wouldn't fall kindly for them.

ROI just didn't belong in the tournament this time round.
