Chiming in late again.....

Torres should have taken the penalty.
Mata has said that Torres didn't want to take it. How's that for lack of confidence?

In other news, it seems the Podolski signing is a done deal, worth £10.9m. He just needs to pass a medical and agree personal terms

Talking of shorts and world class players. Here's a picture of some bloke wearing the famous 70's short shorts, clearly to the admiration of 3 Wednesday defenders ;)

Apparently the keeper as well, as it looks like he's the one taking the pic.

Yep, it's the Spion Kop at Hillsborough, presumably at capacity (but you might have squeezed a few more in, hard to tell :) )

Probably one for his scrapbook, as seemingly the bloke in white was quite famous. Pele I think his name was :)

Yah. That's bad. Especially when on a whole tue team is blowing penalties.

Here's hoping the Mancunian teams get upended by the Iberians today. :D Bilbao is a decent team with a mad genius for a coach. Maybe they'll spring a surprise on Ol' Ferg.

I'm not sure I've seen any team play that fearlessly at Old Trafford. An intense match. There's something about Bielsa teams that simply embodies confidence and dynamism. He may not have Mourinho (or Fergie's) record of silverware but he knows his football. Just a one goal difference on aggregate. Still, Bilbao got three away goals, so the tie is finely balanced in their favor. United need to win the second leg pretty convincingly to go through.

Meanwhile, Man City go down with a whimper, though a 0-1 deficit going into a home leg is not insurmountable.

Yup. That was the icing. I'm glad they scored from that corner.

Beckham is superstitious and will probably want cans thrown at him every corner.

Manchester United:

Poor work rate, midfield outnumbered, sleepy defence, the solar flares disrupted Jones' GPS, Hernandez continues to show he's not the man to keep the ball and relieve pressure, and the third goal; 1 - never trust the opposition, and 2 - defend the ball even when it appears safe. Good show by De Gea and Evans. Looking forward to the second leg - interested to see how they line up and deal with the movement.

Cheers,
OW

Who aired the united match in the USA?

On my cable system, it was on GolTV, shown on a two hour delay. Given United's poor performance, I didn't bother watching in the end... a midfield of Giggs and Jones is just not going to work against even an average Spanish squad, and Atletico Bilbao is pretty darned good. DeGea's excellent saves prevented a blowout TBH.

Pretty depressing how far United have slipped in European play, but the rest of the big English clubs are in similar dire straits. Feels like the mid-2000s again with the youth having to learn some painful lessons against European competition; just hope there's a 2008-like pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

It's a trite expression, but it seems apt here: De Gea is an a great shot stopper, but his command of the box seems lacking. This could be because he works behind a constantly rotating defense, some of whom are inexperienced. Maybe if he played behind the same back four more often he would make less mistakes and be more commanding of his space.
