Fans have been divided on him lately. I watched in play during our title-winning season in '08 and he was excellent - pacy, willing to take defenders on and using his powerful left foot to advantage. Since 2008 his form has dipped somewhat, and he has danced around the fringes of the USA squad without ever really impressing. His deadball delivery on corners remains good and he's still fast, but his decision-making has been called into question on numerous occasions. He's also picked up a couple injuries in the last two seasons that have hampered him.

So far Columbus have been solidly behind him, and while there has been talk of a move to Europe nothing has materialized. In the short term he remains a Crew player. The reshuffling in the national team could be big for Robbie. He once actually played with Klinsmann, and at 24 he's still young enough to develop further and perhaps break into the national squad. Of course, if that happens a move to Europe is much more likely.

We have another couple well-kept secrets in Columbus - Chad Marshall is one of the top central defenders in the league, and Eddie Gaven is a talented, composed and consistent central midfielder. The two have been metronomic over the last few seasons, and both have, like Rogers, sniffed around the national team at times (Gaven has 8 caps, Marshall 11).

WHat do you think of Renteria? I got to see a preseason friendly vs New England in Chattanooga. He was a beast until he got hurt.

Yes, I bet he did ;)

Naughty. But speaking of the French, surely you've all seen the French away kit?

Could it possibly be more stereotypically French? Maybe it comes with a loaf of bread and a beret?

Renteria is our most consistent attacker and a fan favorite. He's not blisteringly fast, but he has a decent turn of speed and great strength on the ball. He is willing to play the ball on the ground and challenge defenders. He also has a powerful shot and is generally a good finisher.

He's had some injury problems but when healthy he is very effective. Columbus had hoped to pair him and Andres Mendoza up front, but that has almost never happened due to injuries. It's a huge shame because those two, working together, would probably finally give the Crew the dangerous attack we so desperately need.

It's absolutely brilliant (and very generous) of the French to lampoon themselves like this. I can't wait to see a picture of Frank Ribery shrugging his shoulders in front of a ref while wearing this shirt. ;)

Stereotypically Breton rather than French methinks.

True, but the most hilarious regional stereotypes always end up becoming national stereotypes. How many people in, say, Boston do you think drive a big pickup truck and wear ten-gallon hats? And yet the enduring foreign image of Americans seems to be that of the cowboy/redneck.

The American equivalent of this French shirt would be a jersey slathered in stars and stripes. And we just have better taste than that.

Oh.

Coincidentally, French nautical stripes are really fashionable this year. Still, I like the new French kits - very traditional in a nice way, somewhat like England's post-World Cup kits have been.

Now here's the stereotypical American football shirt:

This is true, although I think the most common American stereotype is the loud ignorant tourist in plaid trousers (sic) :) . The reason I mentioned the shirt was I was wearing that exact design shirt and as far as I know it's a registered design of Armor Lux the Breton shirt maker(although everybody and their dog pushes out copies) so presumably money changed hands.
(actual on closer inspection it looks like Nike are engaging in a little IP theft )

I see those in the USA as - perfect for your trips to Alaska:):

Back home from some travelling to a predictably low key transfer window so far from an Arsenal perspective... come on Wenger, we seriously need some players!

Saw Klinsmann is the new USA coach, good appointment...

Perhaps it would look something like this

^ Except much uglier. ;)

On the plus side, when it's time for me to put together the shirt graphics for Silencio and Lord Blackadder's fantasy football teams I now have some great inspiration to work from.

Thanks guys! :)

Oh, bloody hell.

That Colorado Caribous shirt looks like something you'd see on an NFL cheerleader or a stripper. It is truly foul.

I didn't realize that the Breton shirt design is actually protected intellectual property...it's almost like Harley Davidson trying to trademark the ghasty noise that comes out of their motorcycles (they tried and, mercifully, failed). I wonder if Nike or the FFF greased some palms in order to use the design.

In any case, it is THE most brilliant France shirt EVER. It should be their first kit from now on.

I hope to go back east when I return to grad school, so I'll be exchanging my XtraTuffs for something with a more Ivy League look.

Excitement is reaching a fever pitch...Klinsmann was supposed to announce his first squad today for next Wednesday against Mexico, but the announcement has been postponed 'till tomorrow as Klinsmann is still personally contacting players. The Mexico match is badly timed, the upcoming friendlies against Costa Rica, Ecuador (rumored) and Belgium will be more informative since they will probably feature experimental sides.

Lego have already brought out a figurine. The decapitated heads on a string concerned me.

Anyway, cheered me up a little after Rangers were dumped out of the Champions League.

XtraTuffs, blimey everything's rugged in Alaska! We've only got wellies. A male wearing the Caribou shirt in an Alaskan bar:eek:

Jaffa - the BBC played out with 'Happy Hour' after Hull FC lost to Leeds Rhinos in the recent Challenge Cup clash.

Fuzzy14 - :) re the Lego. Sounds like the players went a bit mad in the Rangers' game.

Alaskans have such a strong image of themselves, and it's almost a self-caricature. XtraTufs are standard footwear for any setting - home, work, a night on the town...though a recent announcement that production is moving to China has caused "true" Alaskans to question their footwear choice.

At least the rec leagues here use proper football boots, not XtraTufs. :D

I see Maurice Edu had a hand in the goal. Well done my boy, my condolences to Gers fans on the result though.

I didn't see the game as it was on an obscure PPV channel, but from what I hear it was the players who got a little carried away, nobody seems to be blaming McCoist or calling for him to be sacked. Yet.

The SPL now takes a break until 13 August so that our big teams can play English teams in friendlies.

So, finally got around to watching "The Damned United". Not a bad film, except oh my word, it's practically fiction.

^ I need to get around to watching that.

Jurgen Klinsmann (He's just going to have to get used to his name losing the umlaut here in the States ;)) has released his 22-man squad for next Wendesday's "friendly" against Mexico.

The excitement for many US fans reached fever pitch as they waited for Kilnsmann's first squad, but the list is uncontroversial for the most part. It's a good mix of players from MLS, Europe, and the Mexican league. The only truly notable absence is Clint Dempsey, but he was presumably let off the hook as a favor to Fulham so he can prepare for the Premeir league campaign.

Young FC Nürnberg defender Timmy Chandler is probably the most anticipated addition to the list. He'll have his work cut out for him against El Tri, even though Chicharito will remain in England.

So, finally got around to watching "The Damned United". Not a bad film, except oh my word, it's practically fiction.

It's what they should classify as a historical bromance: Brian Clough's (mostly) requited love for Peter Taylor, and Clough's longing for, spurning by, and Fatal Attraction-like stalking of Ron Revie.

Still, a fairly entertaining film IMO. But I preferred Looking For Eric.

Hmm. Our squad numbers were released earlier in the week, and absent from the list of players was a certain James Richard Bullard. However, I note that he was quietly added to the list of numbered players yesterday.

So, have club and player patched up their differences? Is he now available for selection? And how long before he lets us down again?

Anyway, Jimmy will be pleased he's officially part of the squad because all he wants to do is play football. For Jimmy, it's all about the football.
