And Arsenal would have a hard time replacing him, no matter how much their fans wring their hands about him now.

I think clubs are stupid to hire and fire managers as quickly as they do. I will almost never vote to see a manager fired...I was even against getting rid of Hodgson!!

Arsenal should keep Wenger as long as Wenger wants to stay.

I remember when people where calling for SAF's head whilst Mourinho was dominating the EPL, saying he had lost the plot and had become old and senile. Then they chastised him for not spending the CR7 money on an immediate replacement instead of relying on Nani/Rooney.

Same story when United had a bumpy start one or two seasons ago.

...yet who is having the last laugh now?

Barcelona ;)

I think many Arsenal fans' frustration comes from the fact they spend very little and get so close, but always seem to come away empty handed. So if Arsenal did actually splash a little more cash on known quality players rather than just hopefuls, they might actually win something.

But let's hope they never, ever, do that!

Good to hear from you MacBoobsPro.:) Anyway, that's the past.:D:eek:

Until you cross paths in Europe again, and Pep (or Mou) has his way with you. ;)

Perhaps it's so obvious it needs no mention, but I think it's worth pointing out that Barcelona look even better this season. The Juggernaut continues to roll. It should be an all-Spanish final this year in the Champions League.

EDIT: Looks like Celtic will be achieving the unusual feat of crashing out of the Europa League twice this season. ;)

Michel Platini said:
I am very disappointed with Scottish football which has such a great history in European football. They have such great clubs and it is a shame none of them have qualified but these things are decided on the pitch. The Scottish league have to look at this situation very seriously now.

Platini actually sounds disappointed that something has to be decided on the pitch for once, without any paper bags of cash being exchanged.

It's also a particulalrly ironic statement considering that Celtic's future in Europe is currently being decided in the courtroom rather than on the pitch....

Btw, to clarify. I'm nor suggesting Wenger should be sacked, I'm suggesting he will moat likely be sacked.

He may have just pushed his length of stay. If the next few games go like the pounding from Man U, some new life will need to be instilled and the manager is usually the first head to roll.

...it's coming up, it's coming up, it's coming up, it's hair.

Two for Rooney, England have won the game, but Capello keeps him on for the 90 minutes. Parker has a yellow, Barry comes off. Wait how long before using Adam Johnson? Using Milner and Lampard.

Hope Smalling was first game jitters, plus he and his midfielder didn't work together well.

Elsewhere, Germany continue to struggle, a good win for Wales, and San Marino.

Lord Blackadder; if Manchester United face Real Madrid, health and safety will insist on protective goggles.

Cheers,

That Rob Scott is a pottymouth.

Scotland game; Naismith and the referee competing for worst performance...and the referee wins.:( Decent return for Fletcher, though he should have cleared before the...erm...guess we have to call it a penalty.

Rant 1: Shoddy BBC journalism.
Fan cleared of assaulting Lennon screams the headline. We all saw it. How could he possibly be cleared of that? Because he wasn't. If you read it (or click on it), he was found guilty of a breech of the peace and served several months in jail for it. He was found not proven (which is different from being cleared) of a sectarian attack. That was the fault of the prosecution, they should have dropped the sectarian part because only one person heard the alleged chant, one against one in a court isn't beyond reasonable doubt. But thanks to shoddy journalism that detail seems to have been lost and so the green half of Glasgow are now up in arms thinking the guy got off Scott free.

Rant 2: Diving Cheating Czechs
Thankfully I passed up on the offer of hospitality tickets for Hampden today as I would of ran on the pitch and lamped the referee. I'm trying my hardest to teach my six year old right from wrong, even he could tell it wasn't a penalty. Lesson learned, so now to get ahead with life you have to cheat, thanks UEFA. One dive, 2 minutes from time has probably cost Scotland their place at Euro 2012. The SFA should sue, as FIFA/UEFA will only bring in video evidence or allow match results to be overturned if it starts to hurt them in the pocket. Any why should I pay any money to see a match where the performance is secondary to the ability to cheat the ref and the fans.

Where's Christian Daily when you need him?

