That is either the best or the worst shirt design of all time, and I'm not sure it's humanly possible to prove it either way. ;)
On the contrary, it's ace – as this archive footage proves. I think you'll find that it's long shorts that make players look ridiculous, not this fine shirt. ;)

I think I've mentioned before, but folk who vote for this shirt in those 'worst kits of all time' polls ignore the fact that the shirt that followed it was even worse. We fell out with the kit manufacturer mid-season, and so had to find a new polyester rag purveyor sharpish. The problem was that the design had to be as close as possible to the previous (in order to satisfy the Football League, with whom the design was registered), but different enough so as not to infringe on the old manufacturer's copyright.

The end result was a messy swirl of rusty brown, stripes and leopard spots (leopard spots?!).

Gah – 'tis horrid.

I think the bagginess is what gets me the most. I hate overly baggy shirts and shorts. Though, back in the 90s I was going baggy myself. Hindsight being 20/20 and all that.

Oh my word! That would just go with the leisure suit I wore for Halloween! :D

While i'm not a huge football fan, i do watch the giants and jets fairly often. Do you think Drew Brees is underrated? You always hear about the Mannings and Brady but not too much on Brees. Thoughts?

The nice young lady distracts one from a cold analysis of the shirt, but see how bemused all-star center back Chad Marshall is over the new kit:

I can't see any shirt it's that well camouflaged into the background  just a floating head.

Game on in the SPL! Despite calls (by some) that the league was won before Halloween, Rangers have squandered a 12 point lead and it's down to 4 points with an Old Firm fast approaching….

I'm going to start a 'Posh Spice house hunting in Glasgow' rumour.

Nike have unveiled a wardrobe's worth of new kits, and amongst them is the new USA home shirt...

There looks to be a watermarked sash on there, but sorry guys – you're channelling Doncaster Rovers with that shirt.

Including the watermark in the design might be an improvement.

That is amazing. It's like a design you'd see on a tattooed man at a circus.

These are hilarious. It can only happen when someone posts to a thread without reading a single one of the posts that came before it. Why would you do that?

I like how the yellow background helps distract from how blindingly bright that yellow shirt is. On any other background, someone might think it was harsh, but not this one!

****

Separate matter: I'm pleased with how Spurs are playing these days, and I really like being in third place with a game in hand. But they also have a fairly easy schedule through the end of December, and I expect a mid-season slump because it happens every year.

I'm also pleased that my LA Galaxy finally wrapped up the title on Sunday, although it was a pretty dull game. They had so many opportunities to blow it over the last few weeks and somehow they didn't, unlike in some other seasons.

I'm used to the yellow-ness of our home kit. I also prefer when we play in yellow shorts and yellow socks. :D

Maybe I've become jaded, but somehow I don't see Spurs hanging on to third come the end of the season. It's so predictable I hate to bring it up, but I have to think Chelsea and Arsenal, and possibly Liverpool, will knock Spurs and Newcastle out of their perches and restore the old order. Man City have broken through on sheer financial muscle, and are still not quite there yet. Still, Spurs have a good team, one that very well might finish fourth this season. At least there will be stiff competition near the top.

I am not a a Galaxy cheerleader by any stretch, but they were the best team this season and deserved the title. I always prefer the Supporter's Shield winner to take the MLS Cup as well. I would have been pretty annoyed if Salt Lake had gotten through.

MLS news: With Montreal's entry to the league, MLS now consists of 19 teams (9 in the Western Conference, 10 in the Eastern Conference). For the last two seasons, the league adopted the simple and logical solution of having every team play every other team twice (home and away). For 2012 a different strategy has been resorted to. From Wikipedia:

Each of the 19 teams will play a 34-game regular season schedule, one that will employ a new imbalanced format. Western Conference clubs will play each conference rival three times, and play one game against each Eastern Conference club. Eastern Conference clubs will play seven of their conference rivals three times, the remaining two conference rivals two times, and each Western Conference club once.

It's a bit weird.

Oh, I'm under no illusions about their chances. I'm encouraged by the fact that they are beating up on some lesser teams, since that's what good teams do and Spurs haven't done much of that in recent years. But on paper at least, it'd difficult to see how Spurs finish ahead of Arsenal or Chelsea. I would be pleased to finish fifth again and ecstatic with fourth.

Chelsea 0-2 Liverpool Well then, Liverpool has finished off Chelsea for a second time this season. A Carling Cup would be nice, but more than anything I'm concerned for the condition of Lucas - if it's a long-term injury it will cost us in the league. The missed penalty from Carroll also helped sour things for fans of the 'Pool. Still, a win is a win and it came against a nominally top side. This is good.

EDIT: And Man City have just stolen it at the death from Arsenal! That was a lethal counterattack. Hargreaves played pretty much a full match as well.

The Europa League will prove a pretty big distraction from that goal. I must say I'm glad Liverpool is out of that competition. I'd much rather win the FA Cup than the Europa League.

This is bad news for United; they haven't played Blackburn yet and Steve Bruce is always very obliging to his old master. Bruce's successor might refuse to follow the script. :D

Wow, looks like Crystal Palace are through in the Carling Cup after beating United (reserves) at Old Trafford. They'll face Cardiff in the semis.

And that means Liverpool are set to face Man City. City have a lot of committments, but also a very deep squad - Liverpool will definitely have their work cut out for them to get through the tie.

I suspect Kenny will want to go for it, but league position is still more important, so it will be interesting to see where we are in the league by then and how many changes he makes to the squad for the match.

EDIT: The initial analysis of the injury to Lucas could not be more grim - an ACL rutpure is feared, and that is nothing short of disaster for Liverpool.

I'm going to stick my neck out and say that Lucas is worth one league postion for us in his current form. If we lose him for the season the results will reflect it. We currently don;t have the squad depth to deal with a long-term injury. A scan is scheduled for tomorrow, hopefully it's not knee ligament damage.

The news offers little surprise – the bookies have Martin O'Neill down as their early favourite, with Mark Hughes just behind.
The only surprise is that Steve Kean wasn't first. Could we see Bruce at Blackburn? :)

I think my favourite for the Sunderland job is Hughes

Liverpool's worst fears are a reality: Lucas is out for the season. Charlie Adam is going to have to shoulder a heavier responsibility in the middle, and we are now going to have to rely on Gerrard to make an impact when he returns.

I don't think we need to buy in January, but this injury highlights the shallowness of Liverpool's current squad. We will need to strengthen the midfield roster in the summer, along with our continuing need for a third striker.

EDIT: Looks like Martin O'Neill is indeed the preferred candidate for the Sunderland managerial position. I'd have to say he's an improvement on Steve Bruce.