Anyway, Celtic reinstated back into Europe! That's good!:)

if by "Germany continue to struggle" you mean them hammering of my boys 6:2 ... while playing with the handbrake on after 30 minutes because they were already 3:0 in the lead

and Austria had 7 Bundesliga players in their starting lineup

the good news is that the two games against germany are over and no more disaster possible in this EURO qualification... the bad news ? Austria did draw Germany again for the next world cup qualification

in the end they were playing with Klose,Müller,Özil,Schürrle,Götze as attacking formation which was nothing short of mind boggling hollywood-football

go ahead and shout me down but... i think club teams should still play their regular season matches during the international break. mainly cos i don't care for national footy that much. but another good reason would be to let some chaps who don't get much playing time get some minutes in.

I did see that headline and thought it was confusing. The fan went to jail! Obviously the headline writer was in an especially sanguine mood when he wrote that.

As for the Czechs, like Wenger I didn't see the incident but if the diver wasn't punished by the ref surely it can be retrospectively punished, if nothing else?

Well, I have just the league for you, since MLS has been playing through international breaks for years. ;)

USA 0-1 Costa Rica. Klinsmann earns his first loss as USA manager. We are now winless after two matches under the German. It was a game dominated by the USA but we failed to finish our chances and a goal against the run of play settled things in favor of the Costa Ricans. We play away to Belgium on Tuesday, still looking for our first win in the Klinsmann era. Costa Rica are no chumps, but I expected a win. Still, these are meaningless friendlies from a competitive standpoint, so now is the time to experiment I suppose.

My main issue with this is traditionally the Scotland squad was made up of 50% Old Firm players yet >70% of the Tartan Army are non-Old Firm supporters, so it would have a profound impact on teams like St Johnstone (Perth) where 5,000 will travel to Hampden (1/4 to 1/2 of St Johnstone's home support) if the matches clashed.

But on the other hand, it could actually work quite well as a handicaping system to let the smaller teams (without international players) have a crack at the big ones. Remember of course that when the African Nationas Cup is held there is no such international break but the teams cope.

Lots of Euro qualifiers on tap, most not very interesting though the Irish drawing in Russia is a pretty impressive result. Instead, I watched a friendly... ;)

Belgium 1-0 USA

Another loss for Jurgen Klinsmann's USA. We started a 4-3-3 but failed to get enough performance out of our wingers to make it work. We were outplayed but not dominated by the Belgians; the most vexing thing about the match was that we were completely toothless, offering almost nothing going forward. We possessed the ball well but made too many lateral passes and never really sliced open the Belgian defense. I attribute this to the fact that the team is not used to the system being employed and some of the players are relative newcomers. Defensively we played well and Howard made a couple excellent saves.

We played better in the second half, but never really looked like scoring. We did get an equalizer that was unfairly ruled out for a dodgy offside call, but the end result was probably fair, the Belgians created far more chances. Belgium looked pretty solid. Despite USA's higher FIFA ranking, Belgium regularly face tougher European opposition.

Some knees are already jerking in the direction of Klinsmann but I'm not going to begin to judge him till we start World Cup qualification.

u know i love the crew! =)

imho, klinsmann doesn't have to win until it counts.. tinker while you can sir...

If it makes you feel any better, Wednesday play during international breaks these days. ;)

:D:D

u all got plus 1 from me. =)

Well last night, despite the win, I reached an epiphany. Craig Levein should go when we fail to qualify for the European Championships. I used to be a fan, thought he was a great tactician but last night was enough. At home, against Lithuania and we go for a 4-5-1 formation. Now as Levein pointed out, very few countries run with 2 up front, but at least they play more positive football. We are sitting too far back, the result is when midfield get the ball to the lone striker he’s still 30 yards from goal. First half was chance after chance missed. We need a killer striker, one who just pounces on a loose ball in the box and buries it. Naismith missed a few last night, but that’s because he was running about so much his sharpness was gone. Levein has refused to pick players like ex-Hibee Derek Riordan because he is perceived to be lazy, he doesn’t go back to midfield to win the ball. Well I don’t really mind, as long as he pounces on the ball in the box. Ally McCoist made a career doing just that.

And the last 10 minutes were horrendous. Why can’t we defend inside the opponents half?

But the main thing that got me was Levein was happy with the performance, thought we played a good passing game. I don’t really care for passing the football about in my own half of the pitch.

So we’ve got 2 games to go and we are 2 points behind the Czecks. Both of us still to play Spain. So we need Spain to give them a hiding then roll over for us, not going to happen.

And that’s assuming we can beat Lichtenstein….
